UPDATE: COMICS: Geoff Johns To Step Down As Writer On GREEN LANTERN

After nearly a decade on the book, along with reshaping and redefining the characters and their universe, DC has announced Geoff Johns will step down as writer on Green Lantern so that he can focus more on his other books. Update! Johns has written a letter explaining his departure.

Geoff Johns has been a staple for Green Lantern for close to 10 years. He was tasked with making Green Lantern relevant again, while introducing and refining the emotional color spectrum as well. That will all change come May, as Johns has announced he will be leaving the title. "I'm really proud of all the stuff we've built with Green Lantern, from Larfleeze to the different corps. The universe has expanded and will live well past my run. It was more than just telling another story, but really giving back to the character by expanding and adding to their mythology," Johns told The AP. He also said that he will be focusing more of his effort on Justice League, Justice League of America, and Aquaman with his new found free time away from Green Lantern.

While sad to see his run on the Green Lantern title coming to an end, Johns will be working with at least one of the characters still. Simon Baz was his creation from the start, and he will continue to write him in the pages of Justice League of America. He also promised a huge departure issue for Green Lantern when his run is complete in issue #20. For the latest on all things DC Comics, make sure to check back here at CBM.

UPDATE: DC has sent over a letter Johns has penned to fans thanking them for their support along to with the art for the over sized, 64 page issue. Click the image to enlarge.

So here’s the sad news: Doug Mahnke and I are closing the GREEN LANTERN SAGA that began with GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH #1 with this May’s 64-page GREEN LANTERN #20. As every storyline is coming to a head, it feels like the right time. The book is still doing great. The characters are as vibrant as ever. Let’s go out how we started – on a high note.

Counting up between the GREEN LANTERN monthly series, REBIRTH, BLACKEST NIGHT and the various one-shots and specials…that makes over 100 issues of GREEN LANTERN I’ve had the absolute privilege, pleasure and fortune to write.

I’m obviously ending my run with a little sadness because I love these characters, every single one of them. But I’m walking away feeling very proud of what we’ve done and very grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with so many fellow creators. It’s that collaboration, and every reader out there, who have made this a truly special experience. It's hard to imagine a GREEN LANTERN universe without characters like Atrocitus, Larfleeze, Saint Walker, the Indigo Tribe or the rest of the gang anymore. And I can't count how many Lantern t-shirts of all colors I continue to see.

It was Dan DiDio and Peter Tomasi who I first spoke with about GREEN LANTERN. Dan was the Executive Editor of DC Comics at the time and Pete my editor on JSA. They both wanted to relaunch GREEN LANTERN. My very first proposal that I could find dates back to September 2nd, 2003 meaning I’ve been working on GREEN LANTERN for nearly ten years in some way or another. I’ll never forget Dan telling me his idea for the title, “Rebirth,” he said.

Through BLACKEST NIGHT and BRIGHTEST DAY, literally, Peter Tomasi has always been there. From the incredibly long conversations and debate on REBIRTH to later writing GREEN LANTERN CORPS beginning with the conclusion of SINESTRO CORPS and up until today, Pete has been my creative partner in crime and what GREEN LANTERN grew into would not have happened without him.

And, of course, look at the amazing artists I worked with: Ethan Van Sciver, your mad genius was key to everything we expanded the universe into – the endless energy you have for creation is unmatched. Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, you brought a scope only you two could deliver culminating with BLACKEST NIGHT – and you’re showing the world what JUSTICE LEAGUE should be. And Doug Mahnke…he’s the current superstar I work with every month on GREEN LANTERN and have for years now. Doug, you’re one of the most amazing and unique artists in the business. Your power, grit and sense of wonder can be seen at its very best in the gatefold cover for GREEN LANTERN #20.

I’m fortunate enough to continue working with Doug as we head over to a new project later this year.

We all owe a debt to Julius Schwartz, John Broome and Gil Kane for creating such an incredible foundation to build on with Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. Without them, there would be no Green Lantern.

So what will GREEN LANTERN #20 bring? The bizarre return of Hal Jordan, the final fate of Sinestro, the revelation of the First Lantern and an ending that I hope pays off everything we’ve ever done and ever created with GREEN LANTERN. It has art by Doug Mahnke, Ethan Van Sciver, Ivan Reis and Joe Prado and I’ve poured everything I can into the script.

I’m off to focus my energy on the JUSTICE LEAGUE universe as we head into what I hope is an exciting plan – Simon Baz and B’dg will be along for the ride in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA – and you’ll no doubt see Hal Jordan and some of the other Lanterns in the world of the Justice League before too long. And Sinestro…? You’ll have to read GREEN LANTERN #20 for that…

Thank you again for reading – whether you started with REBIRTH or started this month – I sincerely appreciate your time and imagination.

In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night –

All Will Be Well,
Geoff

One of the best and longest runs of the 2000's, the only run I can think of that has gone on longer in the 2000's is bendis on ultimate spider-man. His run got me into green lantern and is one book I could always count on month to month to be great.

@LEVITIKUZ Ok, I get what you mean, to bad Dini said he would not do it... I think what WB should do is to hired Goyer or Timm has a creative consultant for DC movies and let them hired the right team.

This is deffinitely huge! The end of an era. His work on GL may have been running around in loops for some time, but the man redifined Green Lantern the way no one has ever redefined a comic book character ever. We owe Geoff Johns a GL movie (as bad as it may have been, it never wouldve gotten made had it not been for what Johns did for the character), video games, an animated series, 2 animated movies and more GL related books than theres ever been!

Good choice to leave now while he's still ahead, too The next writer will have mighty big shoes to fill... Hope its Grant Morisson!

@jCameron: It depends. Have you read the whole GL stories leading up to Blackest Night? I found those and the whole mythos created extremely enjoyable, but Blackest Night was rather dissappointing in my opinion. Much too long and drawn out with all the tie-ins.

See, here's the article about him leaving Aquaman

I thought his first arc on the new52 Justice League was ok but I want to read some more of his works. I should be getting Superman: Brainiac within the next day or 2, if not today. I'll get his run on Aquaman in HC/TP

It had to happen sooner or later. What I love best about Johns' GL run is that he didn't shy away from the continuity of it n matter how contradictory or convoluted it was. He found a way to make everything (from Jordan's fall from grace to Jordan being the Spectre to the yellow impurity) into one cohesive story. That's a very rare thing. More importantly he brought Hal Jordan back and didn't sacrifice Kyle Rayner to do it. And he brought Garder and Stewart back to prominence. On top of all that he (along with many great artists) created a slew of NEW characters that have managed to become almost as loved as any stalwart character (Saint Walker, Atrocitus, Larfleeze, etc). For that, all I can say is thank you. Whoever takes over GL is going to have a real hard road to hoe, cause those are some big shoes to fill.

First of all, keep John's and all other comic writers away from a Justice League movie. I love Geoff, but what works for a comic most of the time DOES NOT work on screen...Captain America's wings, Thor's helmet and the rainbow bridge, Hulk always wearing purple pants(Marvel took liberties, their fans just act like a Marvel movie and CBM are carbon copies of each other because they're hypocrites.)

I agree with Levi, whomever they give JL to has to respect all of them and Johns, as much as I.love when he does it, isn't a fan of the Bat. Bruce Tim is his antithesis. He loves Batman and doesn't respect the others. David Goyer is the guy, he's penned both Batman and Superman and he has a way of making the comics translate well.è

Here's hoping Geoff moves to Superman. Diggle, Snyder and Johns on Superman? My panties are wet with anticipation.

Johns GL run was GREAT. I gave up on comics after waiting for years for them to bring Hal Jordan back. It was his GL Rebirth got me back into comics, and his writing that kept me there and caused me to start buying other comics as well.
I now buy more comics than I ever have.

Rebirth, Sinestro Corps War, Blackest Night, Brightest Day, War of the Green Lanterns, New 52, Rise of the Thrid army and now The Wrath of the First Lantern. What a HELL of a run.

Wow. It's been so long since Geoff Johns took over this book, I just sort of took him for granted on it. I know I should be sad or outraged, or screaming "NOOOOO!" or something, but honestly, I'm just kind of shocked. I can't believe he's leaving Green Lantern behind...

Well, the fact is, the guy has written a TON of comics featuring Green Lantern at this point. He's done it for so LONG now, I guess there isn't much left that he has to say about the character-- in which case, it's probably a good thing that he's dropping out now, ending things on a high note.

I wonder who DC's going to replace him with? Who in their right mind would want to follow up THIS run on G.L.-- a run that completely redefined the character and his universe, and turned Green Lantern from a fringe character to one of the best-selling titles DC had in their roster?

As long as it's not Scott Lobdell (or anyone of comparably terrible writing skills), I'll be happy...

Before he took over this book, I was a lapsed Green Lantern fan. I'd loved the Kyle Rayner stories back when Ron Marz was writing them, but I thought the book had grown increasingly stale and boring. But Geoff Johns made me care about Hal Jordan, about the Corps, and about the wider DC universe again. He made Green Lantern a must-read book for almost ten straight years. So for that, I bid him a fond farewell... and I look forward to seeing where he's going to take Justice League in the future!

@jCameron James Cameron not that good a director. In fact he's pretty overrated.
I understand that loads of people love the Terminator films, but I find them very hard to sit through (possibly due to my inability to take Arnold Schwarzenneger seriously) although that doesn't really reflect on Cameron's filmmaking, just that Terminator may not be my cup of tea.
Titanic was alright, but incredibly melodramatic too and highly overrated.
Avatar was utter horse shit as a movie (visually the most beautiful move I've ever seen, but everything else [acting, script, story, etc] was awful).

And JJ Abrams is overused as well - I mean I've only seen his Star Trek movie, which I love, and I'm looking forward to the sequel and also Star Wars Ep 7, but it seems whenever anything sci-fi is mentioned, JJ's the go-to-guy for fans.

I actually think Duncan Jones would be a good choice. Moon and Source Code both prove he's adept at Sci-Fi movies, although he's still got a lot of room to grow as he's still a fairly new director (by that I mean JJ already has a lot to get on with). Plus, it helps that my ideal Hal Jordan would be Jake Gyllenhaal, based on his performance in Source Code.

Also, thank God that Grant Morrison isn't writing superhero comics anymore. If they picked that pompous windbag as Geoff Johns' replacement, I think I'd probably blow my own brains out.

@ Acira - Dude, I've been calling it for over a week now! Duncan Jones is the guy for Justice League!

The guy even went out for Man of Steel and pitched an idea for a Superman story, he has a thing for superheroes and he fits the fantasy/sci-fi mixed with pseudo-realism and drama that WB wants for their DC heroes.

Moon and Source Code were sci-fi movies that were grounded in as much reality as possible while still maintaining their sci-fi appeal.

This is saddening to me. Geoff Johns is the writer who not only got me into Green Lantern, but into DC as a whole. He introduced new and stunning concepts and ideas that very few writers could ever think of. While I haven't been keeping up with GL since the New 52 began, I will be getting back on just for Johns' final issues.

Thank you for reviving GL and getting me invested in the character, Johns. It's been a good run.
