How Marvel have failed in the past

Okay so first off, let me say that Marvel aren't entirely incompetent when it comes to their gaming division but if we're honest we can all agree that Marvel games leave much to be desired. See as much as this might be the golden age of Comic Book Movies, I happen to think we should be producing video games of the same quality if not then of higher. The reason I pick at Marvel is because I've never seen a Marvel game on any best video games list. Marvel has released roughly 60 games since 2000, many of which are for social networks or hand held devices but all of them are forgettable. But what good is that if we can only remember 5-ish off the top of our heads as being good?

I think part of where Marvel failed is in the department of creativity. Most of those games are either Spiderman or Xmen related. We've gotten a ton of post apocalyptic games yet developers have still managed to make The Last of us different from Fallout or Gears of War.

How the MCU success should affect new projects

Marvel has an incredible opportunity to expand their Cinematic Universe into the gaming world. They have already attempted to adapt their movies into video games but I want to challenge them to go further than that. More character cameos and using games to fill in the gaps in time left by the TV shows is how they shou;d go about it.

How Marvel can Succeed in the future

The Simplest answer to this question is... Learn from what's working! I know you were probably waiting for some eloquent and enlightening babble but it's really that easy. Incorporate what works from non comic book based franchises into our own. It's basically what they've done to make their movies amazing so why not do it with their video games? Stop trying to make a good comic book or superhero game and focus on making a innovative, unique and memorable virtual experience period!

So finally here are...

5 Marvel Video Games We're All Waiting For

1. God of War

Marvel has already given us two Thor video games but neither of them is anywhere near the quality of the God of War franchise. I'm still waiting for a Thor game that blows my mind and is so addictive that I can't stop it until I beat it.
Imagine a game in which you can create your own Asgardian or better yet fight as other gods like Ares or Hercules... Talk about instant revenue.

2. Batman Arkham

In my opinion, Netflix's Defenders should be Marvel's answer to the Arkham franchise. If you really think about it, New York City in the Marvel universe is pretty much the most dangerous city on earth. At least half of earth's mightiest heroes and villains operate out of it. Marvel does have prisons equivalent to Gotham's Arkham Asylum but a video game set in New York gives the creators access to enough characters.
I want a Daredevil game where he is given the respect he deserves. A game in which he kicks butt the way Bats would and in which I could eventually play as Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and if legally possible Spidey.

3. Star Wars TFU

Believe it or not this is the idea that sparked this whole article. I was looking at the concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy's Nova and fantasized about a force unleashed inspired game. Wouldn't that be awesome? Travelling from planet to planet, galaxy to galaxy while hunting down superpowered criminals? Mastering the nova force with the help of Glenn Close?
I'm not going to lie I want a Richard Rider movie even more but I would definitely settle for a game. OOOOooo Imagine a game that's a prequel to the movie!!! So you start out as a corpsman and finish the game as a centurion. Then we get a movie in which the Corps is wiped out, Thanos gets the orb and Rider (now a centurion because of the events in the game) is the last Nova standing... See that? That is genius! Hire me Marvel, I'll make you all rich lol.

4. Grand Theft Auto

I bet you're thinking... "How the hell can Marvel give us a GTA style video game?" One word my friends... Taskmaster! He's not entirely unknown to the general public now that he can be found in Marvel vs Capcom. PLus, the creators have the freedom of making the story whatever they want since he has very few of his own in the comics.
Picture running around a city doing ODD jobs for super villains and SHIELD while trying to avoid getting arrested by the police or shot by Punisher. Everytime you succesfully fulfill missions you learn to copycat new moves of famous super heroes you come across in the game. Basically you get to use the moves of your favorite heroes to do evil deeds. $$$$$

5. Resident Evil

Horror/Survival video games are as hot today as they were a decade ago. The fact Marvel hasn't attempted to make one baffles me. How would they go about it you ask? Well isn't obvious?
We need a Midnight Sons game! A Blade game would be epic too but I tend to think a little bigger than just vampires. Imagine switching between Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider and wait for it... Doctor Strange while stuck in another realm.
Or if you really want to go all out... Give us an adaptaion of Marvel Zombies!!!

Bonus: Injustice GAU

You were probably expecting this to be the first on my list lol thank you for your patience. Marvel vs Capcom was great but this is what we really need. Marvel has so many directions they could go with this... I have my own assumptions about what Marvel AXIS is going to be about and if I'm a right that would be a great opportunity for the studio to cash in on their next comic event.
Avengers vs X-men would be an incredible fighting game too or I would even be happy with a Secret Wars adaptation.

So what about you? Are you satisfied with your current Marvel gaming experience? Which Marvel games are on your wish list?

Not Force Unleashed, Star Wars has a ton of amazing games, and TFU is like the most overrated of them all. That being said an RPG about a corpseman more in line with KOTOR would be amazing.

Personally my favorite idea was ruined by X-Men: Legacy. A mutant based RPG where you create your character and have all of Genosha to explore and you choose one of 3 factions to join (X-Men, Brotherhood, or Horsemen) with customizable powers and costumes.

OR an Agent Venom game in the same vein as prototype. Maybe you play as Agent Venom mostly but could transform into a Mac Gargan sized Venom every 10 minutes or so.

I'd rather have a game built around the hero instead of a game bases on another popular series but not as good as the original.Beenox tried that and those games are decent at best.I want a game that makes you feel like the iconic hero making the choices they would make, moving the way they would move, playing the way they should play.Simply put I don't want to feel like I'm playing Batman Arkham City with a mod that makes me appear as Spider-man,Dare-Devil,or Captain America.I want unique game play specific to those characters.

X-Men first person shooter

You can sheathe and unsheath Wolvie's claws at will and perform a bunch of different combos. When he takes enough damage he goes into Berserker Rage mode does double damage plus gets a speed upgrade temporarily.

When you're Cyclops, everything is tinted red so you can see the world through his visor. He has the most powerful ranged attack and you can also manipulate his optic blasts to do different things. Thin, but powerful beam. Less powerful wide beam that can hit multiple enemies at once. Ricochet shot.

Shit, i gave myself a boner...

Boner taken care of...

Colossus could have the most health in the game and have grapple type attacks that are the most powerful melee attacks in the game. He could also pick up heavy objects like cars in the environment and throw them, or punch holes in weak walls to find secret areas.

Storm can fly and use wind powers to throw enemies around or also to throw objects in the environment. Also she could create frost to slow enemies and of course strike them with lightning.

Could you imagine all of this from a first person perspective? It would be awesome, and bring a much needed change to the FPS genre.

Nightcrawler would be the fasfest character. He could have all kinds of teleport powers, like teleport disarm that takes weapons from enemies hands. Teleport drop, where he ports them up in the air and drops them to the ground. His melee could use his swashbuckling skills and he could have a bunch of combos for his sword and tail. Of course he could be the stealth player and blend with shadows also.

Gambit could be really agile and have stick combos. Also he would have a bunch of card specials. 52 pick up where he shoots a whole deck at an opponent. Single card throws. His cards are limited, but when he runs out of cards he can still pick up rocks and small objects in the environment to charge and throw, but he can't use the card specials with them.

Professor X can run people over with his wheelchair.

I would be all over that game. It'll never happen though :(

ok first of all...Marvel has 3 fairly good games out right now...

1-Marvel Heroes- shit is awesome..IF YOUR A MARVEL FAN...and your computer can handle it....
Is it amazing? no...it can be a lot better...but it is pretty good regardless.

2-Marvel War of Heroes- Ive seen people waste hundreds and hundreds of dollars on this game...and they WERNT EVEN DIEHARD MARVEL FANS! This game while not everyones cup of tea is addicting and fun as hell to trade on as well as the multiplayer.

3-Avengers Alliance-This game is turn based and awesome. The PVP is some of the most amazing in mobile gaming and the reward for free to play is more than fair. Haven't spent a dime in this game and was still able to be leet. The selection of gear and characters is great in this game too.

...other than these Marvel's games, the rest suck (cept the new GOTG mobile game, pretty fun just haven't spent enough time with it to properly judge it). Marvel has a lot to learn in the game department especially for anything coming out for the consoles. Hopefully one day they will make some classics along the lines of Batman and the Arkham series.

I think Marvel doesn't have a lot of good games because they don't care about the game industry at this moment.
Just like animated movies, they make some but they don't put a lot of effort into it.

I think Feige said they don't have an Avengers game because they're waiting for the right developer, time, etc.

I dont want a game LIKE another game. I want a HULK game where you play as both Hulk and Banner. Missions for both. Transformation at the touch of a button, or if Bruce gets overly excited/stressed (run too much at once...Boom Hulk). Banner can infiltrate the likes of AIM and such while Hulk can smash it out against Abomination and the US Army.

A Daredevil game would force you to play with the detective mode the whole time. That's the way the characetr sees so you would have to see the same way.

Man I been saying this for awhile. Marvel needs to make tie-in games that fit between the movies of each character that has a movie right now. For whatever the reason they stopped (for consoles) after TFA. I was sincerely hoping for an Avengers game where I could be Hulk and destroy half the city beating up the Chitauri. Marvel is losing in the gaming dpt.

I loved Marvel Nemesis. It was underrated imo. The arena battles were so much fun. The fact that each character had different stats that you could notice, forced you to play each character differently. As an example....I would play with my boy....I was a better player, so he would choose first and then I would choose whatever character would make it the most difficult to beat him with. So he would often choose Thing, not only watch Thing really durable he was so damn strong too. But really slow. So I would choose Daredevil. Fast and agile. I could literally dodge cars that he threw at me, but when I got in there I had to hit him so many times cause his normal strength level. And it was awesome cause if he landed a couple hits I would fly across the arena and have to get back over there again. You actually felt like these characters fighting. Unlike other fighting games like Marvel vs Capcom or Injustice.

@Blackreverend cool article man. Thor is my top choice for a marvel game, with Nova, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Rom the SpaceKnight, Silver Surfer, Captain America, Hulk (with a Silent Hill atmosphere too it, especially when you go inside banners mind) all in my top 10. My idea for a thor game, is that its open world/ universe be able to explore the nine realms and the greater marvel universe, have a skill tree the last skill you learn is obviously the godblast, quests, fight alongside other heroes, transform into donald blake and see if you can keep your identity a secret on midgard whilst trying to be a doctor, face a varity of villians from loki, amora, skurge, hela, malekeith, ulik, midgard serpent, ego the living planet, thanos, surtur, fenris, the celestials the destroyer, mangog, absorbing man, the wrecking crew and hordes of dark elves, fire demons, frost giants etc. Train with a variety of heroes. protect asgard from the occasional invasion, lead asgards army into battle whilst giving orders that will determine the outcome of the battle.

I'd like another Marvel Ultimate Alliance as I still play one and two from time to time.

A Deadpool Sequel would be fantastic as that is one of my favorite comic inspired games on last generations consoles.

I'd like a Punisher version of Watchdogs as well.

I would like to avoid any more mobile apps or games based on sneaking around in the dark like Splinter Cell or Metal Gear.

A Nova game would be cool but they would have to do a better job with his flying than they did with the Iron Man titles.

I would personally like a game loosely based on Avengers Dissembled. Have the team Break Up and then show time pass and a need to get back together. Then have Captain America and Iron Man go off and help different heroes with problems at the end of which they could invite them to join the Avengers and that hero could turn them down or accept based on the choices you made while helping them in battle.

Also how about an Infinity Gauntlet Game? You would have a team of heroes to choose from both Earth Bound & Galactic. You would then send a team of heroes to stop Thanos' minions from recovering Infinity Stones in different locations such as Wakanda, New York (Triskelion), The Moon (with appearance by Inhumans), Zander (Nova Corp), Aerie (Shiar Homeworld), and even New Hala (Kree homeworld). All this builds to the end of the game where you find out Thanos did get all the gems and what you recovered were fakes. Then the sequel could be all about forming alliances to fight Thanos.
