2022 marks the 30th anniversary of Superman's death at the hands of Doomsday, and while he was only gone for roughly a year, the Man of Steel really was dead. Now, he's seemingly dying again, but the rest of the Justice League is going with him... well, all but one of them.
Entertainment Weekly reveals that writer Joshua Williamson will take over the title from Brian Michael Bendis, ending the Justice League series with issue #75.
"It's very serious," the writer promises. "It's an interesting opportunity to do this on the 30th anniversary of 'The Death of Superman,' which happened in Superman #75. We get to take Justice League #75 and do 'Death of the Justice League.' We want people to understand, this is serious and this is gonna have a major impact in the DCU moving forward."
"It's gonna be a while, and that's gonna be a major part of what the DCU looks like after this story: There is no Justice League," he added, teasing long-lasting ramifications for the team.
The League falls at the hands of a "Dark Army," and it sounds like the plan moving forward is to focus on younger legacy heroes and the impact this has on them. DC Comics plays a little fast and loose with continuity these days, so it's unclear what this means for the solo titles of these characters. What we do know is that only one member of the team is going to return to Earth alive.
So, who is biting the dust? Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Zatanna will embark on this mission, but as noted, only one will be left standing. It could be pretty interesting for the Man of Steel to survive as that would be a neat twist on that "Death of Superman" storyline.
We'll find out when Justice League #75 is released on April 19.
