COMICS: Ta-Nehisi Coates' CAPTAIN AMERICA Set To Make His Debut On Free Comic Book Day
The critically acclaimed journalist and Black Panther writer's take on Captain America will debut in May, and the first few panels show that we're in for an intense political story. Hit the jump for more!
Fans will get a taste of Ta-Nehisi Coates' upcoming Captain America run in a special Free Comic Book Day release on May 5. The issue, Avengers/Captain America #1, will feature a new Avengers story from Jason Aaron and Sara Pichelli as well as the first Captain America story from Coates.
Coates is joined by artist Leinil Yu for the new story arc, which officially launches on July 4. Some of the first few pages released by Bleeding Cool seem to set up the ideas of patriotism and loyalty to an "imagined past" that Coates touched on in his announcement.
The comic opens with Captain America looking down on two opposing mobs carrying Hydra and anti-Hydra signs, and the following monologue:
So much has changed. The Great Wars are over, they say. Like you, we rebelled against the old-world elites. Like you, we embraced revolution. You and I were allies once-- revolutionary allies.

The story promises to be politically charged, based on the bold direction Marvel has taken the character in the past couple years and on Coates' previous writing. However, we'll have to wait until May to see how deep into these themes Coates actually gets.
