Who are comic book movie fans? We were once a unit. There was a time where comic book fans stood proud next to eachother. It didn't matter if you liked DC or Marvel or any other smaller publisher out there. We only had to have one thing in common, Liking comic books...
Well what happened?
When 2008's
The Dark Knight was released, DC comics were considered the kings of the CBM industry, with
Tim Burton's Batman films and
Richard Donner's Superman films still close to their hearts. Marvel only having mainstream and critical success with
Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy.
Then everything changed when
Jon Favreau's Iron Man was released. Great CGI, fantastic castin and that fun after credit scene featuring
Samuel Jackson that let us know that the Marvel movie universe was about to get so much bigger. Comic book fans finally had the groundbreaking Marvel film that we always wanted, little did we know that this would spawn one of the worst internet wars ever.
Now that more and more characters began showing up on the big screen, fans began to really show their allegiance to the franchise of which they preffered. Yet things remained peaceful for a while...
But following the end of The
Dark Knight trilogy DC and Warner Brothers were struggling to get a Movie universe of their own on its feet. With the failure of
Green Lantern and the success of the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" DC fans began to be jealous that they didn't have they're own movie universe, and Marvel fans became arrogant.
Still it seemed as if things would be okay between the fandomes. Until...
Man of Steel, arguably one of the most divisive Comic Book Movies of all time was released. It was for many comic book fans a dream, others a nightmare. For those who's allegiance are strictly to Marvel, they saw it as a joke.
Now this is where things started to get dark. This is when it forever stopped being a simple rivalry. At this point in time following
Man of Steel's release, comic book fans started to not only want their own favourite universe to succeed, but they wanted the opposing universe to fail.
Now you must be asking yourselves, "Maple, why are you telling us this? We know about the war, we see it every day." But my question to you CBM community is... why?
It is our right to express our opinions of course. But why do we feel the need to put down others simply because of their preference in Superheroes? Are we that bored and insecure with ourselves that we let things get this out of control?
Yesterday some of our CBM brethren had their accounts deleted from this site because of a dumb fight that shouldn't have even happened. Perhaps this isn't the place to talk about personal things in our lives, I can agree with that. But to attack someone personally simply because of the side they chose in our "CBM Civil War" is ridiculous.
Is that really where we are?
Many of you know, that I am predominantly a DC fan. Thats how it is. When I was a little kid I identified with Aquaman the most, and it has been that way since.
But before being a DC fan and before being a Marvel fan, I'm a comic book fan.
I've loved all the MCU films, most of Fox's X-Men films and I've loved both DCEU installments so far.
All I'm suggesting to the fine people on this site is that we stop judging eachother for their preferences. If someone likes a DC movie, great! It's your right to like that film. Same goes for Marvel. Hell even the Fox X-Men movies.
I'm not saying you have to like a movie. If you've seen a movie it and think it sucks, you tell the world! But stop hating on people who do like those films, and stop preemtively hating a movie that you haven't even seen. Goes the same for those who do like a film. If someone doesn't like, a movie you can't hate on them. Everyone has the right to an opinion, but that doesn't make your opinion more valid than anyone elses.
I'm not an idiot, I know this editorial won't actually change anything, but hopefully some people will see it and understand that competition is healthy, but after reading some of the stuff that gets posted in this comment section... some of us belong in institutions.
Now to answer my original question. Who are comic book movie fans? To put it in simple terms, we're geeks. We are people whom are so passionate about comic book characters that we'd start fights with total strangers to defend their honour. But we're also a community. Sure we argue about directors and directions that movies go, but in the end we all want the same thing. For our favourite characters to get the respect and treatment they deserve.
We'll never
all be happy with the films we get. Thats impossible. But something we can do, is be happy for those who
do enjoy the films. Who knows, maybe sometime soon we'll be more than just die hard comic fans, but decent human beings.
