COMICS: Bruce Wayne Will Be The ONLY Batman This September!

Hit the jump to get all the details on DC's plans for their Batman range of titles, including the confirmation that Dick Grayson will no longer don the cowl as Bruce will be the only Caped Crusader...

After two years, former Robin and Nightwing Dick Grayson's reign as Batman is coming to an end: "In both Batman and Detective, Bruce Wayne is going to be the main star as Batman," Batman editor Mike Marts confirmed. "Bruce Wayne will once again be the only character to be wearing the Batman costume." An announcement regarding the future of Dick Grayson is expected sometime today, while news on Grant Morrison's ongoing work on Batman (including what this revamp means for "Batman Inc") is promised to hit later this week. Many thanks to IGN Comics for the following cover art and quotes.

Batman #1

"We're making history in that this is the first time we've had a Batman #1 in many years. We're fortunate to have Greg Capullo on as artist and Scott Snyder – who is red hot after his work on Detective and American Vampire. With the two of these guys leading the charge, this book is going to be fantastic."

Detective Comics #1

Written and drawn by Tony Daniel, here's what DC had to say about the relaunched iconic series. "Marking the first time Batman will appear in a debut issue of Detective Comics, the series will find Bruce Wayne on the trail of a dangerous serial killer known only as the Gotham Ripper."

Batman And Robin #1

Current creative team Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason will remain on this title. "This is the first time we're seeing Bruce Wayne and his son Damian acting as a team, together, as Batman and Robin. Previously, it had been just a father/son role or mentor and student, but this is the first time they are actually working together as a team. That's going to be very interesting because here you have a family dynamic of father and son who have the most unique relationship, and not the most perfect of relationships. That will provide for a lot of interesting stories."

Batman: The Dark Knight #1

Written and drawn by David Finch (assisted by Jay Fabok) the relaunch of this already new series sees, "a twisted adventure that pulls Bruce Wayne deep into the halls of the famed Arkham Asylum, a jail for Gotham City's most dangerous and criminally deranged."

I've always felt like Batman is too personal an identity to really be shared among many people. Still, since they did decide to ake Dick there, I'm hoping there's a payoff for the readers. Even though I don't really read much Batman, I like Mr. Grayson (was not going to set myself up by saying "I like Dick.") as a character and I thought it was cool that they were putting suh a focus on him.

Def not pleased - I feel like the entire "Battle for the Cowl" and new Batmen-storyline was a complete waste of time now. Dick as Batman and Damian as Robin was a great storyline and I enjoyed reading it. Seems like DC is just taking a giant step back (again). Why is it impossible for characters to move forward in their stories nowadays? Superman dies, he comes back, he has a new costume, he gets his original, he then gets another new one. Batman's back gets broken, we see someone else be Batman, then his back gets healed and Bruce is back, only to then "die", see Dick take over as Batman, only to have that completely wiped from the slate as well. You can do this with every. single. DC. characters. Batman, Superman, Robin, Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder-Woman, etc. - they've all had "major changes to their status" that ends up being reversed. :(

I'll miss Grayson as Batman. He and Damian had a great dynamic, and was almost more interesting then Bruce has been in a long time. But there is only one real Batman.

Cool! Hope Dick becomes Nightwing Again except continues to have a Batman style suit mixed with the Nightwing suit.

Well people are realising comic book continuity is a mess, this is what happens when you try and write a character over this many decades.

Damian is still going to be Robin in the Batman and Robin books,but with Bruce as Batman again.Now THAT is a dynamic I want to see played out!

An unnavoidable result of Marvels invention of the continuing storyline.
I'm not complaining but thats the truth of it.

This is really dissapointing.
Not only have they relaunched their original comic-book series with a number one, but for seemingly no reason except sales. It's not even a reboot? So continuity will be changed, but there will be no retelling of the mythos for the new age? Are new readers supposed to catch-up on the story by reading everything from 1939 onwards, including all the crises? Fix this DC!

2 things I see wrong with this approach though is that there are 2 many Batman titles still and not enough new faces in terms of writers and artists. Scott Snyder will do ok as his work kind of echoes Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka. But other than that, DC should begin recruiting new creators like Marvel does. And trimming the line up of Batman comics would make things less confusing. And they should also let each series last 12 issues and then start back at 1.

@Amazo

Marvel's invention?

I mean comic continuity has always been a mess, its the inherent problem of having a man be 35 for 70 years lol.

Amazo - 6/6/2011, 8:07 AM
@ironpool007
Interesting idea...I think I'd prefer it if they kept each title as its own continuity though.Say put Batman,Superman,Gl,Flash etc in the same continuity but have Detective,Action etc as seperate one off (maybe 12 issue runs like you suggested) adventures.It would help cut down on the multi bat-book crossovers and yet keep the feel of a large universe.If you catch my drift? :)
Amazo
Amazo - 6/6/2011, 8:11 AM
@Forthesakeofnow
Marvel is widely credited with the invention of on going continuities as well as the personal 'real' day to day lives of its characters.
Like I said,I'm not bashing it or anything.Its just become necessary for all these reboots if you want that style of story telling.Batman for instance can only have so many adventures in his 20's and 30's before things get tight and a bit knotted.
Before Marvel started telling stories in this way you'd have a seperate adventure every month etc.Some loosely connected to others but on the whole as stand alones :)

Wow, I guess Batman, Inc was a pretty pointless series?
But Bruce IS the one true Batman.

@ncreb that's pretty badass, although I'd prefer it to still be blue instead of red, red looks a bit evil, especially the eyes.

@Amazo wow, that's brilliant! And you should definitely post it in fan fic, never seen anything like that there before!

So much for Dick Grayson evolving in this storyline; back to Nightwing with a Daredevil-type-spin on his costume :(. Losing the cape makes sense at least, but I would've preferred something more new and unique looking. His hair flailing all over the place never made sense to me either.

It's obvious that this isn't a complete reboot now, but it really just seems like DC is asking their fan base to give them a "re-do"/do-over. I'm not a fan of this!
