Marvel Comics Announces New IRON FIST Series...But It Won't Be Danny Rand Wielding The Power Of K'un-Lun

This February, Marvel Comics is relaunching Iron Fist with award-winning writer Alyssa Wong (Doctor Aphra) and artist Michael YG. The five-issue limited series will see the legendary mantle of Iron Fist passed on to a new hero in what's described as a revolutionary transformation of one of Marvel’s most fascinating mystical mythologies.

The publisher promises that fans can expect an epic hero's journey in true Marvel fashion as this mysterious character unlocks long-hidden secrets behind the history of his ancient powers and confronts a threat that only he has the ability to defeat.

Danny Rand gave up his power to save the world earlier this year in Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon, but when demons begin to attack cities around the world, a new hero appears, hands blazing with the Chi of Shou-Lao the Undying. Who is this new Iron Fist, and does his power really come from the Dragon of K’un-Lun...or from something far more sinister?

"It’s an incredible honor to introduce a new Iron Fist to the Marvel Universe," Wong says. "I’m excited to delve into the comic’s rich mythos and build on it. What does it mean for someone to take up the mantle of the Iron Fist right now, today? As a newcomer, how does one interact with legacy, and how does one honor it while forging a new path?"

You have to wonder whether this Iron Fist will be of Asian descent; that's something fans have been crying out for, particularly when the character eventually returns to a live-action setting.

I feel like this might be the MCU iron fist

this would be a much easier design to translate to live action

@dracula - *Insert Thor Ragnarok meme• "Will it, though?"

The MCU already has an Asian martial arts master in Shang Chi. I think an Asian Iron Fist would come off as being redundant.

(Don't get me wrong, as someone of Asian descent, I'd LOVE to see more Asian superheroes...I'm just trying to be pragmatic here.)

hopefully they have some interesting plans for him and this isnt another case of marvel trying to avoid drama for political correctness. Creating more drama (Ancient One and Mandarin)

Next thing you know they avoid white savior drama and get stereotyping drama for doing 2 kung fu asian superheroes in the mcu

Makes a ton of sense that he would be Asian. Definitely like his look too

@dracula - I actually kinda like the hair, but I can also see why others don't like it

I wish they did more white eyed masks in the movies. Pretty petty issue, I know but it worked for deadpool. Would love to see Batman with glowing white eyes.

So he’s gonna be the MCU Iron Fist isn’t he

Ok, I would've said something about this being a new Asian character because "muh representation" and all that, but I think this is gonna be someone already established. If it were someone new who's Asian, they would've smothered the news with mentions of it. And even if they are choosing an existing Asian character to be iron fist (Shang chi maybe) then I'd have to give them props for at least not using the race as a selling point. I'm actually genuinely intrigued by this and want to check this out now.

Kudos marvel. You did something interesting in comics for a change.

...don't f@#$ it up though.

@Origame - I read the whole article expecting some ESG inclusivity/diversity mentions, and am surprised that they didn’t mention anything. I can respect that it’s about passing the mantle and respecting the legacy instead of virtue signaling to increase their ESG score

Love the suit.

The show did so much damage to Danny Rand the character, that I don’t think the general audience would think twice at accepting a new Iron Fist.
