Disney has delayed the release of
Mulan until an unknown date later in 2020, and director Niki Caro has issued a statement to offer sympathy to those battling the coronavirus and to promise fans an experience worth waiting for once the film does finally arrive in theaters.
It initially appeared that Mulan would be released as planned, even after it was indefinitely delayed in China, a country which has gone into total lockdown thanks to this pandemic.
Black Widow (May 1st) and
Artemis Fowl (May 29th) are still scheduled for release in May.
While there has been some speculation that films like these could be released on Disney+, their huge budgets mean that is highly doubtful, and Disney has even released a statement pointing out they believe in "the moviegoing experience." That seems to rule out any sort of non-theatrical release for titles like
Mulan and
Black Widow.
With the global box office expected to lose upwards of $10 billion this year, it feels like a lose/lose situation for film studios, so delaying them could be the only realistic option for now.
