CAPTAIN MARVEL Concept Art Reveals A Ronan The Accuser Heavily Inspired By Jack Kirby

Ronan the Accuser returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain Marvel, and concept artist Aleksi Briclot has now shared a take on the villain which is much closer to Jack Kirby's original design...

Captain Marvel took us into the Marvel Cinematic Universe's past and re-introduced us to Ronan the Accuser in the process. We first met the villain in Guardians of the Galaxy, and Marvel Studios concept artist Aleksi Briclot has now shared an early, comic accurate design for Lee Pace's character.

As he explains, "I've stayed quite close to his original look and also how he appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy. Trying to find a good balance. Also working on some commander vibe. The pattern in the background is inspired by his hammer. I found more interesting to have it as a logo than carrying a real hammer when you’re commanding a whole float of spaceships."

Looking at the comparison below, it's clear that this take on Ronan was meant to remind fans of the one legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby helped create back in 1967. However, in order to have the villain line up with what we saw in James Gunn's 2014 movie, the colour scheme is quite a bit different. It's a nice balance, though, and a shame we didn't see this on screen.

Ultimately, Ronan's role in Captain Marvel ended up being somewhat disappointing, with the only memorable moment coming when he stared down Carol Danvers during that final battle.

Check out the concept art below:

Another problem with that movie, all these cool characters that showed up, were wasted. Ronan, Coulson, Fury. Should have just used Ronan as the big bad, even with how they completely over powered captain marvel (pretty sure she is not that powerful in the comics), he probably could have given her a good fight or at least better than the “fight” we got

They did set up Ronan returning but the sequel is supposedly set in the present so I guess that's not happening?

Kinda feel bad for Lee Pace if that's the case. He and Mads Mikkelsen were criminally wasted in this franchise.

I truly hoped they'd not waste him but alas...

Matter of fact, eventhough i'm still pissed af about what happened in IM3 i still hope they'll give us a dope ass Mandarin in Shang-Chi.

AND a proper BARON Zemo in the tv series.

Never too late to course correct.

@Doomsday8888 - Zemo was awesome in Civil War imo. Very layered and quite deep. Loved everything about him.

@SnideCut

He was a good antagonist.
Time for him to wear the mask and become the villain he is in the comics.

Too bad he wont face Steve Rogers.
Too bad the REAL Mandarin never fought with Tony Stark.

It is what it is, i guess...

@Doomsday8888 -

I mean, I don't know if Zemo has ever been exclusively a Cap villain but atleast, he faced him for a short while in Civil War. I just thought his interpretation in that movie was done incredibly well.

As for the Mandarin, I would've liked to see the Tech vs Magic aspect of Tony going against Mandarin but I also think, given how things are irl, that a lot of criticism would've been levied for having a white guy go against an asian who performs magic. As it stands, I think having him be an antagonist for Shang-Chi kind of makes sense.

Well that's absolutely better than both versions of Ronan we got. Even though he's serviceable as the villain in Guardians, they essentially managed to waste him not once but twice.
