SPOILERS: The Shocking Fates Of 'Batman' And 'The Joker' Revealed In Today's Issue #40

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman #40 went on sale today, and it wrapped up the shocking and epic "Endgame" storyline. How were things between the Caped Crusader and The Joker resolved? Well, it'll change the DC Universe in a major way, that's for sure. Hit the jump to find out...

Batman and The Joker are dead. It's revealed in today's Batman #40 that the latter isn't an immortal, and actually discovered the Dionysium which healed his face and made him stronger after he fell from that cliff in "Death of the Family". In a page which isn't shown below - to get the full story, you should really pick up a copy of this amazing comic book - Batman actually stops The Joker from reaching the pit of the mysterious fluid to heal himself, effectively resulting in the death of both him and his greatest enemy. Does this mean Batman technically killed The Joker?

There are a lot of great reveals in the issue anyway, including the fact that The Joker does indeed know that Batman and Bruce Wayne are one and the same. With the two enemies fatally wounded and buried deep underground, it's hard to say how Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo will bring either of them back! The former had this to say in an interview with Comic Book Resources earlier today however: "Batman knows that he is going to go down fighting. And that's the way that Batman will always end. He's not going to retire, at least our version of him. He's not going to ride off into the sunset. He's going to go down fighting for the city whether old or young. Giving him the chance to fight his greatest enemy, who represents everything that he stands against is the perfect ending for him. The Joker represents meaningless and the idea that everyone is laughing at him and you. Joker doesn't think that your life means anything whereas Batman says, "Stand up and make your life matter." Who wouldn't want to go down in a blaze of glory? If you're going to go down some way, what better way than saving the city and making sure that this monster never gets out of the box on your watch. It's almost a happy ending for Batman." Thoughts?

Ah, Batman's 2nd death and return. And we get yet another pretender Batman until he comes back. Jean Paul, Dick and now Gordon. Who's next. A villain next time? Another superhero?

It was definitely an interesting issue, but I'm still not sure how I feel about it. On one hand it's a good ending to "Endgame", on the other hand, I know both characters will be used again in the next year or two, which is fine but it cheapens the ending a bit. Still, I don't like Batman's use of the word "friend" when referring to the Joker.

They killed off Batman again. Lame. I loved Snyder's Batman but no amount of good writing to take away the lameness of killing off a beloved character like that. Hope they bring him back soon.

Yeah kinda with the rest of you on the whole character death thing. "Shocking character deaths" aren't that shocking in the modern context where we know that they are going to bring both characters back for no other reason than that they sell comics. Batman is the title that carries DC sales and it will not sell as well without the actual batman.

Again..sigh...

Comics sales must be just shit for every other quarter to just rehash a major death, then setup the return for 6-12 months later. This is just an extention of crossover mess of the 80s and 90s when every year there was a major event that required you to buy 800 comics a month (not really, but a sh*t ton)...

There is one batman, Bruce Wayne. They have tried the "take up the mantle of the bat" several times and it just doesnt work.. Grayson as batman was close, but thats becuase of the history and damian being part of the story. Felt natural.

Calling it now, its either going to be a Lazarus pit or a dream, also wasnt it revealed that joker is immortal?

PERFECT ISSUE!!!!

I know a particular flip flopping member kept criticizing Endgame because Joker was immortal...

BUT LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT THE JOKER, HE LIED AND WAS ALL A BIG PRANK!!!!

This is the only way Batman and Joker should die. Together. With Batman saving Gotham but dying thanks to the Joker and taking Joker with him.

Let's be honest, Batman isn't dead. We know he will come back.

This wasn't a gimmick like both MARVEL AND DC HAVE DONE WHEN IT COMES TO DEATH!!!!

This was well written, well planned, and nothing short of great. It's the best death in comics such Death of Ultimate Spider-Man which is still great IMO.

Perfect issue.

Wow.....I love that imagery of their blood forming a heart between Batman and Joker. Let's be honest, the two are like the Odd Couple and they're perfect for one another. As sick and as twisted it sounds, Joker is Batman's love interest. Whenever Batman actually dies and stays dead, so too must Joker, but Bats will be back. This just tells you since they're right next to a Lazarus Pit, haha.

Batman died next to a pool of Dionesium which gives off healing properties.

Of course he will eventually come back like all comic book deaths but it's still a great death.
