Kevin Feige Talks CAPTAIN MARVEL Casting Process, And Teases Her Other 'Phase 3' Appearances
Are Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain, and Emily Blunt really in contention to lead Marvel Studios' first female-led superhero movie? Not exactly, but Kevin Feige says the studio listens to our suggestions for Captain Marvel even though they aren't close to filling the role.
The upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release of Avengers: Age of Ultron has garnered many updates on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe today, and the latest from president Kevin Feige is on Marvel Studios' first female-led movie, Captain Marvel. From Edge of Tomorrow's Emily Blunt to Mad Max: Fury Road's Charlize Theron, quite a few actresses have been rumored, or suggested for the role of Carol Danvers, but it seems none of them are actually in contention; at least not now.
"There won’t be any announcements about that this year," said Kevin Feige when MTV News asked about casting the lead in Captain Marvel. "I think right now we’re scripting the film, figuring out who we want Carol Danvers to be, and really what the structure of the movie will be and what her part will be in some of our other Phase 3 films. And it would be next year that we start to really think about casting." Feige mentioning that Danvers could have a role in other Phase 3 movies is seemingly a confirmation that the superheroine will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, specifically Part II given her cinematic debut will be released in between the two-part event.
Producer Jeremy Latchman echoed Feige, and offered praise for the direction Captain Marvel is heading so far. "We have really amazing writers on the movie," he said. "Meg [LeFauve] and Nicole [Perlman] are great, and I think getting the character right first is going to lead the charge. We want to make sure we know who it is before we can start figuring out who should play it."
About the many actresses that fans have suggested for Carol Danvers, the Marvel producers admitted they have seen the fan-casts. However, "we always have a clear sense of who we want to cast and who we’re interested in," said Latchman. "We have amazing casting directors — Sarah Finn, who’s been with us since Iron Man — but at the same time, when a fan list comes out…" Regardless of knowing who they might be interested in, Jeremy Latch said, "We read [the cast suggestions], we go through it, we read the comments, we look at who people like." He continued, "Sometimes it’s really enlightening. Sometimes it’s the exact same person that they’ve been saying over and over again that we don’t think is right. It’s always fun to kinda go through it and see what people are up to." Anyhow, Captain Marvel is set to hit theaters November 2, 2018.
