CAPTAIN MARVEL May Have Set The Stage For SECRET INVASION In A Surprising Way - SPOILERS

Captain Marvel handles the Skrulls in a very unexpected manner; while we all expected the shapeshifting aliens to be set up as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new big bad after Thanos, they're instead portrayed in a sympathetic light. However, while the movie may end with Carol Danvers heading into outer space with them, there's one crucial scene that could set the stage for Secret Invasion.

When Talos and the Skrulls are escaping from Mar-Vell's ship, his daughter watches her father slaughter the Kree (despite him telling the girl's mother to cover her eyes) and it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to assume that she will grow up to be Veranke.

While the actress who plays the youngster is credited simply as "Talos' Daughter," this would make sense as the time frames work (she'll be an adult in the present day MCU) and it wouldn't be remotely difficult for something to happen in the Captain Marvel sequel to turn her against humans and her father's hopes for peace.

This would definitely be a slow burn approach to setting up the Skrull invasion of Earth, but then it did take Earth's Mightiest Heroes six years to finally comes face to face with Thanos after The Avengers!

This is obviously just a theory for now, but the inclusion of Talos' daughter doesn't seem like a  coincidence and the movie makes a point of showing her watching her father kill the Kree.

Captain Marvel sets the stage for the MCU's future!

Captain Marvel Vs. The Kree

Captain Marvel ends on something of a cliffhanger as Carol Danvers blasts into space shortly after sending Yon-Rogg back to the Supreme Intelligence with a warning that she's coming to put an end to it once and for all.

There are a lot of open plot threads here, including what happens when Carol finally comes face to face with the being that spent years controlling her and robbing the hero of her past (we also never get to see its true form, and that feels like something which now needs to be addressed sooner rather than later).

Plus, it definitely feels like there's more story to tell between Carol and Yon-Rogg, so we're guessing a sequel will take place shortly after the events of this movie to fill in those gaps.

No Secret Invasion?

I think it's fair to say that we went into Captain Marvel expecting the stage to be set for a big screen adaptation of Secret Invasion. However, Talos and the rest of the Skrulls are portrayed in a sympathetic light and the movie does not wrap up with them infiltrating our planet. Does this mean Marvel Studios plans to portray them as the good guys moving forward?

Not necessarily.

Talos makes it clear that there are a lot of Skrulls scattered throughout the universe, and it's entirely feasible that at least one of them would like to make our planet home. If nothing else, at least this movie introduces us to the concept of the shapeshifters!

Ronan Hatches A Plan

Ronan doesn't have a huge part in this movie, but we do learn that he's one of the Accusers and see him fully embracing that role while reporting to Yon-Rogg. At this point, he's a long way off becoming the fanatic we met in Guardians of the Galaxy but he seems to be extremely interested in getting his hands on "the weapon."

That's not the Tesseract he's referring to either; it's Captain Marvel!

He clearly has his own plans for her, and it makes sense that this could be where his fascination with the Infinity Stones begins. A sequel could also explore the beginnings of the Kree's war with Xandar and what, if anything, that has to do with the Skrulls.

Talos' Son

This may mean a lot or very little, but it's interesting that the movie made a point of showing us Talos' young son watching his father kill the Kree. Given the changes which have been made to the Skrull general, his son (who would be an adult by now) could easily end up with a name comic book fans will recognise.

Seeing Talos' darker side could have set the stage for the child to become someone who is every bit as merciless as his father appeared to be, and he may be the one who leads the invasion of Earth.

Monica Rambeau

Carol's relationship with the young Monica Rambeau is a lot of fun and very touching. By the time she returns to Earth, Monica will be an adult and more than ready to become a superhero in her own right.

How that will happen remains to be seen (especially as fans are more anxious to see Kamala Khan/
Ms. Marvel) but the foundations have been laid and it will be exciting to find out what comes next.

Avengers: Endgame

As expected, Captain Marvel's first post-credits scene sets up the events of Avengers: Endgame, and there's a lot of evidence to suggest that Carol Danvers will join the ranks of Earth's Mightiest Heroes fairly early on in the superhero ensemble.

For starters, Captain America still has his beard while the team is inspecting Fury's pager, while the trailers have shown him cleanly shaven. Once the pager goes off, Black Widow turns around to see Carol standing there and she's anxious to know where her old friend is, so clearly doesn't realise what's happened to the universe after the snap.

Once the heroes figure out who she is and Carol learns to trust them, Captain Marvel will quickly join their ranks to help take down the Mad Titan once and for all.

Where's Goose?

In the movie's second post-credits scene, Goose (a Flerken) coughs up the Tesseract in Nick Fury's office and that's obviously how he winds up using it to power the weapons we saw in The Avengers.

The question is, what became of Goose after this? Did he escape and do his own thing or die a few years later
like a normal cat would? For that matter, is he still hanging out with Fury in secret?!

Captain Marvel's Powers

We learn during the course of this movie that Carol Danvers' powers come from a combination of the Tesseract and a transfusion she received from Yon-Rogg. However, it's hard not to wonder if Captain Marvel will be anywhere near as powerful as she thinks against Thanos, especially as he has the power of that particular Infinity Stone on his Gauntlet!

If that stone is destroyed, does that mean Carol loses her powers or will she use it to boost them?

It's hard to say for sure, but her connection to the Stones can't be a coincidence and you have to believe that this will come into play in Avengers: Endgame in a relatively meaningful way.

My comments from the other article:

"The Skrulls were awesome in the film, especially Talos who has quickly become a fan favorite MCU character. Yes, it was perhaps a bit unexpected for the Skrulls to be portrayed this way, but its clear that Feige was thinking much further ahead and properly introducing the alien race first and worrying about Secret Invasion later on. Its clear that Talos and the other refugees are just trying to survive and have been caught up in the midst of an intergalactic war that they want no part of. Does this mean that the rest of the Skrulls are not evil?? Hell no, its as Feige says, there are good and bad members of a race (especially during war), and showing both sides is brilliant because it allows you to really flesh out the Skrulls and make them three-dimensional.

With regards to the timeline/setting for the sequel, love that Feige is planning to explore the 24 year period in which Carol is in deep space. Have the film center around the Kree-Skrull war, show us more of both cultures and then 'Winter Soldier' the movie and flip audiences perception of the Skrulls and change the fabric of the MCU going forward, i.e. heading towards Secret Invasion. Could be perfect!!"

It is very clear that Talos' daughter is being set up for someone big. The camera focuses a lot on her, especially in the scene described above in the article. She is almost certainly Veranke and I imagine will play a big role in the sequel.

Bring it on, more Talos and setting up Secret Invasion, make it happen Feige!!

@HeavyMetal4Life - The skrulls were great. Wanted them to be bad but this makes for interesting twists in the future.

@LaserKing - sure does, will allow for them to be three dimensional and have a lot of depth

@HeavyMetal4Life -
“there are good and bad members of a race”
Just like real life lol!

But can you imagine a grown up Monica Rambeau trying to talk Veranke out of the Secret Invasion? Ugh, my heart!

I loved when they were playing UNO and Monica told her to never change her eyes. I said “awww” out loud. Who would’ve known that I’d love and care for Skrulls this much.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Talos/Ben is AWESOME! Loved every moment he had in the movie!

@HeavyMetal4Life - I mentioned this in another thread but I'm gonna say it again...I think it would be more intriguing and exciting to see a sort of reverse "secret invasion" where Earth sends a spy team to the Skrull world to infiltrate a planet of shape shifters in order to investigate and sabotage their plans to assault Earth. I figure Marvel Studios wants to avoid retreating Civil War material and would rather tell a story that explores Skrull culture and continues the sympathetic narrative while building the extremist viewpoint that our heroes are trying to subvert.

@Argetlam22 - could be really interesting! Or perhaps the Skrulls blame Earth for the snap and letting Thanos win and they decide to invade Earth (regardless of what resolution Endgame has for all those that disappeared)...

Why wouldn’t she know that the snap happened? Maybe she does know, wasn’t dusted and then the pager went off? It impacted the entire universe, right? She definitely has to know about it.

@TheArlington - Regardless of Veranke becoming the catalyst for the Skrulls going bad. Their infiltration was already set into stone. How did Arnim Zola infiltrate SHIELD? By pretending to be a friend. The Skrulls will do the same.

HeavyMetal4Life - 3/10/2019, 12:24 PM
@TheArlington - I'm sure she knew it was happening. Probably was with an alien race (possibly the Skrulls) and saw a whole bunch of them turn to dust just as her pager goes off.

Why would it have to be slow burn? The movie is set 23 years before EndGame. She's probably about 10 at the time, she's perfectly aged up to play an adult Skrull by the time we are in phase 4.

It's kinda ruins the hype when the movie is getting so many mixed reactions. What are some of the problems everyone had with the movie?

It wasn't perfect but I didn't think it was "bland" or "meh" it just wasn't the game changer we were told it was which is fine. If every movie is a game changer then the phrase loses it's value.

My rating was a solid 7.5/10 if not 8. Brie was great, Ben, and nick. The starforce were wasted and so was the accusers
