This final trailer showcases a ton of new footage, but the footage itself feels far from new. We’re treated to more static shots of Godzilla walking, more scrambled cinematography of disgruntled (and well-known) Japanese actors, and more destruction reminiscent of Legendary’s G’14. The CGI seems a tad more polished with the exception of some poorly-rendered helicopters, but if you were to show anyone screenshots from this trailer they’d be hard pressed to identify them as separate from the original trailer.
What is new, however, is the stinger shot tagged on to the end, confirming the recent rumor that Godzilla’s atomic breath would be violet in the upcoming film. The purple coloring is not far off from his usual blue, and will serve to further distinguish the already outlandish SHIN from his previous G-brethren:
Japanese culture sees violet as the color of death – perhaps the filmmakers saw this as an appropriate shade for this diabolical incarnation’s destructive powers. For what it’s worth, this shot also confirms that Godzilla is still indeed tongueless. With Shin-G so far void of both a tongue and a personality, we truly seem to be heading for a twisted atomic force of nature with zero remorse and zero relatability. Even ShodaiGoji (1954) had personality, so it’ll be very curious to see how this plays out in context.
Does this new trailer have you even more – or much less – excited for Shin’s arrival? We’ll keep you updated as always!
Godzilla Resurgence hits theaters in Japan July 29th, 2016.
