Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has started his job as the co-CEO of DC Studios, and he took the time this weekend to address fans.
Both #ReleaseTheAyerCut and #SaveLegendsOfTomorrow have trended worldwide over the past couple of days, with supporters of both movements making their feelings known. The latter hashtag obviously refers to The CW's Legends of Tomorrow, which was cancelled earlier this year, while the former was shared by those hoping to see David Ayer's director's cut of 2016's Suicide Squad.
Letting fans know that both he and fellow co-CEO Peter Safran have taken note of these requests, Gunn also made it clear that they're focused on the DCU's future.
"[All] our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects," the filmmaker teased, concluding by saying, "We can’t wait to reveal more."
Reading through Gunn's Tweets, it's clear that there are currently no plans to release a slightly different version of a movie that came out over six years ago or to resurrect a cancelled TV series which was declining rapidly in viewership before the plug was pulled (with The CW moving on from the Arrowverse, it's hard to say where the show could even go).
However, he and Safran are clearly plotting a massive, overarching story that looks set to play out on big and small screens over the next few years, and that's very exciting. Could this be Crisis on Infinite Earths, a storyline we know Walter Hamada was looking to build towards before the Warner Bros./Discovery merger?
It's possible, but the biggest takeaway here is that there's finally a plan in place for the DCU. We may see some of those Task Force X or Legends characters factor into that, but for now, Gunn and Safran are busy planning "the Biggest Story Ever Told" over at DC Studios...
