Superman has one of the most well-known comic book origins outside of the vigilante career that begins in Crime Alley. Kryptonian scientist Jor-el discovers that the planet is in danger of exploding and tries to warn the ruling body to no avail. Desperate, he sends his infant son to Earth aboard a spaceship, moments before Krypton's destruction.
But what if Krypton's demise wasn't due to natural causes? What if someone intentionally destroyed the planet? That's the new wrinkle being added to the Superman mythos in Brian Michael Bendis' first issue in DC's new Man of Steel title. An alien powerhouse named Rogol Zaar is claiming he manufactured the planet's destruction out of fear that their expanding empire would threaten galactic peace. Years later, he's out to finish the job by taking out the last survivor of Krypton, Superman.
There's other side mysteries presented in the debut issue but most comic book fans are focusing on the new villain and speculating on the veracity of his claims. Krypton's destruction by outside forces isn't exactly something new as other takes on the origin tale position Brainiac as the mastermind by the tragic events but the planet's downfall is still widely accepted as the fallout from natural events.
