DEADPOOL Director And Writers Reveal Why They Cut Three Comic Book Villains From The Script

It was thought Fox's decision to slash Deadpool's budget is why these three baddies were cut, but we now have details on the creative reasons behind that and news on whether we'll see them down the line...

Deadpool was originally supposed to feature appearances from Garrison Kane, Sluggo, and Wire, but those three were dropped from the script when Fox actually started actively developing the movie. Promoting the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of the movie, director Tim Miller and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick spoke to IGN about the decision to remove those three and whether there's a chance we could see them turn up in the sequel. "They were Ajax’s sidekicks – they’re all good characters," Miller explains. "[Deadpool creator] Rob Liefield is still crying because Garrison Kane’s not in the movie, and Wire had one of the single best jokes in the script ever; his death was pretty epic. But I felt like, honestly – and this is not pandering – I wanted some more women in the movie. And so I wanted to replace them with a female superhero, or supervillain in Gina [Carano]'s case."

Wernick however was a little more upfront about the decision to remove the trio from Deadpool, citing bugetary reasons for why they were ultimately replaced by a completely different character. "They were Ajax’s muscle and we ultimately for budget reasons consolidated those three characters into the Angel Dust character. And I think a lot had to do with there’s some CG elements to those characters." Reese meanwhile added: "Garrison Kane has a bionic arm for instance, and that was going to be expensive. Wire shoots wires out of his extremities. We had a really cool scene where he was fighting Deadpool and Deadpool was cutting through the wires with his swords, but all expensive and all CG, and when it came time to make the movie we just had to make some hard, hard decisions." That sounds like it would have been a pretty awesome sequence, and with Fox no doubt more than happy to up what Miller and company can spend next time around after that $750+ million haul, could we see Kane and company show up in the sequel?

"Maybe, maybe, they were fun, and their abilities were cool," Reese teased. "Sluggo is just a strongman so maybe a little less so with him, but Wire was really interesting and fun to watch onscreen, at least in our heads." What do you guys think? Let us know your thoughts below.

That's OK, they can save the big stuff for the sequel!

@MattBellissimo - I sort of hope they don't try to outdo themselves too much. This franchise seems like one of those less-is-more scenarios.

@Magus - Everything I've read from Reese and Wernick indicates they won't be....they've said numerous times the budget helped add to the special feeling of the first film, and they don't necessarily NEED bigger budget to make a better sequel!

@MattBellissimo - I love that they acknowledged that concern as one of the first things they were thinking about. It can still be bigger, but not TOO big. The movie only cost sixty million. If they're going to add Cable, which they confirmed, and possibly introduce Garrison Kane, they could pull that off with maybe an eighty million budget. Bigger, but not so big that it changes the style and heart that made the first one what it was.

The movie was so good because they realized it wouldn't be a huge money maker(but it was) but they didn't care. They cared about the charcter and it paid off big time. When ppl make cbms for the money it rarely turns out any good. Case in point BvS

@CaptainAmerica31 -

At the end of the day, all CBMs are being made for money. Just like everything else.

There once was a director Tim Miller
Whose movie starred a mad killer
But since the hero was funny
His movie made much more money
Than the usual humorless thriller.

They honestly should have cut out Colossus, he's fully CGI all the time and to be honest he didnt really add much to the film other than two jokes with Deadpool and a bit of a fight scene.

Either way, add 'Wire' to the sequel as the main villain.

@Scarilian - Some of my favorite scenes in the film are between Colossus and Deadpool. Take him out and I like the film a lot less.

@Scarilian - They needed a "straight-man" to play off of Deadpools... insanity. It was played off perfectly. Plus he was a perfect Colossus.

It's always good when movies have a limited budget as long as they also have a good director. It keeps things from getting out of hand AKA "Creativity Overload".

I read that leaked script and was really let down that Garrison was cut out. He had some really great scenes in there.

They should go [frick]ing nuts and totally break the fourth wall by having Deadpool accept a hit mission on the stupid executives who ruined him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and gave us Barakpool.

I don't like all this talk of the sequel having a similar budget.

That movie made $800 million! Jesus, give the guys at least $100 million. That's still low for a superhero film. They can still feel all constrained and sh*t.
