Disney+ Will Offer A Cheaper Version Of The Streaming Service Later This Year...With Adverts

Disney+ has confirmed long-standing rumours that a cheaper version of the streaming service is coming, though you'll have to put up with commercials and advertising on the platform. Read on for details!

It's been confirmed today that Disney+ is set to introduce an ad-supported subscription in addition to its ad-free option, beginning in the U.S. in late 2022, with plans to expand internationally in 2023. There have been rumours that this might happen, and while some will be horrified at the prospect of an episode of Loki being interrupted by commercials, this will be a cheaper option for subscribers.

"Expanding access to Disney+ to a broader audience at a lower price point is a win for everyone - consumers, advertisers, and our storytellers," Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, said in a statement today. "More consumers will be able to access our amazing content. Advertisers will be able to reach a wider audience, and our storytellers will be able to share their incredible work with more fans and families."

It's worth noting this is nothing new for Disney as Hulu and ESPN+ currently offer cheaper subscription options that include commercials. Extending this format to Disney+ will increase subscription numbers and revenue made from the platform, which will no doubt lead to even more content.

"Since its launch, advertisers have been clamoring for the opportunity to be part of Disney+ and not just because there’s a growing demand for more streaming inventory," says Rita Ferro, President, Advertising, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. "Disney+ with advertising will offer marketers the most premium environment in streaming with our most beloved brands, Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel and National Geographic."

A press release notes that this "ad-supported offering" is a key component in Disney's plan to achieve 230 - 260 million Disney+ subscribers by 2024. More details, including launch date and pricing, will be announced at a later date, so we'll be sure to keep you guys updated as we learn more.

Would you take out a subscription to a Disney+ featuring adverts?

Hopefully there’s a glitch and the commercials eat into the middle of like all the best scenes “why is Fake Cap standing over they bloody dead guy? Oh I do hope he apprehends whoever’s responsible!”

Won't be long now before there's a bundle for HBO Max, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, and we'll have cycled back to complaining about there only being three streaming services and there was nothing to watch and we had to manually pick which shows we wanted to watch instead of it being automated, up hill both ways in the snow during the war.

And only like 60% of that is even a joke.

@Reeds2Much - yeah I realized about 2-3 years ago we’ve just cycled back to cable (including the price too when you have a bunch of streaming services) except it runs through the Internet now

What that actually means is:
Soon we'll increase the prices and the current price will become a subscription filled with ads. This way it seems like there is an option for a subscription with a lower price but really no... We are just gonna increase our prices and don't want any backlash!

Probably going to be what we pay now while the rest of us who have the ad-free version will face the price increase.

Makes sense. Kinda even expect the other services to do so too eventually. And bet we'll eventually see it a similar system to cable tv, where we can switch between services (instead of channels) we chose to add through our telecom providers

Whatever they do i hope they don't adopt some of the bat$hit crazy practices i have been experiencing on youtube recently... like a commercial every 30 seconds in some cases if you skip through content like i do.

In India there's a free version of Disney+ that you can watch with ads. You don't have to pay anything.
