COMICS: Dave Gibbons On Whether The Watchmen Should Join The DCnU

Rumors persist that DC/WB may put some kind of sequel or spinoff from Zack Snyder's Watchmen into production. But also, now that we have the upcoming DCnU coming up, that the characters could find their way in there. Co-creator Dave Gibbons shares his thoughts..

Zack Snyder's Watchmen was considered something of a box office failure on it's release. But many fans and critics hail the movie as a flawed masterpiece and it's certaiinly very popular here on CBM. But does anyone really want to see more from those characters? The movie's lack of solid BO means that we will most likely be spared a sequel despite persistent rumors to the contrary, but what about a follow up to Alan Moore's cherished comic?

Apparently there are murmurs of having The Watchmen brought back, either for a sequel or a reinvention, and joining the rest of the rebooted characters in the DCnU. CBR caught up with legendary artist/writer and co creator of the Watchmen Dave Gibbons to get his thoughts on the matter..

“I think, without wishing to sound like a deposed dictator or a mob boss, that I’d like to take the Fifth and at this point say I reserve my position and say I have no comment to make. [...] It’s not something that I’d personally like to see happen. I sense you’re drawing me a little off the position of not commenting on it, so I think I’ll kind of leave it like that. What I would say is, intrinsic to the whole idea of Watchmen is that they existed in a world that was the way it was because of their existence. And I think to transplant them into another world actually removes a huge part of what is the essence of Watchmen.”

What do you guys think?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that would be the worst decision in history. it would cheapen everything about the Watchmen universe. Whoever initially came up with that idea should be shot.

I think it would be quite cool seeing Dr Manhatten or something take on Superman :P

This aggression will not stand, man... This is the worst idea I've ever heard. Who's the new Creative Director at DC now?

And the movie wasn't even good, it had nowhere near the same tone or depth as the book.

I see no reason why they couldn't have a situation where the Watchmen universe is within DC's 52, untouched, so as to sustain the original the way it is, but then also be able to use alternate universe versions of the characters. For instance, what if there was an Earth-BlahBlahBlah where things went a little differently and they could do a crossover between Rorschach and Question or Batman? That'd be cool to read, and since it would be in an Elseworlds kind of capacity, it doesn't cheapen the original because that's the "true version".

If we can have retcons that retcon a retcon's retcon, then this wouldn't be that confusing lol.

i never READ the watchmen COMIC BOOK, but the movie was REALLY GOOD!

I don't SEE why they wouldn't want TO put them in the JLA!

Superman is supposed to be the first Public Superhero in the DCnU so adding the Watchmen wouldn't make any sense at all in a continuity standpoint. While it would be nice to see Nite Owl and Silk Spectre in the JLA, it just wouldn't make any sense.

Watchmen was an aweful movie, a complete waste of time, and at the same time similar to most DC/WB "products".

The Watchmen have a place in history. That's where they belong. It makes no sense to mix with other characters and make them part of their stories.

Dr. Manhattan vs. Galactus?

It would make absolutley no sense at all. Besides all the heroes would be dead and old. Not to mention Rosarch is the best character and he's already dead. And then if you have Dr. Manhattan, there is no need for Superman and the Justice League.

no no no no NO!!!
This DCnU looks bad enough as it is, why the [frick] would they tarnish something as legendary as Watchmen by adding it to that universe?
Watchmen is a stand alone series. No sequels, spin offs, remakes, nothing. Nothing else is needed.

The movie was fantastic, and one of the only instances I think a near exact adaptation from book to film could work. Because it's a limited run.

Plus there's no room for a sequel!
Rorschach and The Comedian - Dead
Dr Manhatten - Playing God on a planet far, far away
Silk Spectre and Niteowl - Probably retired
Ozymandias - [frick] knows
The Minutemen - old and decrepid

The ending was left intentionally ambiguous, a utopia which could be ruined by Rorshach's journal. No need to find out what actually happens.

Gibbons knows what he's talking about. In short:
Watchmen - Gooooood
DCnU - Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad

Dont mix them, or you lose the integrity of a graphic novel which has been iconic for 20 odd years. It's bad enough they're [frick]ing up Superman so bad.

HELL MUTHA Fing NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I am all for the reboot, but this is a whole different animal, there is no way IMO that you could do a sequel and not screw it up. Maybe some of the early adventures would be cool to see, but I really believe when something is great it should just be left like that and remembered like that.

brewtownpsych
brewtownpsych - 8/11/2011, 12:41 PM
the other important reason to not do this is that a lot of the characters are based on iconic comic book character archeatypes; 1) the comedian is a twisted, merceniary version of Captain America, 2) Rorschah is based on the Question, 3) Niteowl on Batman, 4) Dr. Manhattan on Superman (kinda), etc. Idea is dumb and would ruin a key element of what makes it good.

(and just a note to DC movie bashers, remember the original fantastic four movie, original captain america movie, the original punisher movie, nick fury with the Hoff, the new fantastic four movies, ang lee's hulk, x-men 3, spider-man 3, wolverine, daredevil, elektra, ghost rider? remember those gems? that's what i thought.)

Absolutely, unequivocally, totally, irrefutably, unquestionably, definitively, completely, unconditionally, emphatically, indisuptably, explicitly, unambiguously, and in no uncertain terms, NO. Not just No. F*CK no!

The Watchmen is a stand-alone masterpiece. It was never meant to tie in to the DC Universe as we know it. Trying to tie it in would be the biggest mistake DC could ever make. Well, okay, second biggest. Doing a sequel, prequel, and/or reboot to the Watchmen, unless Alan Moore himself wrote it would be the true biggest.

This could be a rights issue.Rumor is, DC made a deal with Moore and Gibbons that
a few years after they finish publishing Watchmen, the rights would revert back to the creators. This has something to do with an editorial decision made in the 80's to draw British talent to America and DC and away from Marvel. DC has held onto the rights because they kept rereleasing Watchmen graphic novels every few years and had the movie in development since 1990.After finally releasing the film in 2009,DC had nowhere else to go because Moore won't write a sequel. This could be a desperation move to keep the door open for a Watchmen sequel by putting Watchmen on a separate earth from the main DC continuity the same way they might bring back the JSA on it's own earth.
