5 Most Likely To Take Down a Deranged Superman (DC only)

5 Most Likely To Take Down a Deranged Superman (DC only)

So here's the loose scenario;
Superman is going berserk on the world and whatever the cause is, it's permanent. The only way to stop him from destroying our fine little planet is to take him down. Who would be the 5 most likely to do it?

Before we begin let me clarify; we are talking individuals specifically, not any teams/leagues/groups/clubs/tribes or what-have-yous. A straight up mano-a-mano with the Big S to stop him from destroying Earth. Which also means that some of the biggest and baddest villains are out of our equation, since saving Earth is the least of their concerns (sorry Doomsday fans), and even some "heroes", who tend to stay out of Earthly affairs.

Now my comic-devoted comrades, we can begin. I will go from 5-1, the #1 spot goes to the character I believe most likely to succeed in the Superman-gone-psycho scenario.

#5 -- Captain Atom

Living-nuclear-energy, pretty bad-ass I must admit. Atom has super-strength, speed and flight, and would most definitely try to go toe-to-toe with Superman if need be. He's extremely powerful, enough to physically manipulate large objects and even control red-sun radiation, my second favorite Superman weakness. While Atom lost the fight with Supes, he still put up a good one. His abilities also seem to be getting stronger, and maybe if he were better trained he could be the one to pull it off. His powers seem mostly limited to his suit, which has the nasty tendency to rupture at even worst times than Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunctions. Maybe if he came out with enough red sun backing him, Superman wouldn't beat him into a nuclear-purée.

#4 -- Captain Marvel

I don't underestimate this kid, he can pack a punch. Captain Marvel is also a magic-based character, and magic being a well-known weakness of Superman would give Cap a nice edge in this battle. They have battled many times before, and Marvel has walked away with the cake on many occasions. "WTF, ONLY #4?!" Some of you may be shouting furiously at your computer screen. I admit, it may be a low rating for the kid who cried "Shazam!", but if the Man of Steel can take him out when he is a good guy, imagine Supes frothing at the mouth like he just snorted a barrel of bath salts. A Superman savagely attacking no-holds-barred with the intent to butcher? I don't see twinkly-toes walking away from it. Maybe though, and that is why he made the list.

#3 -- Green Lantern

I would sacrifice the next twenty years of my life for a stack of nachos and front row seats to watch this fight. The Green Lantern yields arguably the most powerful weapon IN THE UNIVERSE. If he can wield radiation from the red-sun combined with kryptonite; Hal (or whichever you believe to be the most bad-ass Lantern, different debate) may be hanging the red cape on his trophy shelf. The Green Latern's biggest downside is that the ring is controlled through his own will. Its a weakness in most ways, especially if a deranged Superman is trying to munch on his innards. I could see that being slightly unnerving. Either way, it would be a good fight.

#2 -- Lex Luthor

Whoopie! At least one bad-guy made it on here! Lex Luthor has been preparing to take down Superman since day one. While many would fail simply through lack of preparation, this mean-bald-machine far from lacks in that regard. We know he has or at least knows where to get kryptonite, and we also know he would do everything he could to take down Superman and save the world (even if it would just be to rule it.) He's one of the few who has killed Supes in some storylines and might be the one to do it in our scenario. We know Luthor is evil enough; while many of our previously mentioned heroes would wince at the idea of killing their leader. Then again, Luthor's a little nuts himself, and is just human after all.

#1 -- Batman

Batman fanboys and girls rejoice, the man in black gets the number 1. I didn't choose it easily, mind you. Plenty of charting and calculations along with thousands of polls sent out lead me to these results. Ok fine, I may be a little biased, but here is a little evidence to give me some backing:
Many of you know Batman carries with him kryptonite just in case of emergencies like this. He has planned, he has prepared, and he can probably do it. He is a crazy genius, a good guy (which totally gives him an advantage in comic-world), but also hardcore enough to stake the Man of Steel through the heart with his biggest weakness. I'm not the only one who thinks so, Superman would even agree with me. He is, after all, the one who gave Batman the kryptonite in case something like this happened. In several comics the Dark Knight has taken down Superman, so I'm going to go ahead and say he would be the one to do it again.

That's it boys and girls. Some of you may be applauding, some fuming, and some stopped reading after I mentioned Captain Atom. Don't worry, the comment section will allow you to tear me to pieces. I made my case, and now I'm going to go to IHOPs to refuel.

scrap batman and lex and replace them with wonder woman and martian manhunter. both lex and batman survive fights with superman because he's generally a nice guy and won't punch they're faces off. without that limitation, lex and batman are screwed. remember, superman has gone apesh!t crazy, so i don't know if a guy with pointy ears and a green rock will stop him if he wants to fry him, or whatever city he may or may not be hiding in, from space.

@jpfola26
they would have to work fast, because a ballistic superman is a dangerous force of nature. They already have contingency plans if that were to ever occur, but still it's a very slim chance they will survive. They can only hope things work out for there plans to be a success. Things like "I hope Superman doesn't fly through my house right now at the speed of sound while I'm on the toilet" or "I hope Superman doesn't snipe me with his heat vision from the stratosphere".

You Batman fans are a riot. No way, Batman would get annihilated. Martian
Manhunter should be onThis list. What about supergirl?

Superman sees three batjets, he blows up three batjets with heat vision. He sees Batman on the ground, he fries him with heat vision. Once he realizes it's a hologram..from a distance..he fries the surrounding area where batman may be hiding.
...or...
batman tries to lure superman into the batcave. Superman destroys the batcave.
...or...
Wonder Woman and/or Martian Manhunter go toe to toe with him.

Sorry, we are talking about a deranged and evil superman, not the superman who will fight fair.

Captain Marvel? You mean SHAZAM! :p

And as for Batman taking down Superman? You kidding? Let me guess, "he needs prep time"! xD

kong - 9/18/2012, 1:53 PM
LOL, Superman could kill batman just by looking at him (heat vision). I think Hal has the power to do it, but he still can't. Shazam may be able to do it though, but he's the only one on your list that doesn't have a huge disadvantage. All of them together though would end up having another issue of "THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN!!

Sups has xray vision, he wouldnt even have to blow them up. He
Could SEE batman wasnt even in the planes. If you say that those
Planes are led lined, im gonna laugh.
I doubt very much a batplane blowing up would daze superman.
Holograms arnt to effective if you have xray vision. One look
And he would be able tell they were not even alive.

Lure him into the batcave aye....hahahahahahahahaha!
How about when superman decides to just bring the
Batcave down on itself by dropping a mountain on it.

Look... Batman is awesome but come on, superman
Could just fart and blast batman out into space
Luminus
Luminus - 9/18/2012, 2:42 PM
This article is absurd. Superman would kill them all, easily. That picture of Superman fighting Batman is also absurd. How can Superman misfire, when he's looking directly at Batman? It's not like he has to turn his head to aim; just look at where you want to shoot and it's done.

Anyway, this issue has already been addressed in the comics: http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Superman_Annual_Vol_2_3

It's always Batman who takes down a rogue Superman; ridiculous.

Just have the entire Green Lantern Corp. subdue him, like they would Parallax.

lanternstorm - 9/18/2012, 3:05 PM
Personally I would have put Captain Marvel as #3, Green Lantern as #4 (even though he's able to create limited Kryptonite) Superman could eventually get around it because it's not as strong as real kryptonite. #2 would have to be Firestorm... all he'd have to do is transform the ground into Kryptonite. Firestorm nearly did kill him once in Challenge of the Superfreinds. Batman would stay #1... but you absolutely need Firestorm in there though. Nice list though.

very nice with firestorm, dude may be able to hold his own with him, but batman wouldn't survive againsts a superman willing to kill who isn't holding back.

If Batman can defeat Superman, why didn't he stop Doomsday? He had plenty of prep time, while Supes was holding his own against the creature. Meanwhile, the entire Justice League was defeated. Guy Gardner didn't even put up much of a fight.
lanternstorm
lanternstorm - 9/18/2012, 3:44 PM
Batman's had years to plan for what if superman lost control. He's already got back up plans for those plans. Batman's the most paranoid character in the DCU... kryptonite ring, kryptonite bullets, Zatanna on speed dial, and a supply of unshaped kryptonite in all of his bat caves that he can get to at any time. Batman has the greatest tactical mind on the planet, he keeps a piece of kryptonite in a lead lined case on his utility belt at all times. Batman would be the #1 hero to stop Superman as he's had to do on several occasions.
ellispart3
ellispart3 - 9/18/2012, 3:57 PM
@lanterstorm
Batman would be the first hero to die if Superman would go about it correctly. Back up plans for back up plans are all still hinged on the idea that "if things work out, we can beat Superman by..." and fighting a deranged Superman is far beyond what Batman is ready for. You're right, he has many plans to kill Superman that more (I would hope) than shot him with a kryptonite bullet. But you forget what he's dealing with. It's Superman. The guy who is faster than speeding...something, i can't remember what, but he's fast.

Hell, if Superman was that bad and evil at this point, he wouldn't let them know he's gone rogue until he attacks. Give Batman all the prep time in the world, with his planing, he may survive the longest, but he won't stop Superman going full fledged crazy. And let's not even think about Superman taking a dip in the Sun first before he took on DC heroes.

I can't remember any situation where Superman had gone homicidal and batman stopped him. Superman has gone been controlled by Poison Ivy, but was still able pull his punches and Batman came out ok after using Lois as a pawn (which I doubt would be useful in this situation).

LYK OMG YOU GUYZ R ALL JUST JEALOUS OF BATMAN LEAVE HIM ALONE. #BATMANFAN4LYK

just kidding. Shazam needs to be higher up on the list, as in number 1 or 2. This is coming from the guy who really only likes Batman from DC's list of characters. Batman should be #5 or 4 at most.
Luminus
Luminus - 9/18/2012, 4:36 PM
@ellispart3: I just linked you to a comic where Superman goes homicidal, killing Manhunter in the process. But when I think about this argument, I'm reminded of this beautiful line from Watchmen:

"The world's smartest man poses no more threat to me than does its smartest termite." – Dr. Manhattan.

That's Superman in a nutshell.

All the Kryptonite in the world wouldnt be able to stop Superman from flying at Batman quicker than anyone can see. At that speed, he could punch Batman's head clear off his shoulders and into orbit before the Kryptonite had too much of an effect on him. I dont care if Batman was standing on top of a mountain of Kryptonite...
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/18/2012, 6:41 PM
Also, Lex doesnt deserve to be on this list. He has failed to beat Superman more than anyone in DC comics. In fact, with his track record, Lex Luthor should be the first person to be left OFF this list.

Captain Marvel, Bizarro, Doomsday, and Martian Manhunter would have the best chance to stop him.

Or the ultimate Superman hitsquad from the series "Justice": Parasite to steal his powers. Metallo to weaken him with Kryptonite. Bizarro to hold him place. And Solomon Grundy to pound on him.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/18/2012, 6:44 PM
Martian Manhunter has the physical abilities to go toe to toe with Supes. He can also turn intangible, basically negating Superman's physical abilities. He is also telepathic and could wreak havoc on Superman's mind.

In a solo fight, MM has the best power set to stand a chance.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/18/2012, 6:53 PM
Or you could always go the cheap route and say The Spectre
Tainted87
Tainted87 - 9/18/2012, 7:14 PM
In "Doom", Metallo nearly does Superman in by shooting him with a kryptonite bullet.

It made me think, considering how simple each contingency was for every hero... all anyone needs to do is get close enough to Superman without him knowing it.

NewNameWhoDis
NewNameWhoDis - 9/18/2012, 10:44 PM
You guys do realize that Batman has, on numerous occasions, done exactly what this guy is saying and whipped out a little kryptonite and put an end to Supermans brainwashed shenanigans before, don't you? You're all acting like its completely ridiculous, but Superman KNOWS Bats is capable of pulling the trigger when nobody else can. Batman has contingency plans for every member of JLA. You don't think he could take down 1? You're all thinking in terms of pure, off the cuff brawls. Bats is too smart for that. Bats wouldn't come at him head on. He'd wait til he's distracted and he'd attack strategically. Everybody who said WW because of tactical reasons..c'mon. Batman is just as "tactically" capable as Wonder Woman, but he's so much smarter. Quit thinking in terms of strictly power and think about it from a tactical stand point. There is a reason that Lex Luthor, a completely powerless billionaire genius, is Superman's arch enemy. Its not all about "superman can just fly at him and take his head off". If you honestly think Batman would take him head on, you're a got damn moron.
NewNameWhoDis
NewNameWhoDis - 9/18/2012, 10:49 PM
Also, anybody suggesting villains at all are retarded. If a villain was capable of actually defeating Supe's once and for all, they would have done it by now. Dumb asses. They are the ones who come at him the most often and fail, and you're all still "oh what about Doomsday?". Tried...failed...he only slowed his heart rate and ALMOST killed him. Supe's DID kill him. Seriously, any villain who has ever fought Superman and failed to kill him shouldn't even be mentioned.

I thought that was Deathstroke
Angelus
Angelus - 9/19/2012, 1:37 AM
How can this even be a discussion? Batman is without a doubt cooler than Supes but cooler does not mean he stands a realistic chance. Sure, there could be a scenario where Bats actually could take him down, if Hal, J'onn, Diana, Barry and the rest held Supes down. Then Bats could come walking and hit him in his face. That's about it. Superman is faster than light and lift a blackhole. That's not something mere intellect can defeat.

Even glowing with kryptonite radiation Batman can't defeat Superman:

@Ripynt - http://www.comicvine.com/myvine/citizenbane/superman-vs-batman/87-79268/ - That's every fight that was at least canon/non-canon before the new 52, with exception of those really old timers. Even in the new 52, Batman does not stand a chance.
