MOANA 2: New Report Reveals How Disney Sequel Went From A Streaming TV Series To Theatrical Release

We recently learned that the Moana sequel has gone from being a Disney+ TV series to a full-blown theatrical movie, but how and why did Disney make such a sweeping change to the project? Check it out...

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently announced plans for a new Moana movie which will arrive in theaters this Thanksgiving (less than a year after we first learned of its existence). While the news generated excitement among Disney Animation fans, it's left a lot of people scratching their heads too.

It was way back in 2020 that a Moana Disney+ TV series was announced, with the idea being for it to serve as a loose follow-up in the same way as the streamer's Big Hero 6, Zootopia, and Cars sequels. So, what changed?

According to The Wrap (via Toonado.com), this is all part of Disney's strategy to increase revenue after the impact COVID and ousted CEO Bob Chapek had on the studio's bottom line. During his tenure, a seemingly endless stream of pricey content was developed for Disney+ to boost subscribers and many movies, primarily those from Pixar, skipped theaters completely.

The trade reveals that Moana 2's evolution was set in motion just a few months ago when Disney executives sat down to watch near-finished episodes of the series. Writer and director David G. Derrick Jr. must have exceeded expectations because the decision was then made to combine the episodes into a single big screen tale.

The studio is said to have "wrestled" with the concept, keeping that Thanksgiving 2024 slot free just in case one of its other movies - Zootopia 2, for example - could fill it.

Part of the reason for this unexpected change is the revenue Disney can create beyond just ticket sales; by returning to tried and tested franchises, the hope is it will increase interest in new theme park attractions and ultimately lead to a rise in merchandise sales (which will inevitably be higher for a movie than a TV series which drops on Disney+ on a random Wednesday).

It's going to be very interesting to see whether this strategy pans out; we find it hard to believe the small screen version was going to enlist Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for more than a cameo given how expensive his time is, but that will have likely changed now Moana 2 is a movie. Surely that's resulted in sweeping changes to the story and a need to create new scenes in a rush?

Walt Disney Animation Studios' epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa'i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina (Lin-Manuel Miranda won't be returning), Moana 2 opens in theaters on November. 27, 2024.

I can sum it up with two points:

1) disney+ is losing money

2) no one understands why a not even 10 year old movie is getting a live action remake.

On that note, it's so weird we actually have a trailer for Moana 2 yet the remake has nothing.

@Origame - same with blade and fantastic four I’m glad it’s animated not live action few animated Disney movies that should get sequels others should not

It’s funny how the best solution for everything and everyone rn is basically to do things less internet based

The writing's on the wall for Disney. Instead of fixing the creative process and in some cases the writing and director, or special effects mostly, they'll just make more sequels. Lol

@bobevanz - That's what Iger said, more franchises. Just focus on quality and good movies/shows.

We've seen it a lot with the gaming industry lately, the games that are quality and fun are the ones killing it. BG3 and Helldivers are successful because they are a blast. Games like Suicide Squad couldn't even pass the top player count of Arkham Knights

"after the impact COVID and ousted CEO Bob Chapek had on the studio's bottom line."

Yes that's all of it. Sure.

@Oberlin4Prez - It *definitely* wasn't paying $71 billion for Fox immediately before everyone was forced to not go to movies, theme parks, cruise ships, sporting events... I'm sure not having made an X-Men or Fantastic Four movie five years after the deal (as opposed to two years between announcing the Sony agreement and Homecoming) also didn't play even a tiny bit of a factor.

@EarlChai - and it's definitely not the studio deciding to mismanage funds abroad, sitting insane expectations for even an animated movie to be able to make a prophet. And it's most certainly not the same studio making the kinds of creative decisions that alienate their core customer base (I.e. families) from wanting to even invest in the stories they're trying to tell.

I’d be more interested in an animated Moana 2 over a live action remake.

@mountainman - Agree, in concept. But I definitely have some misgivings about them repurposing a D+ show into a movie in such short order.

@mountainman - theyre doing both, which is a dumbass idea. give me the animated sequel anyday over live action bullshit theyve been pumping out

@MotherGooseUPus - I’m not the highest fan of Moana, but it’s one of the better new properties from Disney in recent years. I feel like it’ll be on par with Frozen 2, that lost a lot of the originality and charm of the first. These movies aren’t made for me, but I do have a daughter who would be in the target demo in a few years and I can choose what to spend my money on for her to see.

@mountainman - sad to say as a late 30s something male with no kids, yet, that im a big animated kind of guy. i havent seen an animated movie in theaters since How to Train Your Dragon 3, but, that doesnt mean that i dont still put them on when they come to Netlfix, Amazon Prime or Disney+

but yea, this won't be as good as the first and the live action is a mistake, imo

@MotherGooseUPus - I do still enjoy a quality animated movie. The first Moana was one of the better Disney movies in recent years. My wife and I recently rewatched the show to Train Your Dragon Trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Loved Mario Bros last year. A lot of these can be enjoyable for people of any age. That is, if they are good.

The live actions have largely been soulless cash grabs.

MotherGooseUPus - 2/23/2024, 2:27 PM
@mountainman - agreed my man. i actually just saw Mario Bros and really liked it wayyyy more than i thought i ever would. The story was legit and i loved how they brought the N64 games of my childhood to life.

YESSSS, the live action are BAD. The cartoon/animated are soooo much better.... but hey... Disney guna Disney and they arent "making enough money" every year (thats sarcasm)
FASELI
FASELI - 2/24/2024, 2:43 AM
@ptick - Depends on the quality of the show. The Tangled sequel show is of a really high quality, with an interconnected narrative over 20+ episodes. So if it's anything like that it shouldn't be impossible.
ptick
ptick - 2/27/2024, 12:13 PM
@FASELI - Oh I have no doubt that the show could have been high quality. It's the repurposing of it into a movie in a relatively short period of time that has me concerned. It could work out great, but it could also feel very choppy.

I think it's pretty obvious they saw an opportunity - the last Disney/Originals have, for a myriad of reasons, not been the expected hit that they were expecting. They bet on new stuff but this particular bet didn't work. So, in a need to have a hit for Thanksgiving weekend, they simply decided it would be better to at least have a sequel to a brand that worked well than something new that could flop.

Disney+ is changing their subscription policies again and losing subscribers, hand over fist. A Moana series would do nothing to save or change that. They're just hoping to recoup production costs by putting it in theaters. It changes the type of marketing, but not the cost. It's a roll of the dice with not much downside.

Much rather have this sequel rather than the live-action remake film they are dropping next year.

I was interested in this film until I heard John Musket and Ron Clements weren’t returning and then I heard it is a bunch of TV episodes being cobbled together into a film. Prediction: this is going to suck and won’t hold a candle to the original.

Honestly let me just say right off the bat I am very excited for the new Moana 2 it seems very interesting on where the movie left off at , and before anybody says " the movie was finished what more can you add " there is still plenty to add and more that can come and change to the movie I mean y'all still watch Netflix series and movies and let's not get started on super hero movies they come out with like 7 different movies for them and y'all still watch it . The point is if y'all grown adults don't like that Disney is coming out with a new movie then respectfully don't watch it was never meant for you anyways, we get it Disney changed there subscription okay? then get rid of it I just don't understand why you all complain about the dumbest shit it's simple get rid of the Disney app and stop complaining about the movies there coming out with and grow the [frick] up the movies they make were never for you anyways. Other than that the movie looks fire
