The premise of a lot of superhero movies has the ability to leave the layman scratching his head and going huh? He did what? With what? That’s not even possible! Well yeah, its not. But that’s the whole point of Comic Book Characters isn't it? The ability to create something or someone phenomenal with your imagination. The idea of Super Heroes and powerful rings that can construct anything are not ridiculous nor are they silly. It’s the translation and execution of these concepts onto the big screen that becomes tricky. That is where Green Lantern failed (IMO). Not because its "lame", but because they failed to do it justice. I will admit I was skeptical about seeing Captain America especially because of the embargo placed on it. Does the movie completely blow? And after reading the reviews, it appeared to be split 2 ways. The people who knew the story of Steve Rogers and those who didn't. Being of sound mind, i decided to see it anyways because it’s Captain America.
It seems the recipe for Super Heroes these days is for them to be flawed in some way with some deep dark secret. You will not get that in this movie. Captain America was specifically written and has always been written as the guy who always strives to do good. Anybody expecting a "dark and mysterious" Captain America will have to wait a while for a reboot. Besides the cinematography, which was completely amazing and beautiful, the characters in the movie are likable. Yes, even Red Skull. Chris Evans managed to capture the essence of Steve Rogers both pre and after serum. All he wanted to do was serve his country. This part of his character wasn't over-sensationalized which made it possible for the audience to identify with him. This character trait was also retained post-serum as we see him go on a cross country trip as a "chorus boy" before he got the chance to be a real soldier. At the end of the day, he really thought he was doing his part to serve his country. Red Skull was a villain everybody could hate, a Nazi Scientist with delusions of grandeur. Once you get past the skin issues, you see him for what he really is, a man with a God complex. I feared they would make Peggy Carter into the typical woman who gets googly-eyed at the sight of a few muscles but her character turned out to be my favorite. With the exception of Stanley Tucci’s Dr, Erkskine and Steve’s inherent goodness, she was the only other motivating factor in the movie. She wasn’t overly emotional (except that one time with the gun and that intense scene where he was plunging to his lengthy deep sleep) and the budding romance between them was treated with respect. Of course this also meant Steve never got laid. Yes, he was a Virgin and there is nothing wrong with that. Tommy Lee Jones was exceptionally funny as the no nonsense taking Colonel Chester Phillips. And he had the best one-liners in the movie. With the exception of dodgy CGI and some editing flaws in the action sequences, the movie was simply just good. It was fun. It was enjoyable, and it didn’t take itself too seriously. Which, in my honest opinion was its saving grace. Yes, there is a man called Red Skull running around terrorizing people but you know what, it works. But, lets get to the heart of the matter
