Daredevil Rights Question Answered

Daredevil Rights Question Answered

Our friends over at BigShinyRobot.com were spurred onto doing some research about whether or not the rights to Daredevil had reverted back to Marvel, and here's what they found.

The article that got them going on this was from CBM user "karapandza" (located HERE) --who deduced that the time had elapsed for Fox to pursue another movie with the property.

This from BSR...

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. Over at bigshinyrobot.com we picked up on your story that it may be possible that the Daredevil rights have reverted back to Marvel. We did a little research on the matter and it appears it's most likely not the case.

From our write-up:
". . . being that the source is Wikipedia, we did a little digging (and math!) with the help of our favorite movie critic, Jeff Vice (Jerk-bot). Jeff is pretty certain that the deal FOX signed for Daredevil was a 7 year deal, meaning, if the movie was released in 2003 the rights would have indeed reverted back to Marvel by now . . . BUT! (theres always a but) The Elektra movie, which was released in 05 and included a Matt Murdock cameo, is tied in with the Daredevil rights meaning that the contract is up at the end of 2012.

"So, it begs the question. To get a Daredevil film out before the end of next year, FOX would need to start moving pretty quickly on one, and there hasnt been much said about this franchise in the last few years, so are they going to allow the contract to lapse? In the meantime, the way we figure it here at BSR!, it appears the rights do still belong to FOX, but may be expiring next year, and thats when the rights would revert back to Marvel.

"Barring any unreleased news that FOX has relenquished the rights ahead of schedule, it appears the rights remain at 20th Century Fox for the time being."

Just wanted to share the info! Keep up the good work!

Good sleuthing guys! Kudos to you for figuring this out for the fans.

only marvel studios can produce the "daredevil" film that we all want to see.

marvel have the rights back for "the punisher" why not do a crossover movie with "daredevil".

One year left... hope they revert back to Marvel! That character has so much more potential and is so interesting.

[frick]ing FOX is prolly no more interested on this, Well at least I hope they are not. With First Class being released this year, Wolverine 2 next year and prolly their FF reboot, I dont think they will have time to produce a new DD movie.

Nice find but I'd be happy if this character was lost all together. I know he is a fan favorite because we all grew up with him but he is a cheesy character and more like superhero shtick to me.

well fox rushed x-men: first class, but x-men is a bigger franchise so maybe they'll forget about it and the rights will go back to marvel smoothly.

I don't get it, do they have to release a movie by the end of 2012 or is it that they have to start production by the end of 2012.

If you guys remember Sony was about to lose the rights to Ghost Rider (Jan 1 2011) if they didn't start producing on a movie by then, they started filming on Oct 2010 and they kept the rights.

I so wish Marvel could back all their characters from Fox and Sony. Then us comic geeks could have a big happy all inclusive universe. Just imagine what could become of this, Secret Wars, Marvel Team-up, Infinity Gauntlet, Planet Hulk (movie), A good X-Men movie (where every new movie does not contradict the previous), No stupid reboots, and a Marvel Zombies movie, nerdgasm all the way!!

I have never liked daredevil but anytime that marvel can recover its property from fox its a good thing. Fox is putting out these sh*tty movies and it sucks because I think marvel studios could do a much better job with these characters.

WhiteDragon66 - 1/26/2011, 2:27 PM
Marvels big mistake was leasing out these characters to thst shitbag studio in the 1st place although they nailed Silver Surfer (to a certain extent) they ruined Galactus aaaand Doom. Tim Story who directed the movie said that a huge guy in a purple suit attacking NY would look stupid (fuggin jerk) all they had to do was tweak his look but makin him a SPACE FART was a slap in the face to all us fans FOX should never be let near a marvel property ever again nuff said

I liked the Daredevil movie.Thats a bunch of bullsh*t that his cameo in Elektra counts. It wasn't a full Daredevil movie,so how can they count that? What a crock of sh*t.Marvel needs to get this back, maybe if everybody keeps quiet about it,Fox will forget and won't try to put out some straight to DVD bullsh*t stunt.I could see them doing that since they are a bunch dickfaces.

If/when they do get the rights back, it still may be a while before they use him.Like they said a few months ago, they can only really focus on producing two feature films a year.

They already have several franchises going including Iron Man, Avengers, Thor and Captain America. They are also attempting to make movies for Ant Man, Black Panther, Dr.Strange, Iron Fist and Runaways. There's also the proposed solo films for Hawkeye and Black Widow.

Their extensive development schedule was actually the reason they gave a while ago as to why they weren't adamantly attempting to reclaim those properties. While it would be nice to have them back, they really wouldn't be able to do anything with them for a long time.

Oh my God, this has got me incredibly excited. I hope that Marvel have got the rights back already, or will have in the next year. If there's one character that could do with the Marvel Studios treatment, it's Daredevil!

Unfortunately if FOX wanted they coulkd get something together for release late 2012. I hope they don't. With DD rights back it would be perfect to set up a Marvel Knights movie Avengers's style. Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Punisher, Moon Kinght, Black Panther and so forth.

IMO DD could potentially be the Best CBM franchise ever and if handled correctly(whether in or out of the Shared Marvel Universe) could rival the Nolan Batman series.

FoxForce5 - 1/26/2011, 3:09 PM
The fact is, either Marvel seems to have signed a lot of bad deals (out of desperation) or we're still not gettin a lot of the details (which is very possible). A lot of these type of contract should also contain an experation/renegotiation clause, regaurdless of what get's made. So, at some point, any company (i.e. Fox) should still have to renegotiate or loose the film rights unless it was an oversight at the time by Marvel's. But hopefully, all rights will eventually revert & hopefully that's what's going on with the X-franchise, hence the push to get out all the X-crap they can at moment.
