Deadline is reporting that Walt Disney Studios has enlisted Michael Matthews (Love and MonstersFive Fingers for Marseilles) to direct Merlin, an upcoming live-action adaptation of T.A. Barron's The Merlin Saga novel series.

It's still very early in the development process, but the film will presumably adapt the first book in the series, The Lost Years. The overall story follows a young Merlin and focuses on the never-before-told tale of his youth as he goes through all kinds of trials and tribulations to become the legendary wizard of King Arthur lore.

Academy Award-nominee Chris Weitz (Rogue One: A Star Wars StoryAbout a Boy) penned the script, while 2x Academy Award-nominee Gil Netter (Life of PiThe Blind Side) is producing.

Ridley Scott (The Last Duel; House of Gucci) was previously attached, but exited the project recently due to his increasingly busy schedule. He's next set to tackle the Napoleon Bonaparte biopic Kitbag starring Joaquin Phoenix (JokerGladiator) and Jodie Comer (Killing Eve; Free Guy), which he'll follow with his long-awaited Gladiator sequel.

The Merlin Saga consists of twelve books - The Lost Years, The Seven Songs, The Raging Fires, The Mirror of Fate, A Wizard's Wings, The Dragon of Avalon, Doomraga's Revenge, Ultimate Magic, The Great Tree of Avalon, Shadows on the Stars, The Eternal Flame, and Merlin: The Book of Magic - so it's not a stretch to assume that Disney might have their sights set on a new franchise. However, whether they plan to debut this film in theaters or on Disney+ remains to be seen.

Wait, Ridley Scott is actually doing a Gladiator sequel? I remember them toying with the idea of resurrecting Maximus and having him aid soldiers throughout various historical conflicts but that sounded so weird and unnecessary.

@MovieMonster - Nick Cave wrote a script for a Gladiator sequel back in the day, and it sure was... something.

“So, he goes down to purgatory and is sent down by the gods, who are dying in heaven because there’s this one god, there’s this Christ character, down on Earth who is gaining popularity and so the many gods are dying so they send Gladiator back to kill Christ and his followers. I wanted to call it Christ Killer and in the end, you find out that the main guy was his son so he has to kill his son and he was tricked by the gods. He becomes this eternal warrior and it ends with this 20-minute war scene which follows all the wars in history, right up to Vietnam and all that sort of stuff and it was wild. It was a stone-cold masterpiece.”

Crowe reacted: “Don’t like it mate,” to Cave’s dismay.

Really like Love & Monsters, so this is good news.

And also, Merlin and the King Arthur saga make for a solid franchise basis, so I'm surprised a studio is pnly doing it now
