CAPTAIN MARVEL Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick Weighs In On Brie Larson's Casting; Wants To See That Helmet
Brie Larson was finally confirmed to have landed the highly coveted role of Carol Danvers this weekend at SDCC - but what did fan-favorite Captain Marvel writer Kelly Sue DeConnick think of the casting?
Most fans seemed to be delighted with the announcement that Kong: Skull Island actress Brie Larson had officially landed the part of Carol Danvers in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, but there were a few naysayers out there too. Some of the main gripes seemed to be that Larson was a bit too young, and at 5'8 not physically imposing enough for the role.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kelly Sue DeConnick - who was the first writer to work on the character when Ms. Marvel was upgraded to Captain - weighed in on the casting. She seems pretty happy and says she's "psyched" to see what Larson brings to the table, but also takes some of the fan-concerns on board at the same time.
“My dream casting—or the actor who is the voice in my head—is Kathleen Turner from about 1983. She could be both sexy and awkward and powerful. She could do all of those things at once. From what I can tell, Brie Larson can do those things too. She has a gravitas and she has a power to her. But you can see she also has a sense of humor and playfulness there. I’m psyched.
The only physical thing I wanted for Carol—I was hoping for Carol to have some height. In the books she’s five-foot-eleven. There’s a little bit of an intimidation factor that comes with her being so tall."
Though she does add; “I’m five-feet tall and I can be intimidating.” As for the costume, DeConnick does have one specific piece of attire that she really hopes is utilized for the movie.
“I love the helmet! That is not a universal opinion. After we left the book, they got rid of the helmet. I have a lot of boring continuity arguments on the history of the helmet and a list of reasons as to why the helmet exists. I want the helmet!”
What do you guys think? Is Larson your pick for the role? Which variation on the Captain Marvel costume would you like to see? Sound off below.
