How Marvel have failed in the past
Okay so first off, let me say that Marvel aren't entirely incompetent when it comes to their gaming division but if we're honest we can all agree that Marvel games leave much to be desired. See as much as this might be the golden age of Comic Book Movies, I happen to think we should be producing video games of the same quality if not then of higher. The reason I pick at Marvel is because I've never seen a Marvel game on any best video games list. Marvel has released roughly 60 games since 2000, many of which are for social networks or hand held devices but all of them are forgettable. But what good is that if we can only remember 5-ish off the top of our heads as being good?
I think part of where Marvel failed is in the department of creativity. Most of those games are either Spiderman or Xmen related. We've gotten a ton of post apocalyptic games yet developers have still managed to make The Last of us different from Fallout or Gears of War.
How the MCU success should affect new projects
Marvel has an incredible opportunity to expand their Cinematic Universe into the gaming world. They have already attempted to adapt their movies into video games but I want to challenge them to go further than that. More character cameos and using games to fill in the gaps in time left by the TV shows is how they shou;d go about it.
How Marvel can Succeed in the future
The Simplest answer to this question is... Learn from what's working! I know you were probably waiting for some eloquent and enlightening babble but it's really that easy. Incorporate what works from non comic book based franchises into our own. It's basically what they've done to make their movies amazing so why not do it with their video games? Stop trying to make a good comic book or superhero game and focus on making a innovative, unique and memorable virtual experience period!
So finally here are...
5 Marvel Video Games We're All Waiting For
1. God of War
Marvel has already given us two Thor video games but neither of them is anywhere near the quality of the God of War franchise. I'm still waiting for a Thor game that blows my mind and is so addictive that I can't stop it until I beat it.
Imagine a game in which you can
create your own Asgardian or better yet
fight as other gods like Ares or Hercules... Talk about instant revenue.
2. Batman Arkham
In my opinion,
Netflix's Defenders should be Marvel's answer to the Arkham franchise. If you really think about it, New York City in the Marvel universe is pretty much the most dangerous city on earth. At least half of earth's mightiest heroes and villains operate out of it. Marvel does have prisons equivalent to Gotham's Arkham Asylum but a video game set in New York gives the creators access to enough characters.
I want
a Daredevil game where he is given the respect he deserves. A game in which he kicks butt the way Bats would and in which I could eventually
play as Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and if legally possible
Spidey.
3. Star Wars TFU
Believe it or not this is the idea that sparked this whole article. I was looking at the concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy's
Nova and fantasized about a force unleashed inspired game. Wouldn't that be awesome? Travelling from planet to planet, galaxy to galaxy while hunting down superpowered criminals? Mastering the nova force with the help of Glenn Close?
I'm not going to lie I want a Richard Rider movie even more but I would definitely settle for a game. OOOOooo Imagine a game that's a
prequel to the movie!!! So you start out as a corpsman and finish the game as a centurion. Then we get a movie in which the Corps is wiped out, Thanos gets the orb and Rider (now a centurion because of the events in the game) is the last Nova standing... See that? That is genius! Hire me Marvel, I'll make you all rich lol.
4. Grand Theft Auto
I bet you're thinking... "How the hell can Marvel give us a GTA style video game?" One word my friends...
Taskmaster! He's not entirely unknown to the general public now that he can be found in Marvel vs Capcom. PLus, the creators have the freedom of making the story whatever they want since he has very few of his own in the comics.
Picture running around a city doing ODD jobs for super villains and SHIELD while trying to avoid getting arrested by the police or shot by Punisher. Everytime you succesfully fulfill missions you learn to copycat new moves of famous super heroes you come across in the game. Basically you get to
use the moves of your favorite heroes to do evil deeds. $$$$$
5. Resident Evil
Horror/Survival video games are as hot today as they were a decade ago. The fact Marvel hasn't attempted to make one baffles me. How would they go about it you ask? Well isn't obvious?
We need a
Midnight Sons game! A
Blade game would be epic too but I tend to think a little bigger than just vampires. Imagine switching between
Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider and wait for it...
Doctor Strange while stuck in another realm.
Or if you really want to go all out... Give us an
adaptaion of Marvel Zombies!!!
Bonus: Injustice GAU
You were probably expecting this to be the first on my list lol thank you for your patience. Marvel vs Capcom was great but this is what we really need. Marvel has so many directions they could go with this... I have my own assumptions about what Marvel AXIS is going to be about and if I'm a right that would be a great opportunity for the studio to cash in on their next comic event.
Avengers vs X-men would be an incredible fighting game too or I would even be happy with a
Secret Wars adaptation.
So what about you? Are you satisfied with your current Marvel gaming experience? Which Marvel games are on your wish list?
