COMICS: DC Gaining Ground On Marvel

COMICS: DC Gaining Ground On Marvel

The latest industry statistics reveal that despite Amazing Spider-Man setting new records, DC Comics is rapidly narrowing the gap between Marvel.

Take note all you DC fans out there. Over the last few months, what many comic book shop owners and industry insiders thought to be an erroneous blip is turning into a trend. DC comics has slowly but surely gained marketshare points to close the gap between its chief rival. Marvel enjoyed a 16 pt lead on DC in May but then saw the gap shrink to 11 pts in June and now 9 pts in July. Many are predicting that with the DCnU debuting this September, DC has a real shot a surpassing the house that Lee and Kirby built.

Superman

It should be noted that DC's gains were not at the expense of Marvel but at the rest of the market. With DC's gain, publishers like IDW, Image, and Dark Horse saw their numbers drop. While Amazing Spider-Man #666 [which you can see a preview of here] sat at the top of the charts, selling over an estimated 150,000 units, Captain America #1 came in at a surprising second place, defeating the likes of Fear Itself and Flashpoint.

Be sure to head over to Bleeding Cool as they have a lot more statistical charts for your viewing pleasures.

Glad to see that DC is gaining more interest. I have a feeling that it is because people want to see what leads into/causes the reboot of DC but either way, good for them.

This should not be viewed as DC vs Marvel, but just DC improving.

Hopefully it doesn't taper off too much for them following the 52 relaunch.

@HelaGood. Let's see what they do with Dark Knight Rising and Man of Steel. They have shown that they can do it with the Batman. I still have hopes.

MARVEL RULES!

i don't know if the dc 52 relaunch is gonna help or hinder the company.yes they may gain new readers but they may also lose a lot of their long time readers.also how many of these 52 new issues are gonna be still going 6 months - year down the road.

i'll be definetly be reading green lantern, the flash & red lanterns.not sure about justice league & justice league dark yet & nothing else really intrests me.

As far as actual comics are concerned, neither DC nor Marvel truly "rule." Steve Geppi rules, and largely determines taste.

A shame.

Man I gotta go get that spider-man issue. And the movie might have contributed to caps recent success in the comic world.

Props to DC for finally putting their shit together, now if only they can take a leap like that in their film industry...

DC is doing something no comic company has ever done, so its not surprising that their sales are going through the roof. i reall do hope they do well, as i think both DC and Marvel are both equally good for the industry.

dc may overtake marvel when the relaunches come out, but it's all downhill from there, after people have seen the bad choices they've made with this relaunch..

DC will surpass Marvel in a couple of years.
JohnTom88
JohnTom88 - 8/5/2011, 8:54 AM
Marvel still reigns with better pool of writers, DC doing this stunt for shock value with plenty of artists doing the stories.

For the couple of months or so of course most readers will be curious to read the new books but then they realize the 2nd rate stories written by artists.

DC vs Marvel

ThePhantom1
ThePhantom1 - 8/5/2011, 8:57 AM
ya know I've been watching the chat about some Marvel titles lately, and it seems to me Marvel is pretty much doing the same thing with its major titles, just their not doing it all at one time, I mean how many Marvel titles have started over in the last 2 years and how many are still to be started over soon,(i.e. Future Foundation, is just another way to start Fantastic Four over)

DC has "closed the gap" before, this is nothing new. Marvel still does better than DC.

In fact, just less than a year ago, December 2010, DC Comics was the leading publisher in Retail Dollar Shares, while rival Marvel Comics was the leading publisher in Unit Market Share.

DC COMICS 33.07% 36.99%
MARVEL COMICS 32.28% 38.90%

This article is misleading.
