AMAZING SPIDER-MAN's New Creative Team Revealed And, Yes, Ben Reilly Is Taking Over From Peter Parker!

We figured this was coming, but Marvel Comics has confirmed today that Ben Reilly will be suiting up as Spider-Man this September. Where does that leave Peter Parker? Find all the latest details here!

Following yesterday's teasers, Marvel Comics has announced that Kelly Thompson, Saladin Ahmed, Cody Ziglar, Patrick Gleason, and Zeb Wells are teaming up to "shake up the Spider-Man mythos in ways no one will see coming." Kicking off in Amazing Spider-Man #75, this new direction will see Ben Reilly return to take back the mantle of Spider-Man.

Backed by the Beyond Corporation, the clone of Peter Parker is determined to be the best version of Spider-Man there ever was. However, Marvel points out that "this could have fatal consequences for Peter Parker." Something tells us that his battle with Kindred could be deadlier than we imagined, and we can't help but wonder if he'll be dragged to hell for reneging on that deal with Mephisto.

"The whole point of working on Spider-Man is trying to put new unliftable weights on top of him—physical, metaphysical, emotional, psychological—and seeing if he can lift them. But what if that weight truly is too heavy? What if someone with the exact same skills and formative years could do better?" teases Amazing Spider-Man Editor Nick Lowe.

"Ben Reilly is back and, with Aunt May and Uncle Ben’s lessons in the back of HIS mind as well, he’s here to step in where Peter Parker failed. Can he accomplish things the original Spider-Man never could? These questions are what sold me on this story."

"When Zeb Wells started building this story it became apparent that it needed a narrative velocity and a team of the best of the best to make it happen. So we gathered some of the greatest writers and artists in comics to join us and the story got even better and bigger and more surprising."

Our first glimpse at these plans for Amazing Spider-Man will be revealed in the pages of Free Comic Book Day 2021: Spider-Man/Venom on August 14, and Marvel Comics has promised that they'll be announcing the title's new team of artists soon (one of them has to be John Romita Jr., surely?).

Fans of Ben's adventures are going to be really pleased with this news, but the majority will surely be wondering why Peter isn't around - perhaps his story will play out elsewhere in the Marvel Universe?

Don't tell me Peter 'dies' again....

I love me some Scarlet Spider though.

I say bring back Superior Spider-Man too. that was dope run with Doc Spidey

@Jaykay21 - It's better than killing of main Peter and having Miles replace him like the ultimate comics. If it's Ben, I'm okay with that.

@Kurban - I didn't mind that story as it felt like a true death of a character at the time. I really like what they tried to so with the most of the ultimate line...but tbat's just crashed and burnt in the end.

That off center spider really bugs me, no pun intended. Especially if the legs of the spider cover the rest of his torso, and even those have very strange placement.

Nice design, although id say is old spider-man suit was better.

Doubt any updates to the scarlet spider costume will ever stick, seems like they have tried a few times but it usually goes back to the hoodie and red spandex

Wow Beyond Corporation AND the Authority being things again amidst all this Warren Ellis stuff, crazy timing.

But man, do we really need a rehash of Ben Reilly takes over, especially when it’s only been one run since the guy that did Superior got off of Amazing? And THRICE monthly??? Jeez.

Jesus. WHY? Why can’t they just write stories about Peter, the only real spiderman?

Just nuke the entire universe (and all their writers) and start over. They’ve obviously run out of good ideas and are just desperately trying to some up with something different regardless of whether it’s good.
Let’s just rebuild the entire universe so they have a shot at building long-term stories from the ground up again. Not this reactionary, ‘what haven’t we tried’, back and forth bs.

People Historically talk about the characters comic book versions like through the “real” version. For me now, the MCU is the real Marvel universe. Their comics are shock jokey crap

@Spiderfan2226 - Yeah I've always said DC have it right with the whole "Universe reboot every 30 years" idea.

If your stories seemingly plod on forever with no real direction or possible conclusion, it cheapens everything. The ending of these stories are often what make them important.

@Spiderfan2226 - “Jesus. WHY? Why can’t they just write stories about Peter, the only real spiderman”

Well I think it’s about trying something different. Spider-Man has been out for 60 years and has never missed a month of not being published. 60 years worth of storytelling can get redundant after awhile. Imagine if someone wouldn’t have taken a chance on something new… then we wouldn’t have Venom, Miles Morales and countless other interpretations. Remember, Spider-Man was new at some point too bro.
Spiderfan2226
Spiderfan2226 - 6/27/2021, 7:07 AM
@Makiveli21 - I really don’t care anymore, hence why I want the whole universe rebooted. Nothing matters to me anymore in this continuity, probably because everyone has died and been resurrected so many times, everyone’s been every mantle it seems like. When you are left with these being the best or most creative ideas, you’ve run out of ideas. Start over
Spiderfan2226
Spiderfan2226 - 6/27/2021, 7:25 AM
@WruceBayne - it’s not about being new. Some new ideas are good, some are bad. You are conflating every new idea being the same thing. How is the mantle passing idea and the creation of venom and Spider-Man even remotely the same thing? I guess they are both ideas, but that’s about it.

Also, is making character x taking up the y mantle a new idea? They’ve been doing it for years, especially over the last decade or so.
Heck, if anything one of the things I don’t like about it is it’s not really new. It’s taking an old character and calling him by another old characters name.
I’m all for making new characters and ideas. This isn’t a new character or a new idea.
Spiderfan2226
Spiderfan2226 - 6/27/2021, 7:32 AM
@soberchimera -...what?

yes clearly movie studios don’t have faith in this Peter Parker character making them money since they have made 10 movies featuring Peter and 0 of any other live action versions of spiderman.

You think marvel is going to make a movie about a clone of Peter called Ben Reilly becoming Spider-Man?
Spiderfan2226
Spiderfan2226 - 6/27/2021, 8:37 AM
@SonOfAGif - I disagree (especially spider-Gwen) but I mind them less as alternate universe versions of Spider-Man like they started out as. Have they went back to that?
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 6/27/2021, 8:44 AM
@Spiderfan2226 - It seems like they are focusing on keeping Miles and Gwen part of Peter's earth in certain media.
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 6/27/2021, 11:33 AM
@Spiderfan2226 - ok, maybe I misunderstood you. Let me ask you this, what is it exactly that you’re looking for when it comes to something new from a Spider-Man story?
Spiderfan2226
Spiderfan2226 - 6/27/2021, 2:20 PM
@WruceBayne - I’m pretty open. Just a story that involves Spider-Man.
Obviously there can be good and bad stories that involve Peter even within that, and that just comes down to people being good writers and knowing what is or isn’t an interesting idea.

but that’s basically my only requirement.

I only care if the Beyond Corp being back means we get the return of Nextwave and more of the Breshear family.

But seriously, THIS is the new length they're going through to keep Peter from just being happily married?

SonOfAGif - 6/24/2021, 12:55 PM
People up in arms over a comic run that has zero ramifications to prior comic runs shows why companies don't try new things. Peter Parker will always be the OG Spider-Man. Stop crying over a damn comic run that won't ever top the original and you all know they will go back to Peter again.

Once Spencer's run ends I'll probably stop reading Amazing Spider-Man. With all its faults, I really enjoyed his run and it saddens me to see that it will end.
