According to Entertainment Weekly, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of Carol Danvers is a part-Kree, part-human warrior with "the powers of a God." That's a fairly big change to her comic book counterpart's origin story which saw her DNA fused with Captain Mar-Vell's during an explosion, giving her superhuman powers in the process. Based on comments from Brie Larson, it sounds like Carol is struggling to come to terms with her Kree side, possibly because it's actually always been within her.
"You have this Kree part of her that’s unemotional, that is an amazing fighter and competitive," Larson told the site in a recent interview. "Then there’s this human part of her that is flawed but is also the thing that she ends up leading by. It’s the thing that gets her in trouble, but it’s also the thing that makes her great. And those two sides warring against each other is what makes her her."
I find it hard to believe that a change to her DNA would essentially change her personality so it definitely seems possible that one of her parents might have been a Kree or there's something more to her origin story than meets the eye. That's hinted at by the site when they note that after joining the Kree military team Starforce, she returns to Earth "with new questions about her past and identity."
