DC To Reboot Universe With All New Status Quo And #1 Issues This September?

DC To Reboot Universe With All New Status Quo And #1 Issues This September?

Apparently, the fallout of Flashpoint will see all of DC's comic books renumberd as #1 issues along with a different status quo, new books, characters, creative teams and much more...

There's been hints and speculation regarding this piece of news for weeks, but Bleeding Cool report today that September will see DC renumber every single one of its titles as a #1 issue. Here is an excerpt of their report, although you can head on over to the site by clicking on the link below to read more details.

Every comic continuing from September will be relaunched with a shiny #1. Every. Single. One. With no current plan for the renumbering to reverse to any so-called "legacy" numbering.

And with those issue one renumberings, will come a new rejigged status quo. And yes, characters will be changed. Some may no longer exist. There will be new books, new creators, new teams, new characters and new...new. With no current plan for the new status quo to be undone or reversed.

So, what do you guys think of this? Personally, I'm pretty pleased as despite having spent the past year catching up with the Batman and Green Lantern series of titles, I still find it something of an ordeal to get my head around DC's convoluted and confusing continuity. Regardless, be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Don't DC reboot their continuity every few years or so? As long as they do it right in a way that makes sense, and don't pull a Brand New Day like Spider-Man did, then it should be fine.

But doesn't it get annoying having all the characters introduced yet again, as if they were brand new characters?

Starting fresh completely sounds like a good idea. Should be interesting to see what characters are out of the picture, and if they'll be introducing any new heroes to the forefront! :D

Yeah, I think this is what's needed. I think Marvel need to do it too.

They better not [frick] up DC'S entire history.

so there gonna start fresh again, so the previous dc history going to be retconned, well what ever it is hope fully it will help me get in to DC. and don't see why marvel need a reboot aswell. Last time they rebooted a character it didn't go down to well.

This is stupid. Whats the point?

And they better not renumber Action Comics, I mean it just reached 900, or for that matter Detective comics, Superman or Batman, cuz its a real acomplishment to reach such high numbers.

And for the rest of them, they just did this. I mean Flash is up to 12, Wonder Woman is up to like 40 something. the only one thats getting there is GL which is up to 66 but for everything else big whoop.

And this bs about "No current plans to go back to the status qou" yea right. until they get bored with this, Im not holding my breath.

Speaking of BS " And yes, characters will be changed. Some may no longer exist. There will be new books, new creators, new teams, new characters" It wont last theyre always changing things but eventually everything reverts back to its original state.

This is just a stupid marketing ploy, so DC should stop pretending that this will be ground breaking that will change things forever.

Still leave ACTION COMICS alone!

I was talking a universe-wide reboot along the lines of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

@ Fastestmanalive- Maybe this is DC's way of getting ownership of what happens in Action Comics #1. Trying to pull the wool over the legal eyes of Shuster and Siegel.

I agree that this is a weak marketing ploy. Apparently, they have killed off and rebooted all of their characters to the point that killing off and rebooting each storyline makes the most sense in their minds.

Yeah this was what I thought too, and it gets me a little worried. I hope that's not the case.

That would be clever, but I don't see how that would work. Hopefully Superman stays where he belongs.

@plasticman: About your Action Comics theory-It doesn't work that way.

Anyways, I'm really dissapointed to hear this. I want to know their reasoning behind this. Also, I don't think the info we get implies that the universe is being completely rebooted. I will get angry if that turns out to be true.

This is why I like Marvel's continuity better, they're able to keep a stable-ish history, DC just keeps rebooting over and over again. Don't get me wrong, my favorite DC characters are Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and a couple others, but I'd prefer DC not do the constant reboot. Everyone's got an opinion, this is mine.

It would make for some interesting stories if Superman wasn't in the DC Universe. What would the Justice League be like, who would be the leader, etc. I fraggin' LOVE Superman, I don't want him to be out of DC's universe though.

@StevilNYC: I don't think you understand it correctly. With the limited info we've got, you can tell that their talking about changing the mainstream DC universe. Their not talking about creating a new universe, and having both universes present at the same time.

Seriously MARVEL COMICS did this too!

And they went back to original numbers, its been done B4!

An that's what will happen again with DC!

It's gonna be interesting to read that's for sure.

@Dynamo I get what you mean dude but it isn't really necessary the continuity is more or less straight forward for comic book verse any way.

I doubt anythings going to happen to Green Lantern since thats Johns baby. I just wanna know if this is just a renumbering or are they actually going to change the past history of DC
plasticman
plasticman - 5/31/2011, 11:12 AM
@ golden123- I know it doesn't work that way. Just like rebooting every comic to #1 doesn't increase comic sales.

Good.

I hate what theve dont with Batman. He's a freakin joke now. Batmen running around the plant. Really really dumb. Been waiting for this since they sent Bruce Wayne back in time.
BlackSands
BlackSands - 5/31/2011, 11:12 AM
Marketing ploy, it's obvious! They're trying to bring in newer readers as well.

Sometimes change is good. Sometimes, not so much. It only remains to be seen if this move will be better than the last one. One thing is for sure; the more things change, the more they'll stay the same. I bet there will be another "reboot" 20/30-ish years again.

The problem something like this stems from the many influx of writers coming and going. Every writer, regardless of how a book bible is laid down for others to follow, will always get changed to how the new writer/s will want to make their own spin of the story to how is should be in their eyes.

What I'm trying to say is that with every clean slate DC will give every other decade to their aging line of characters to refresh it - it's always gonna be cluttered again when some idiot throws in some "plot twists" down the line to screw it up. I don't care if they reboot it. Heck, it's guaranteed that they'll do so again later on when someone writes their universe into a corner again.

golden123 - 5/31/2011, 11:13 AM
@ar8898: Yeah, Geoff Johns either needs to be fired, or there needs to be restrictions on how much continuity he can change (the more logical choice). I hate how he has no respect for continuity and just goes around "fixing" things to work better with his vision.

i hate crisis's. I'm still ticked off that For Tomorrow was taken out of continuity pretty much right after it was published. The best Superman story in a while that finally gave him some potential a poof, gone.

I think it's genius! Luckily when I got into Green Lantern they were then doing the 'Secret Origin' run and it didn't take long to get back copies either. For characters like Thor there is 50 years plus to go over to catch up with everything the way it currently is. I think this allows people like my girlfriends brother the chance to get in on titles without feeling like he's missed something. Green Lantern has gone through a lot, although 'War Of The Lanterns' has been awesome so far, it does need a refresh from the complicated event-heavy run it's had...IMO.

With the cinematic universe making great headway in the public domain it's a great time to refresh, reboot or reshuffle long running titles. It will only make the characters more accessible to the regular mass'.

We all need a change otherwise we, and the companies, get complacent and stale.

Roll on September!

Pretty sure they're gonna make the DC universe more realistic. Just like Ultimates did to open the path for the movies.

If that's the deal, I'm IN!

i think its great. DC is trying to make their characters more accessible to new readers, much easier to start reading at a #1 then at #67. Also, who says thei are restarting eveyrhthing maybe things go back but just nott to the way they were. I think its a great idea.
