COMICS: First Crossover Event For DC's The New 52 Reveals A Change In Policy

The first crossover event for the DCnU pits OMAC against Frankenstein but the most important news here is the fact that tie-ins are being handled differently at DC Comics.

I think everyone knew a crossover event from the DC New 52 would happen at some point however, I bring news that DC just might be changing how crossover events are handled. The first such event pits two of DC's top monsters, OMAC and Frankenstein against one another in what is sure to be a knock-down-drag-out fight of epic proportions. However, what's intriguing about this news is the fact that while the story will be covered in both O.M.A.C. #5 and Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #5, the two titles will merely complement one another. Instead of being required reading, the two titles will merely tell the same story from two different viewpoints. Said Kieth Giffens, who co-writes OMAC with Dan DiDio, "One of the things I'm proudest of about this Frankenstein-O.M.A.C. crossover is that I think we're doing it right," he said. "We're doing it in such a way that if you're just reading O.M.A.C., you're not obligated to go out and buy an extra comic unless you want to. I personally would buy both, because the whole thing fits together much neater that way."

What we're doing is the comic book version of Rashomon," Giffen added. "We'll give you the full story from O.M.A.C.'s point of view. If you want the full story from Frankenstein's point of view, you pick up the other book. They compliment one another. They are not continued in the next issue. In other words, if you buy O.M.A.C. and then don't buy Frankenstein, you haven't missed half of a story. What you've missed is a lot of point-counterpoint stuff that will enrich the story being told."

If you're anything like me, you're enthused by this news. Instead of having crossover events that require you to buy 4 other comic books jammed down your throat, the choice is now left entirely up to the readers as to which books they'll buy. Hopefully, DC decides to adopt this policy on all future crossover events.

This will certainly not be the standard. That would be passing up a chance to sell two comics instead of one. DC knows how to do math. At least, they can count to 52.

Is it just me or does OMAC look a little like Gladiator of the Shi'ar Empire from Marvel?

sounds a lot less complicated than buying multiple different books to finish an event. Hopefully this policy will be for every crossover event and not just OMAC and FRANKENSTEIN.

@Neonhero- yes, 2 is greater than 1, but 1 is greater than 0.
So often I'll be reading say, Flash and it continues in Green Lantern to complete the story. If I'm not aware of this until I pick up the comic to read, I have to drive back to the comic shop to buy another comic, or bother the guys at the shop to hold one single comic instead a run of something. It's annoying.
On top of that, I'm not going to start reading GL just because I was forced to pick up a single issue cause it had Flash in it.
Now if I read a Flash story where he fights GL for some reason or another (and it's good) and I get the complete story from Flash's perspective, I will probably be more inclined to find out GL's side of things. It's tricky cause it's gotta be a story so good you'd read it twice. But if it is, I would and then you might see me subscribing to GL to see what happens to him next.
Look at Ender's Game. Great book. Ender's Shadow did the exact same thing as DC right now. I read Shadow first and it was so good I went back and read Game.

By the way, the game.

Has OMAC ever met Deathlok? That would be a good Marvel/DC pairing.

I've had no interest in "Frankenstein", since on the surface it seems like a blatant ripoff of "Hellboy" and the "B.P.R.D". I might be completely wrong, but it's enough for me to not bother finding out.

I know nothing about OMAC, really.

BUT, based on an interview with writer Scott Snyder, it seems his "Swamp Thing" book and the "Animal Man" book will intersect at some point soon, as they are part of the same mythology, and I bet it will be handled like this. Or at least I hope it is.

Cool concept for crossovers. The more successful this attempt is, the better chances they will apply it in the future.

Frankenstein is a surprisingly good comic. I wasnt too thrilled with OMAC though

This, I have to say, is the way cross overs should be.

Haven't bothered with either titles, IMO they don't look that interesting. The crossover sounds pretty cool though.

it's not really an "event" though so i wouldn't expect any tie-ins. haven't ready any of these but Lemire's Animal Man is phucking great.

Thats because Avengers and X-Men are two massive comic titles and teams and there is more story there. Frankenstein and Omac arent well known at all besides Mary Shellys novel and the movies. Im a DC Fan and I havnt been following either title because I just cant afford to buy as many comics as I used to and also because they just dont seen that interesting

Wow...I've always been marvel through and through but this year I'm reading more DC titles than ever. They really have their act together and seem to be listening to the readers where Marvel are just trying to bump their sales and get wring as much money of of the reader as possible through crossovers and tie-ins.

That is actually a very invetive way to do a crossover, and I'm hoping we get more like these. I still like a good old-fashioned crossover, but this really makes it a point to see an event from different perspectives.

OMAC is one of the comics in the new 52 i wanted to be great. I loved the old buddy blank omac and he was cool looking, this one not so much. I do like the idea of the crossover and the pov type thing, but it would be better in different good books.
GLprime2814
GLprime2814 - 12/28/2011, 10:34 AM
Wow that's cool I like that DC is paying attention to their readers and not worried to stuff their pockets, one of the things that I disliked about comics in 2000 to present was that they over saturated crossovers one of the culprits was superman who I liked his last story arc before 52 had to be followed n every superman family book, that's like 5 books to get one story across.
JustDame
JustDame - 12/28/2011, 10:48 AM
Umm? Not stuffing their pockets? They're selling you the same story twice. If they're not tryna stuff their pockets they'd just alternate between the two comics like the Deadpool/Thunderbolts crossover a couple years ago. Those were pretty common, i think.

Fastestmanalive - 12/28/2011, 11:26 AM
I dont read either of these titles but the idea in general is great, I really like it, it was annoying having to buy another title to finish the story with crossovers.

Good going DC. anyways off to the comic store to pick up my DC comics. :)

I used to always knock on DC but after the new 52 I have switched from Marvel to DC. I buy 20 titles a month Venom from Marvel,4 from Image and 15 from DC. Now that Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire are DC exclusive sorry marvel

if you like batman and you have extra money to burn try out the animal man and swamp thing both are well written and are about to be DCs big crossover I love Venom from marvel and most things That are dark in nature. also I,Vampire is great the cover looks all twilight but the interior art is great and the writer is almost on the level of Rick Remender and Lemire and Synder and Kirkman
