Comic’s First Lady FINALLY Assumes Her Throne!

Comic’s First Lady FINALLY Assumes Her Throne!

After years of being the number one comics super heroine in existence, DC gives Wonder Woman the bragging rights to verify she is one of the company’s most prominent “Trinity.” Will this help the company win its gender war with Marvel Entertainment?

According to Brian Azzarello & Cliff Chiang of Sensation Comics, DC is finally putting its money where its mouth is with the Amazing Amazon.  A historic first, with multiple opportunities for visibility, Diana will assume exactly three titles in August and October!
  • She will headline her own book: Wonder Woman
  • She will have her adventure romance title with the man of steel: Superman/Wonder Woman.
  • We will see her reestablish her original title Sensation Comics featuring Wonder Woman title.

Publishing around the same time, there will also be a Secret Origins issue dedicated to her background and beginnings. Why is this historic news!

Like Kal-El and Bruce with multiple books, she finally has the vehicle to substantiate that she’s a heavy hitter in the DC Universe! Previously male heroes not only claimed authority in regard to fan popularity but they could also prove it by demonstrating the company’s willingness allow fans to show the companies confidence with receipts.  Provided that fan boy and girls like her stories, with multiple adventures a month, she finally has an opportunity to demonstrate how spectacular she is.  Of course books will all have to performance at peak box office levels to distinguish this sales strategy was a powerful move.  In other words, yet again planning to completely reinvent the comics industry, Warner Brothers Entertainment and DC comics has their work cut out for them.

Do you believe DC’s new strategy has any merit or do you see any potential for comics to revolutionize the industry?

Brian Azzarello & Cliff Chiang aren't on Sensation Comics, they are on the Wonder Woman title (which they are leaving in a couple issues).

I don't get it, Wonder Woman has had her own solo comic books for decades and decades, and, there's a gender war? I didn't know...

@Sentry

Weird mindset. I saw some people elsewhere comment the woman Thor is to give Marvel more female solo stuff and the way the comment was written acted like there are barely any, which is odd considering off the top of my head there is Black Widow, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Elektra, Storm, all female X-Men team and more that I'm not listing. Will it EVER be enough for these people? [frick]ing hell...

I never really liked the pairing of Wonder Woman and Superman being in a relationship, it seem's a bit off to me.

I do however want a live action Wonder Woman film.

This is the first time in something like 30 years that Wonder Woman will headline two books of her own. Which is really the message that should be front and center in this topic.

When it comes to the female reader though, I think Marvel's got the bigger part of that market pie right now. Chucking the teams that made WW and Batwoman work was not a good move.

As a WW fan Superman/Wonder Woman is a book that I completely miss the appeal of. Every time I look at a preview it just looks horrible.

@aresww3:
Don't they change her origin one way or another every decade? Her character is changed more often than that, heck, its positively fluid with every writer having his/her own take. Its one of her main problems. Is she the hard bitten warrior? The sheltered princess of power? An exuberant youth discovering the world? The compasionate ambassador? etc. etc.

DC has a golden opportunity to provide a definitive story arc for our favorite Amazon. There are two big problems with Wonder Woman that hopefully will be resolved in the near future.

1) The focus on Greek mythology needs to go. DC needs to reign that in to bring her in line with the other members of the Justice League. This nonsense about her being the child of Zeus has been a complete disaster that takes her in a direction that is regressive. It also traps her story in these ridiculous contradictions about her role in "Man's world," the relationship to "gods" and where she comes from Themyscira. There is a creative way to reconcile these aspects of her AND to honor her origins and hopefully DC will figure this out.

2) Her rogue gallery needs to be bolstered. This would also give DC the opportunity to create iconic female villains that Wonder Woman can battle. One thought would be a rivalry with the now more famous Faora. Not all female characters have to be heroes. They could do interesting things with villains also.

The current relationship with Superman is one of the best developments in her entire history. The idea that either her or Superman could or should have lasting relationships with mortals is absurd other than as a brief lesson in why those relationships can never work out. This is a reoccurring theme in comic books and especially comic book based films. For so many reasons, it allows Wonder Woman to explore that side of her character without making it seem outlandish (even in a comic book sense).

@Forthas:
I don't agree with cutting back on the Greek myth aspect at all. It IS a defining and creative way of handling her they put out there and makes for cool stories. The problem here is the readership, completely stuck in the way a superhero is supposed to work.

The medium (in America) needs to get broader and putting an icon of the genre that's drowning everything else out (once again, in America) into a book that doesn't conform to form was a great stride in that direction. And also because WW isn't the draw it was in the 60's and 70's but she's the biggest icon such chances can be taken with.

Superman + Wonder Woman is a cheap shot and the sooner that's over the better. Its fan fiction writ large, created by writers completely stuck in the genre because they grew up with it and can't imagine things outside of it. The success of the 80's can largely be attributed to (mostly English) writers who didn't grow up with super heroes and thus saw things differently and really changed the game.

Superman and Wonder Woman are exactly the types who'd have relationships with mere mortals because feeling compassion for them is at the core of who they are. In the case of Superman its even more extreme because he basically renounces his origins and feels he's really a human and not an outsider at all.

Remember, he's just from Kansas.

The books currently doing the best which aren't just name recognition boats like Bats, Supes, X-Men and Spidey are all heavily influenced by the specific creative team on them and almost entirely free of editorial influence.

And yes, she shouldn't be the child of Zeus, but that's a different matter all together.

@ Vortigar

Nobody buys into the Greek myth nonsense. That is exactly why movies such as Clash of the Titans and the Percy Jackson stories do such middling to bad at the box office. The reason is that in a world of ‘gods’ there are no rules and comic book readers as well as comic book movie fans want a certain amount of logic to their stories. Even Marvel which has no qualms about presenting a story with a talking raccoon played down the mythological aspect of Thor as a being from another dimension worshipped AS a god. That is a brilliant idea that people relate to since no one in our society currently believes in the Greek gods as they have been portrayed , but the prospect of superior alien beings is something that all of society excepts as a statistical probability not just a possibility.

Superman and Wonder Woman is a WONDERFUL (pardon the pun) development. I have always questioned why a character like Superman would find any sort of commonality with someone like Lois Lane. In fact their relationship upends a major character point about Superman - that while he was raised on earth, he is in fact not an earthling and is obviously different. Suggesting that he can have any type of normal relationship with a human would suggest that he is not different from us. You cannot have it both ways. In addition, a relationship with Lois Lane is at its core an act of selfishness on the part of Superman. Knowing that it will make her a target of his enemies and STILL pursuing a relationship with her and the fact that it could potentially cloud his judgment about who he should save is contrary to what Superman. That was the problem I had with the Superman movies. He was always there to save her, changing time, and pretty much serving as her personal bodyguard. What if God had a favorite person and gave that person whatever they wanted but ignored everyone else. Would you think of that God as fair? No…you would see that God as petty and preferential. The same as Superman was with Lois. Having a relationship with a person like Wonder Woman changes that dynamic. He does not need to save her all of the time and she – just as he did – CHOOSES to be a superhero and accepts the consequences. Thus their relationship has balance something he would NEVER have with Lois. This was excellently portrayed in the Dark Knight films in which Batman had a relationship with three women. Just Like Lois Lane, one was too weak to live in his world (Rachel Dawse) and he always had to save her and was compromised by his love for her which ultimately cost her her life; another was rich and powerful just like Batman even having the same training (Talia Al Ghul) but unlike Batman could not let go of her need for vengeance and therefore Batman was forced to clash with her. And finally there was one who was just like him (Selina Kyle) who also walked the fine line between the law and criminality but at her core was a good person and that brought Batman someone who could balance him. This is EXACTLY what Wonder Woman can and should do for Superman and something Lois Lane could NEVER do unless she became a superhero.

Which is exactly why the Greek gods are so cool, they're NOT fair and yes, they ARE petty and preferential. They are 'just human' in their mannerisms and as flawed as anyone else. So them, or Supes, favoring someone isn't unfair, its just the way it is and creates a dilemma for them they can't just punch.

It's mighty practical of Kal-El to fall in love with Diana but love is never really practical. This is why I call it fan-fiction, its a cheap and easy way out for both characters. How can it be selfish if he falls in love with someone? Its not like you choose that shit.

Yes, there's a problem with him dating a human, which is the point, that's what makes it interesting. He cares about us because he's been raised as one of us. Him being with Diana eliminates story possibillities. Its a nice avenue to explore in some kind of alternate universe but not in the main books. I'm not giving this stuff a long life, they're going to break up when the novelty wears off or whenever DC comes with their next Crisis.

No rules because of the Greek Gods? There's already no rules because of the existence of superpowered people in the first place. Heck, the New Gods are part of the DC-verse... Why are these Gods so different? Because you assume they're different? The Greek Gods are always in contention with one another and the world around them, they are not of the Christian God type that can just pop everything into and out of existence at a whim, they're super powered beings dependent on the sway of the times and have to keep each other in check but know none of them will ever truly die because they are ideas personified.

We're never going to agree on this one, there are too many basic assumptions we're completely at odds on.

And Clash of the Titans and Percy Jackson don't respect Greek myth at all. Hades always ends up as the Judeo-Christain Devil, which he's not. Zeus is portrayed as the absent clock maker, which he's not. And the rest in between usually just make cameos or serve as guiding roles. Nobody cared about Clash and the like because they're bad friggin movies.

Come on, the prettiest of the girls with a mean streak is forced to marry the ugliest dude with a heart of gold. And even though he tries his best she utterly despises him. Why isn't there an Aphrodite/Hepheastus movie yet? That is a brilliant premise right there.

Wondy's book is going back to standard super hero fare right now though. So you're getting your wish and I'll probably not be buying it anymore. They might still surprise me.

"We're never going to agree on this one, there are too many basic assumptions we're completely at odds on."

AGREED!

I just wanted to comment on one point then feel free to have the last word. True love may not be practical but for relationships to be successful it does take a certain amount of compatibility as many divorced persons would attest to. That is my point, that the relationship between Lois and Clark Kent is forced and not in any way logical. It was only put there to give Superman a person to save and to try to connect him with humanity. Now that the comic world is far more evolved with a shared universe, it now makes no sense for Superman to have a relationship with her since he is MORE compatible with Wonder Woman. If it also happens to be practical then great...I don't personally think it is that practical because Wonder Woman carries the baggage of coming from a world where men are not her equal and Superman from the American Heartland where he might have developed rather naive notions about people. Those kinds of issues can be explored and could make for some interesting story telling.

For the record I liked Clash of the Titans. I think it followed the original a bit too closely but I thought for the most part it worked. The other movies ...you are right they are bad movies. Thanks for the conversation!
