Animal Man's Origins Also Altered In The DCnU

The "New 52" continues to make alterations to it's character's classic origins. Previously we heard Wonder Woman would have a Father and the Daddy issue continue with Animal Man, but with a twist. Click for some SPOILERS from issue #3..

With any revamp or rebooting of an established continuity some changes are inevitable, and DC continue the tradition with Buddy Baker. Animal Man has always been one of my favorite lower tier characters so I was delighted with how well Jeff Lemire handled him in the New 52. However I have yet to read the third issue which reveal some major changes for the character and his overall calling/purpose.

From Newsarama..

With Animal Man #3, writer Jeff Lemire has revamped the superhero's origin for this new DCU, which isn't a surprise. But what is perhaps more unexpected is that Animal Man's new origin takes importance away from him and places it squarely on his daughter.

In the story, Buddy Baker enters a mysterious realm known as the Red, and he finds out he was given superpowers only so he could prepare the way for someone else: his four-year-old daughter, Maxine.

Interesting stuff. Could this pave the way for some type of passing of the torch from Buddy to Maxine? Could we see an "Animal Woman" at some point? Like I said I have yet to read this issue for myself so don't know all of the details, but only time will tell.

Lemire has said that if he could he would call it Animal Man and Animal Girl. I could see Maxine as a future superhero.

The swamp Thing introduces the Black (rot) in it's new issue. These two books, Swampy and Animal Man, are the best thing the new 52 has.

I'm loving the stuff with the Red. Animal Man's origin needed to be rebooted. I always hated the aliens giving him powers thing.

What if she's destined to be a villain? That'd be a cool dynamic. Have him reticent to use his powers so as not to feed her darkness? That's a good read.

yeah that's my point. His origins are more or less honouring what went before. Its been mentioned the Red is the source of his power, along with Anansi and aliens. Really they just picked a definitive from an already extensive list of origins. They didn't really reboot it they just consolidated it.
