Joe Quesada Promises That A Live Action Marvel TV Series Is On The Way!

The Marvel E-i-C talks about their plans to bring more characters to the world of television and goes into detail about doing this alongside Disney while making sure the adaptations remain "quintessentially Marvel"...

A few months ago, Marvel announced that they'd appointed Jeph Loeb as Executive Vice President, Head of Television, a newly created division of Marvel Entertainment to translate Marvel’s popular characters and stories to the television medium, in both live-action and animation formats. In addition to these responsibilities, he will oversee the development and distribution of live-action, animated and direct-to-DVD series. In the following video interview, Joe Quesada talks more about these plans and assure fans that the company are definitely considering a live action series but still remained elusive as to what and who exactly will feature in such a project.

"We have a strategy at Marvel — nothing we're really ready to talk about," Quesada told MTV News. "What I can talk about is that it's a brave new world for Marvel. Now that we've been purchased by Disney, we're part of the Disney family. Our strength, our leverage is that much more."

"Disney's an international, worldwide company, and Marvel's well on its way to becoming that as well. Marvel does things that Disney's has trouble doing — which is attracting a male audience. That's really our bailiwick, and not so much for Disney. Where they're very strong in girls, we're very strong in boys. It’s a perfect marriage."

"For Marvel, the benefits are amazing as well. We didn't have a television network, and now we do. We're part of ABC, ABC Family, and ABC Studios, and Disney XD. We're part of a bigger family. This opens us up to so many, many incredible ideas and creators that want to work with us, not just in comics or animation or film, but now also in television."

"We're talking to some people, we have some great ideas, and we want to make sure that whatever we come out with first, whatever we decide to come out with first, is explosive and just has everyone smiling from ear to ear and saying that is quintessentially Marvel."

Quesada however did insist that a live-action television project is "absolutely on the table."

"Anything and everything is on the table. We're thinking about every possibility for Marvel. The one thing about Marvel is that, it while may seem like we do a lot of things by the seat of our pants, we're a very methodical company — we think about things very thoroughly and no decision is made in a vacuum."

"So all of the this stuff will be handled very carefully, and then we'll make it seem like it comes out of the seat of our pants!"

Moon Knight would be epic. As would Daredevil, but that ain't gonna happen. FOX has the rights....remember?

As long as they don't do what DC did and let silly writers and producers ruin the mythology of their most popular hero, yeah, im all for a live action show.

What we need is a series that has the production values of "Heros" but with some Marvel characters & stories & hopefully ties back into the Marvel movie universe.

Who knows. If the planned reboot goes forward, then it could be quite a long time. I haven't heard much about the reboot for some time.

I honestly don't have any preference for who exactly they should adapt into a live action TV series...to be honest, I'd be more than happy with ANY Marvel character getting the small screen treatment! Young Avengers, Moon Knight and Heroes for Hire would all be amazing IMO. (even though the latter two would be equally well suited to a movie as well!)

How about an Iron Fist tv show? Martial arts and drama...we don't have one of those on tv yet...

The Punisher, or Daredevil in Law and Order style. Would be sweet to see Daredevil arresting the criminals, and Murdock on the judgment.

Frick the Dr Strange movie and make it into a series. Now that would be awesome

My vote is for Winter Soldier. We don't see what he did in the Cold War in the comics; this is an untapped gold mine, and they wouldn't have to risk f***ing up any established mythology.

As for Daredevil, it's been 7 years since the movie and we've heard NOTHING about Fox rebooting or continuing the series so perhaps Marvel Studios have quietly regained the rights as they did with The Punisher. Unfortunately, we've got no way of knowing until someone asks who owns him but I pray it's not Fox. The character is desperate for a decent movie (although he'd be very well suited to a TV series as well if each episode focused on one of his cases that he'd have to tackle as Matt and DD) and I'd love to see what great things Marvel would do with the rights!

A 12 episode epic like Band of Brothers would be a very cool idea to focus on the WWII adventures of The Invaders! Hell, I'm sure that Marvel could convince Evans, Stan and Weaving to even cameo in an episode or two!

its actually interesting how people "claim" the mythology of their hero was ruined by a show, yet, shows last for years with a VERY strong fanbase. But, anywaaaaaaaaay, Im all for a live Spidey show, IF its done right and not with some kid that doesnt have the chops

I want to see Iron Fist and Luke Cage get their own movie before a Heroes for Hire TV series.

Shang Chi or Nova would be awesome, too, but Nova would probably cost to much.

@Lucaxmen - yes, a procedural style Punisher or Daredevil would be fantastic.

All that said, despite all this talk about it not being Disney-fied it will end up being Power Pack.

Moon Knight: jet-setting supernatural monster fighter.

Heroes for Hire: Power Man and Iron Fist kicking butt and taking names on the mean streets, and having fun while doing it.

Quasar: average college kid given super-powered alien wrist bands that make him a hero ... and a target.

Agents of SHIELD: international spy group keeping the world safe from the terrorists regular spy agencies can't handle: AIM, Hydra and the odd lone megalomaniac.

Starjammers: "Firefly" only with super-powered aliens.

Hope this helps, Joe.

ANIL: You didnt enjoy what Quesada did in OMIT then? I have to admit that the whole thing could have been handled A LOT better and there were many, many more interesting and effective ways that they could have handled the whole thing. After two years, it was just a big let down. Hopefully though, we can just forget about the mess and look forward to "Big Time" with Dan Slott! :)

deadpool: Realy!? It works for me..! Anyway, good point about The Runaways. Characters like that are much better suited to TV - I hope that Marvel will get on with the likes of Doctor Strange and Black Panther after The Avengers rather than more stuff like that!

The Ultimate would be perfect, you know what. They don´t have to be loyal to the comics completly. They can create Ultimate version of villains. I have my own cast for that.

THE ULTIMATES

Nick Fury : Courtney B. Vance [a younger version of Nick Fury or even a bit of make up, he would be great for Fury]
Captain America : Jason Lewis
Iron Man : John Stamos
Bruce Banner : Noah Wyle
Thor : Alexander Skarsgard
Black Widow : Candace Cameron Bure
Hawkeye : Jensen Ackles

VILLAINS
Red Skull : Erik Palladino [The original one, not yet Captain America´s son]
Leader : Scott Grimes [ A fail attempt to create a new Hulk]
Kang : Jack Coleman [ A ex-SHIELD agent from the future]
Winter Soldier : Jonathan Groff [ Captain America´s best friend´s son who were altered genetically by SHIELD]
Enchantress : Dianna Agron [Thor´s ex-passion]
Justin Hammer : John Hurt

Disney needs to cancel all programming on ABC Family, or at least shovel it to another network, and rebrand it Marvel Family. It would be a place to air all of their new Marvel live action shows, new animated shows, as well as their older shows. They could even create some non scripted series that focus on the comic book industry.
Wolverine1974
Wolverine1974 - 9/13/2010, 10:21 AM
I hope that it dose not turn out to be another live action product like the t.v. series MUTANT X that ran from 2000 to 2004. It was a kinda of good show (and produced by Marvel),but it was not really that all to there in the stories. I hope that they can do better this time around.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 9/13/2010, 10:23 AM
Guys, guys, GUYS! Think about it - Marvel is now OWNED by Disney. What do you want to bet the new 'live-action' show Joey Q is talking about is going to wind up on (wait for it...) the DISNEY Channel - meaning 'kid-friendly' and full of no-talent, over-acting brats (picture 'Hanna Montana' with superpowers or 'Wizards of Waverly Place' in 'yellow spandex'... oh god, I think I just threw up a little)! Do any of you REALLY want your favorite Marvel characters represented in this way? I didn't think so...
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 9/13/2010, 10:25 AM
@loganoneil - yeah, see, I fear that too (Power Pack) but the whole reason Disney supposedly bought Marvel is because they don't own the 12-30 Male demographic.

Yeah well BALLS to MARVEL... its only because DISNEY is kicking them up the A$$!

MARVELS never cared about stuff for Live Action TV!

Heroes for Hire!!!! it's a perfect format for episodic TV and opens up an almost weekly opportunity for cameos from other Marvel heroes, not to mention the villain they'd face.

A street level police/gang drama? those never work on TV.... ;)

Or Dardevil! lawyer shows draw a bit of an audience also... it'd be like law and order meets dexter.

redsoxdude - 9/13/2010, 10:28 AM
I agree with the DD suggestion. Even if Fox still owns it, couldnt it just be shown on FX or on Fox's basic channel? I need something to replace my Jack Baurer!
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 9/13/2010, 10:29 AM
Loganoneil@ or how about ABC? you know Disney owns that too. and it only had one of the best (and most violent) shows of all time in LOST. no talent there huh? bad visuals and shitty stories too.... i hate disney... they screw up everything! and i was totally pissed when mickey mouse started anchoring sports center.. they always meddle!
