Kevin Feige Says CAPTAIN MARVEL Pays Homage To 90s Action Movies And Will Be Primarily Set In Outer Space

Captain Marvel resumes shooting later this year with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck at the helm. Not an awful lot is known about the movie beyond the fact that it takes place in the 1990s and will pit Carol Danvers against the Skrulls. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Feige was asked to elaborate on what's to come in the 2019 release and it's shaping up to be something special.

Asked how the time period Captain Marvel takes place
in will open up new storytelling possibilities for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Feige pointed to Nick Fury playing a key role in proceedings and indicated that it homaging 90s action movies will make it feel very, very different to past releases.

"We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, “You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.” Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the MCU. It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ‘90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel."

As for which movies from that period have inspired Captain Marvel, Feige mentioned Terminator 2 and confirmed that the majority of Carol Davers' solo adventure is mostly going to be set in outer space.

"[Not] necessarily talking about any particulars of the story, but the action elements Terminator 2. That’s about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street level car chases, and fun stuff like that. That being said, much of the movie takes place in outer space, as you might think a Captain Marvel movie would. Like all of our genre inspirations, there are bits and pieces here and there."

After Black Panther paid a brief visit to 1992, Feige was quizzed on whether or not we could start seeing more origin stories take place in this period, the Marvel Studios President made it clear that there's a very specific reason why Carol's story plays out here and it doesn't necessarily mean we'll see her hanging out with a younger T'Chaka when she blasts on to the big screen a year from now.

"I would say no. I mean, in terms of Captain Marvel and a young T’Chaka in ’92, no. That’s not where we’re headed. But we would talk about the ancestral plane sequence [in Black Panther] where, towards the end of the movie, T’Challa takes the herb again and encounters his father, where he’s like, “Hey, man. We’ve kind of screwed up, and I want to change it.” There’s that moment where all of the ancestors come behind T’Chaka. We would joke and go, “I want to see … what’s their story? What’s that story? Who was Bashenga, the first king of Wakanda? Who’s that third to the left, behind T’Chaka? What was their story in Wakanda in 1938? That would be cool.” It all starts as conversations like that. The more audiences want to see these stories, the more opportunities we have to explore different places and time."

“There was an idea, to bring together a group of remarkable people.”
-Nick Fury

It would be easy to introduce Fantastic 4 into the MCU. Personally I never liked the idea they’re from the 60’s and get stuck in a time loop. I think they’ll just introduce them, like they did Spiderman...but X-Men is something different. I really think mutants are already in the MCU and Nick Fury knows it...the man keeps a lot of secrets. I bet they were here in the 90’s, and if the movie rights are done between Marvel/Disney and Fox there might be some kind of easter egg in Ms. Marvel’s movie. Professor X probably wiped everyone’s mind on the planet, except for a couple of individuals like Fury, he can trust. He probably is waiting for the right moment so that mutants can join the rest of the world. And the fight with Thanos and all the heroes would be the perfect time for them to return. They’re seeing other enhanced individuals doing good in the world, so Professor X would remove what he’s done to the population.

@superbigguy32 - Kinda complicated to justify why they were not involved in the battle of NY.

UNLESS... They were in the other side, fighting the chitauri with Lilandra. Helping in the shadows.

@Fogs - Yeah that sounds good, or maybe most of the mutants were on Astorid M, Genosha, or the Savage Land.

@Fogs - Or you know, why they won't show up to help against Thanos...If they are aware of Lilandra, then she would understand the threat of Thanos...

It's just a nightmare to think of a legit way. IMO the best way to do it is a massive timeline reset...possibly by Kang? Back in prehistory that causes mutation. Flash forward to present day...and boom X-men always existed.

@Dacci - Hey, Kang or High Evolutionary is good.

Time Stone could do the trick BTTF's style.

That sounds about damn right to me, awesome seems like Marvel Studios Captain Marvel's gonna be great, love the 90's been born and raise on that time is one the things i'm truly grateful and a Marvel Studios movie set on that time? i say hell yes and bring it,as well as it's gonna be interesting the route Fury's character gonna be taken and basically having Captain Marvel as the first superhero in the MCU's as well, tho we already know she ain't the only one jaja. Bing it.

P.S: I have a tiny hope for Foo Figthers "Learn To Fly" to play on the movie :D

@Moochoman - it is hard to believe, but i also think she'll be fine, a lot of comedians turn out a lot better in more serious and dramatic roles, add a little villiany over it, a work out routine and give her the chance. She might turn out better than expected, it's a wait and see situation for me which is also the way i'm taking with Shazam, let's hope for the better :)

That first IM post credits scene made no sense up until Ant-Man and now maybe Cap'n Marvel. Fury berated Stark as if there's all these other heroes running around when there wasn't. Cap was still in the ground/on ice, Thor was up above, Strange was still a doctor, Peter just got out of diapers, etc.

Technically Cap could have been considered an active hero in the MCU before he "died", so that's one. Then Hank as Ant-Man in the 80s, Carol... and maybe Nick even knew T'Chaka as Panther?
superbigguy32
superbigguy32 - 3/9/2018, 7:29 AM
@Kurne - Peter wouldn’t be born in the 90’s, he’s what 15 or 16 years old in Homecoming. But they could do something with Oscorp maybe experimenting with Spiders, J. Jonah Jameson & The Daily Bugle, or Uncle Ben with May
