HORIZON ZERO DAWN Exclusive: Video Game Writer Anne Toole On Adapting Her Story For The Comic Book Medium

With Titan Comics' new series Horizon Zero Dawn being such a hit, we caught up with video game writer Anne Toole to pick her mind about her new comic adaptation. Check out what she has to say below!

Horizon Zero Dawn has become one of the Playstation's best launch titles, and with a world that is brimming with lore, there are plenty of opportunities for adaptations to explore it. Thankfully, Titan Comics has been releasing an amazing series set in the game world and featuring characters found within it.

Written by Anne Toole, readers can join Aloy on her continuing explorations as she discovers more mysteries of the world around her and faces more mechanized threats than she would have expected. The comic also gives a unique perspective of the world, allowing readers to learn about other characters.

We were recently able to catch up with Toole and pick her brain about what it has been like writing for comics and video games, and how that transition has affected her work.

You'll find the full audio component along with another interview in which we discuss Assassin's Creed Origins with the book's writer Anthony Del Col below. Make sure to give them a listen and share your thoughts in the comments!

Comic Brooks: Being one of the writers of the Horizon Zero Dawn game, what excites you the most about expanding the universe?

Anne Toole: I was definitely excited to continue Talanah's story from the first game. I wrote the quests that marked her rise to Sunhawk. The comic asks the question -- what do you do when you get what you want?

Comic Brooks: What challenges came from writing for Horizon Zero Dawn?

Anne Toole: Writing for Horizon Zero Dawn was a different experience because it's an original IP. The character Aloy had already been decided before I came in, but for the most part, the characters I wrote were new. It was definitely an adventure because I worked on-site with the team in Amsterdam. I had great fun collaborating closely with quest designers and world designers, including a guided tour of the living world of Meridian.

Comic Brooks: What opportunity does the comic medium provide for this project that may have been absent in the game?

Anne Toole: The comics medium allows us to hold character moments in time in a way that is not really possible in a game. It's also a great opportunity to explore the world from Talanah's point of view, not just Aloy's, and to see Aloy herself from someone else's perspective.

Talanah, Sunhawk of the Hunters Lodge, struggles to find purpose after Aloy, her trusted friend, disappears. When a mysterious new threat emerges in the wilds, she returns to her roots as a hunter to defeat it, only to learn that a whole new breed of mechanized killers stalks the land.

Horizon Zero Dawn can be ordered from Titan Comics here.

I fully expect a movie adaption of this game. I enjoyed this game even though I did it the hard way on mistake. I wonder if whatever they explore/expand in the comic medium will factor into the game

@MyCoolYoung - I personally haven't played it yet but I reallllly want to. I watched my old roommate play for 20+ hours and it seems great.

I'm glad that the video game writers are in charge of the comic books, because it'll hopefully have that adventure in it in addition to exploring the characters.

Plus, they do Witcher, which seems to be a pretty big hit.

@LiteraryJoe - I didn’t know that about the Witcher. I never got into those but people absolutely lovvveee those.

You should, It’s pretty fun. The story isn’t super compelling like say the last of us but the game itself was dope

@MyCoolYoung - It's funny, even though I've spoken with the mo-cap/voice actor who plays Jesse from Last of II twice on my show now, I still haven't actually played more than two hours of the first one.

I've been leaning heavily toward switch lately, tbh.

@LiteraryJoe - what games on the switch?
LiteraryJoe
LiteraryJoe - 11/22/2020, 9:14 AM
@MyCoolYoung - Usually stuff that my lady and I can play together.

Breath of the Wild I restarted about two months ago. Pokemon Sword I started a month ago because both dlc are out now. I've already beaten shield, but my epilepsy makes it so I get to experience things almost like it's the first time again haha.

I love Katamari, Mario vs Rabbits, Tetris 99, Tales of Vesperia, FFVII and FFIX.

Can't think of what else I play on the system atm, been meaning to start Animal Crossing.

The game was great and had such a well written lore, so it's pretty cool that one of the writers get's to work on expanding it.

Just finished the game on PC and yep, great story, but the lore is what grabs you in imo. Glad the story matched the amazing visuals.

This game is so good but I still haven't finished it. Spider-Man dropped when I was playing this and I haven't gotten back to it. I should get back on it once I finish Jedi Fallen Order.
