DC Comics Plans To KILL All But One Member Of The JUSTICE LEAGUE In New Storyline This April

Death in superhero comic books has become pretty much meaningless in recent years, but in the pages of Justice League #75, the entire team will be killed off with only one member set to make it back alive.

2022 marks the 30th anniversary of Superman's death at the hands of Doomsday, and while he was only gone for roughly a year, the Man of Steel really was dead. Now, he's seemingly dying again, but the rest of the Justice League is going with him... well, all but one of them.

Entertainment Weekly reveals that writer Joshua Williamson will take over the title from Brian Michael Bendis, ending the Justice League series with issue #75.

"It's very serious," the writer promises. "It's an interesting opportunity to do this on the 30th anniversary of 'The Death of Superman,' which happened in Superman #75. We get to take Justice League #75 and do 'Death of the Justice League.' We want people to understand, this is serious and this is gonna have a major impact in the DCU moving forward."

"It's gonna be a while, and that's gonna be a major part of what the DCU looks like after this story: There is no Justice League," he added, teasing long-lasting ramifications for the team.

The League falls at the hands of a "Dark Army," and it sounds like the plan moving forward is to focus on younger legacy heroes and the impact this has on them. DC Comics plays a little fast and loose with continuity these days, so it's unclear what this means for the solo titles of these characters. What we do know is that only one member of the team is going to return to Earth alive.

So, who is biting the dust? Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Zatanna will embark on this mission, but as noted, only one will be left standing. It could be pretty interesting for the Man of Steel to survive as that would be a neat twist on that "Death of Superman" storyline.

We'll find out when Justice League #75 is released on April 19.

Am I the only one who has been very meh on the DC comics the past few years?

A new Crisis is coming, ay Williamson? Heh.

Dude's been killing it, what a step-up from Scott Snyder's garbage Metal shit.

@Doomsday8888 - I will always contend Metal was a good read if you're into the more campy side of comic books. It's everything that came after Metal that retroactively made it crap.

@Reeds2Much
I only give Death Metal that kind of pass, Metal was not "so bad it's actually good" type of story lol.

@Doomsday8888 - Come on, they literally had a Justice League Voltron, Batmanium and the only twenty seconds that The Batman that Lulz was interesting! That's got to count for something.

@Doomsday8888 - yeah dude Snyder is right up there with Aaron, Geoff and Cates as far as their acclaim confusing the shit outta me

@PapaSpank54
Agreed with Aaron (lost his touch, used to be good tho, just needs a break imo) and Cates (quite literally Marvel's own version of Scott Snyder) but you lost me on Geoff, fam. :P

Unfortunately, i happen to be a big ass Geoff Johns and Grant Morrison fan.
Geoff's GL work alone puts him above all these...erm, "hacks".

@Doomsday8888 - Geoff used to be pretty legit, but recently I find his work actually grates me lol
[frick]in Morrison is untouchable, his and Liam Sharpe's GL title was maybe the best thing DC had on the shelves the last few years.

I'm absolutely lost on the current DC continuity. Impossible to keep track of the storylines. Also, as the report states, to die in comics means absolutely nothing. A few issues and they will be back again... only to die again in a couple of years.

Dead? They'll be back in 3 months. This is just a sales tactic, and DC can make extra bank when the characters return

Seems like a great idea killing off the characters that keep DC comics a float.

It'll only be for six months max.

The problem with an event like this is their solo series will continue. So the Trinity will have their own solo series (Batman with his billion and one solo series). I haven't kept up with comics lately so I don't know if any of the others have their own solo series. So in reality, as the article mentions, this is meaningless. After the Infinite Crisis The Trinity took a "year off" where Donna Troy, Dick Grayson and I don't remember who took on the mantle of Superman, took their places. But even in that year they had a Trinity book they were all three in for the entire year. After the year was up they reclaimed their mantles. I know in recent years (especially last year) there's been a push to have legacy characters "retired" from DC and have their spawn take over the mantles. Maybe that's a step toward that eventuality. But I doubt it. Especially since the popularity of Batman and Wonder Woman (both original recipes) are at an all time high right now. So yes, they may kill them all off. But I would be SHOCKED if they really did a Barry Allen and kept them dead for over 20 years. And of COURSE Batman will be the one to survive...

@BecauseICare - looks like Hal Jordan is the survivor
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/19/2022, 5:47 PM
@BecauseICare - it's wild to think a character so popular has been out of the line-up for 23 years is crazy.

Probably because I wasn't actually into comics all that time (or even born), I can't inagine seeing that happen now again

This is a bad idea. It just feels like they pushed 5G a little and decided to kill the JL to push the next generation heroes no one wanted. Except maybe aqualad
