This past weekend's box office takings proved to be very mediocre for Disney and their previously infallible remake formula. Dumbo, the first of their packed 2019 live-action slate, did not pull in audiences nearly as well as the studio had hoped. And even then, their expectations for the $170 million blockbuster were already low.
With a projected $50-$60 million start reported over the week of its release, Disney was already bracing for a modest opening weekend. While the $45 million result is nothing to scoff at for the average theatrical film, the production of the remake proved to be quite expensive, costing $170 million. As a comparison, the budget for the Tim Burton flick eclipsed that of Captain Marvel, which came in at $150.
This middling result for Dumbo means the movie will rely purely on overseas returns and strong legs going forward, even though the general reaction so far has been mixed.
