Tickets are now on sale for Captain Marvel and last night saw the release of a series of posters alongside a brand new sneak peek

That's been followed by an interview with directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck in which they were asked about what sort of tone fans should expect from the Marvel Studios movie. Quizzed on where it lands between the darker nature of Avengers: Infinity War and the goofy Ant-Man and The Wasp, the filmmakers explained that it's very much its own thing.

"We approached this movie as being, at the heart of it, this mystery of self-identity for Captain Marvel," Anna explained. "It has a lot of playfulness in it, and that kind of buddy-cop vibe that Captain Marvel has with the Nick Fury character was really an important touchstone for us."

"Yeah," Ryan agreed. "Like the '80s and '90s buddy-cop movies, like 48 Hrs. or Lethal Weapon. We have some of that. Those movies, even the serious ones, they have a really terrific sense of humor, and we wanted to maintain that as well."

Here's where things get a tad
spoilery, though. When pushed for details on how Captain Marvel fits into the wider MCU, the following exchange took place between the two directors:

Boden: All we can say is this is a '90s film, a '90s period film. Where Sam Jackson is a younger version of Nick Fury.

Fleck: And Tony Stark hasn't figured out how to become Iron Man yet, so ...

Boden: That's all we can say.

Many fans believe that they may have spoiled a young Tony Stark cameo here and while it's impossible to say whether or not that's the case (it could just be that Fleck was referring to the 90s setting), it would certainly make sense. After all, Tony would be in mid-teens at this point in time and could easily factor into the story somehow, even if it's just for a few seconds of screentime.

Thoughts?

I think they actually said that it WON'T be Stark. He could be someone else, maybe Thor. He wouldn't have to be younger and we never knew if he has been on Earth in the decades before his first movie. He would fit in the space setting and also putting some background for Captain Marvel's integration into the team.

@FrankieDedo - Right. Seems like it would be Howard Stark. Not that exciting but makes sense.

@jmorin - Unless it's a flashback before 1995, Howard is dead as he and Maria were assassinated in 1991
