Zac Efron of Marvel

Zac Efron Mystery Marvel Character Speculation

While I'm sure that most loyal comic readers and comic book movie enthusiasts don't want Mr. High School Musical anywhere near the beloved MCU, rumor has it that he may be considered for a role. However, there have been hopes that he will be considered for the role of Matt Murdock's Daredevil in the upcoming Netflix series ("gun to my head, if he HAS to play someone" hopes, most likely). There was even a recent poll on this site mentioning his involvement with the impending Dr. Strange film that is set to happen by at least Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this must have been the result of a misread article or possibly a high hope because there has been no confirmation of said casting anywhere.
Now, with looming speculation and suspicion to go along with the noticeable reluctance that goes with casting any pretty boy teen idol, there must come some logic for us to toy with that could help us prematurely guess whose tights he might don in the near future.

1. Daredevil
I, along with my fellow CBMers, think that Matt Murdock is the most likely hero for Efron to portray. With the Netflix series on the horizon with no casting news accompanied by the idea that he will be played by someone young and obviously attractive (see every MCU hero), Efron does fit the bill. Concerns arise when considering how conflicted, deep, and brooding Daredevil is and if Efron can convey all of these emotions. I kind of consider it less important to be the perfect straight-to-TV Daredevil than to be someone actually playing in the movies, but I definitely need more the competence.

2. Doctor Strange
There is a highly intelligent surgeon/sorcerer that goes by the name of Steven Strange. His appearance has been begged for by fanboys since the idea of a cohesive universe, if not before. The most common options I've seen are Johnny Depp and Justin Theroux. Seeing as I hate both of those actors, I would rather it be someone else. Don't get me wrong though: Efron is not my ideal "someone else." I personally like the idea of Adrian Brody or Joseph Fiennes for the role of Sorcerer Supreme, but maybe mustachioed Efron has a shot. Let's hope not.

3. Iron Man
Young, cocky, and douchey. Two things RDJ is and one he certainly is not. The latter two are necessary to Tony Stark's persona, and we all know how well RDJ delivers. But we also know that his time as Ol' Tinhead is wearing thin. I don't see Marvel actually killing off Tony because he is the cash cow, both as the Avengers' personal piggy bank in the films and as Marvel's real-life meal ticket. Maybe they could consider bringing in a younger character to fill the iron boots but not necessarily get rid of RDJ. Zac Efron sure is a cocky douche. Very loose speculation but still somewhat logical.

4. Iron Fist
We know that Zac Efron is fit. We've all seen a shirtless picture of him in our sister's room, and there's no denying it. I understand that Iron Fist is also a master martial artist so Efron would need a lot of training in that aspect. For TV, I don't see that being a huge deal. Yes, Iron Fist deserves the proper treatment. But I think sufficient training rather than mastery is plenty for a Heroes For Hire Netflix series. Seriously though, put the Iron Fist mask on Efron and tell me he can't pull off the look.

5. Rick Jones
I really don't see an explanation for Rick necessary as I really doubt they'll use Rick Jones with powers. I also don't see a reason for Rick to join the MCU unless they actually make another Hulk movie. If that is a secret plan, I will be very stoked to see Zac Efron in a sidekick role in a non-Avengers movie as well as a new Hulk movie (because I loved The Incredible Hulk).

Like I said, no one WANTS him, but if he does happen to get a shot, who would you want him to play?
Also, sorry for the lack of pictures. I'm doing this from my phone.

I don't know. He'd be great on Netflix, but this guy is a rising movie star. Why would he trade that in to do TV? Actors like Don Cheadle etc are doing TV because they're at a point in their career where they can choose whatever projects they want. I feel like Efron is still carrying around that high school musical baggage and he's doing really well to shake it off and become a well known actor. I really doubt it's anything on Netflix, I'm hoping it's something on the big screen like Nova.

Honestly I don't think Efron is all that bad, I mean the shit stain High school musical movies do burn in my brain, and I do associate him with it, but I also know that just because a movie is bad, it doesn't mean the actors in them are too. I'm noticing how much he's maturing with his acting lately, and honestly I could see him playing a superhero that exist in the MCU.

Efron is very talented, just because he used the Disney Channel as a jump start for his career doesn't mean he doesn't have talent, he's done a lot since then!

But anyways, he'd make a great Iron Fist, I'm a little iffy on Daredevil but it could work.

I also think he'd be a great Barry Allen, but that's a whole other story.

Personally, I haven't seen enough "maturity" from him to want him involved, but then again, the MCU isn't exactly the frontrunner in serious film either. All I've seen is High School Musical (3 of them), a movie based on a Nicholas Sparks book, and Neighbors. Not exactly an amazing repertoire. However, I will give him credit where it's due. If the folks at Marvel see something, there must be something.

Is he really douchie? Or do you just not like him? Just seems like a general term for "person I don't like for no discernable reason".

Also I totally want him in a marvel movie, so your closing statement is incorrect. If nothing else, I bet he is a better actor than nerds give him credit for and I would also love all the conniptions his casting will cause in the community

He's a really talented actor who is only getting better.
It's great that Marvel have snapped him up.
His body is amazing, he's definitely in shape to play a superhero.

How much interference have you REALLY heard about from Disney with the Marvel movies?

And if it's true about them talking to Efron, I doubt it has anything to do with Disney, or his High School Musical role. WHat it has to do with is them seeing him as working for one of their characters, AND his apparently massive marketability to non comic fans.

I said it before, but comic fans will see these movies no matter who they cast, and MS knows that. It's the non comic fans they need to get in the seats, and Efron makes sense in that regard.

People with any "reluctance that goes with casting any pretty boy teen idol" need to just get over it. Brad Pitt, DiCaprio, etc. Whatever.

Efrons a rising star. He'd make a great superhero but I feel like most of the good marvel ones are already taken.

He's Nova or Disney owns Max steel maybe?

@ManCalled

I agree! Comparing him to Leo is exactly right, he was a teen heartthrob who no one really recognised or dismissed until he started to get really great dramatic roles. Efron will continue to be on our screens and everyone should sit back and enjoy the show.

I wouldn't mind Efron at all. He's actually a pretty good actor, and of all the "pretty boys," he's probably the one I like the most. And I don't get a "douche" vibe off him at all.

He might play a very young looking Captain Marvel.

I think he'll end up in an Inhumans movie. In fact, he looks likea dead ringer for this 'Dante' in the latest/upcoming issue.

maybe he's gonna be Namor?

I'm not an Efron fan like most people on this site but I don't dislike him either. If he is up for a MCU role honestly I think he would be perfect as Rick Jones. He has the look and the acting chops to play a good supporting role along side of the Hulk/Banner. I also could totally see him playing Iron Fist aswell. We haven't seen Efron play a full blown hero before but who knows, he may surprise us all. As far as DareDevil, I don't think he's old enough or mature enough to pull off such a dark, brooding and complex character. DD is just not a right fit for him. I'm sure that Marvel and powers at be know what they are doing and have a plan.
