COMICS: Marvel's STAR WARS #1 Expected To Sell Over One Million Copies

It's unlikely a single comic book will surpass the staggering figures of 1991's X-Men #1 any time soon (it shipped 8.1 million units), but a new report says that over a million copies of Star Wars #1 will be sold this January. Check out more details after the jump.

A new report published by ComicBook.com claims that January's Star Wars #1 (you can check out an early preview here"will sell over a million copies, becoming the top-selling single-issue comic book of the last twenty years." Now, the last mainstream American comic book to hit seven-digit numbers was Batman #500 in 1993, which featured Jean-Paul Valley (aka Azreal) taking over the mantle of the Caped Crusader from an injured Bruce Wayne. Current comic figures from month-to-month usually have the top-selling books at around 100,000 units, though the massively anticipated return of Peter Parker in Amazing Spider-Man #1 reportedly reached half a million copies earlier this year. Like the relaunched Amazing Spider-Man, what's likely to push the figures over 1,000,000 is the multitude of variants on offer for the issue, with superstar artists like Alex Ross and J. Scott Campbell contributing covers, attempting to coerce readers into purchasing more than one copy. Marvel gave no comment on the matter, and it's unlikely they'll say anything about sales until the issue launches. Set between the events of Episode IV and Episode V, the issue marks the return of the brand to Marvel Comics after a tenture at Dark Horse, with Jason Aaron and John Cassaday on board to launch a new series of stories within the relaunched Expanded Universe. Are you going to be picking up Star Wars #1 when it hits shelves on January 14th?

The funny part is, that if A million people buy the first issue, for it collector value in the future, they have to realise that it will be worth very little if they print a million copies and people all board them and put them in covers safely hidden, right. I mean I'm not the only one who sees that.

The only way they'd be worth something is if a few of them have special things added so that they're rare. Just a thought.
