5. Spider-Man vs. Electro
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was terrible, but it's hard to fault the special effects for the most part. Whether it's the battle in Times Square or the final fight – which was spoiled somewhat by a few silly moments like Electro beating Spidey up to the tune of "Itsy Bitsy Spider" – these were pretty much exactly what you would hope for when it comes to seeing comic book characters like Spider-Man and Electro brought to the big screen. The clash at the end was particularly well-handled...it's just a shame that the rest of the sequel couldn't match this same level of excitement/intensity.
4. Steve Rogers vs. The Winter Soldier
Many of us doubted Joe and Anthony Russo's action credentials when they were first announced as helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but they proved that they knew exactly what they were doing when it came to action when Steve Rogers finally came to blows with the mysterious Winter Soldier on the streets of Washington DC. It gets bonus points not only for The Winter Soldier’s impressive use of a knife, but also for fan pleasing moments such as the brainwashed villain weilding the shield and saying the famous, "Who the hell is Bucky?" line from the comic book arc this sequel was named after. Here's hoping we see more of this in Captain America: Civil War.
3. Quicksilver vs. Magneto's Prison Guards
Was this really a fight scene? Well, only sort of, but there’s no way we couldn’t include this incredible and memorable sequence here. Before X-Men: Days of Future Past was released, Quicksilver was the butt of everyone’s jokes. His silly appearance and the fact that Marvel had just cast Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the same character in Avengers: Age of Ultron didn’t help, but this scene featuring Evan Peters’ take on the mutant proved everyone wrong. As the speedster ran into action, time appeared to stop and Quicksilver made a few key alterations to the scene so Magneto could escape unscathed. It being set to Jim Croce’s "Time in a Bottle" just made it even better!
2. Guardians of the Galaxy vs. Ronan the Accuser
For those without a sense of humour, this wasn't a well-liked scene. However, the final battle between the Guardians of the Galaxy (specifically Star-Lord) and Ronan the Accuser took the typical superhero movie fight scene and turned the idea on its head in a movie which is one of the most unique releases in the genre to date. James Gunn didn't give Quill powers so that he could physically beat the villain, but instead had him distract Ronan with a dance off. Brilliant! His bemused reaction was priceless as was the touching sequence which followed as the quirky team of heroes united to control the cosmic weapon and stop the genocidal lunatic for good.
1. Captain America vs. The Winter Soldier
We talked about Captain America’s brawl with The Winter Solider, but his final battle with Bucky was a lot different and deserves to be singled out as the best fight scene from 2014’s superhero movies. Decked out in his classic WWII costume, Steve Rogers went into action with only one goal in mind; to save his former sidekick and best friend (even if it meant he had to die trying). The brutal and bloody sequence pushed the limits for a Marvel movie and Captain America echoing Bucky words back to him – “I’m with you ’till the end of the line” – as he was beaten to within an inch of his life made this an extremely powerful and moving moment as we finally saw The Winter Soldier realise that he may indeed be more than just a HYDRA assassin. What do you think?
