James Gunn Shares Thoughts On DC's Movie Slate And Thanos/Darkseid Comparisons
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn reveals that he isn't quite sure if the recently announced DC Comics movie slate is "interesting or not" and believes that Darkseid being brought to the big screen "would be a strange choice" due to his similarities to Marvel's Thanos...
There are some similarities between Marvel and DC's upcoming movie slates, but whether those are deliberate or coincidental is something we will likely never be privy to. Talking to IGN Movies recently, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was asked to share his thoughts on whether bringing Darkseid to the big screen in a future Justice League movie would in his opinion be too similar to what Marvel have planned for Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "That would be pretty weird, I think. That would be a strange choice." The two villains obviously share a physical resemblance and their goals aren't too dissimilar, and while the comic book Thanos was influenced by Darkseid, some viewers could end up believing that Warner Bros. are ripping Marvel off when he's brought to the big screen! As for his thoughts on the slate itself, he revealed that he's not sure "if it's interesting or not," adding: "The truth is, it's a list of titles, and if they're done well they'll be good. If they aren't, they won't be good. But I think we have a little bit more of an idea of what we're getting with Marvel. I mean, we know the actors, we know the characters -- we've seen movies with these characters. You have some idea of what's going on already. We've told a big part of the story. With DC, they haven't told the story yet." An interesting point, eh?
Going back to Thanos, Gunn agreed that the Mad Titan hasn't yet been given the chance to really show off what a fearsome threat he is to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that he, "needs to be developed more. He's just a blip in this movie. So he needs a lot more development before he can take on the entire, you know, Marvel Earth Universe at least. So we'll see what happens."
