PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 6 Reportedly Still Moving Forward With Director Joachim Rønning Returning To The Helm

The PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise is set to return. But with a post James Gunn no tolerance policy taking hold at Disney, can Johnny Depp be expected to return?

After scoring a $200 million decline from On Stranger Tides to Dead Men Tell No Tales, the result on paper may have been worrisome for many studios. But surprisingly, Pirates has only gotten more popular in some overseas markets, with a profitable $800 million overall backed by a $250 million budget. With its domestic appeal waning, Disney has took its time with the next installment of the franchise, with many wondering if it would happen at all. Though recent events within the mouse house may make Depp's return uncertain, Pirates fans may be thankful to hear that the franchise is currently moving forward.

According to Omega Underground, who has been spot on as of late, Joachim Rønning, co-director of the latest installment, will take the reigns once again for Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Ted Elliot, Terry Rossio, and Jeff Nathanson, all of which are franchise veterans, are currently at work on the screenplay. Due to Rønning's involvement in Maleficent 2, don't expect the Pirates sequel to be coming soon. At the earliest the film may hit theaters 2021, four years after its predecessor.

Following the controversy surrounding Johnny Depp and Fantastic Beasts, there is no doubt that Disney has itself in a tough spot, especially with the James Gunn situation looming over Hollywood. To be fair, the character of Jack Sparrow has only become less interesting, being labeled as unnecessary comedic relief by those more interested in the Turner-Swann dynamic. Untimately, only time will tell if the Pirates franchise will move forward without him.

These have kinda gone down hill over the years. I really liked the first 3, but this new trilogy so far have kinda been just going through the motions in my mind.

@noahthegrand - The new trilogy just started actually, with the last one. The fourth film isn't part of it, that one was standalone.

@noahthegrand - Yeah the first 2 were great, 3rd was good, 4th was boring crap, 5th was better than 4th but still bad, and just a retread of the first. Also the false advertising they used, when Orlando Bloom was barely in the movie, and Keira Knightley didnt show up until the final seconds and had no dialogue. Might as well have left them out of the trailers, but they knew people would want to see it if they came back

Maybe the loss of will and Elizabeth are why I don’t like the new ones, maybe it’s Johnny Depp being far too much of a main character, I don’t know

@noahthegrand - yeah Jack only work as the third wheel to Will and Liz I love the original trilogy but everything after has just been boring

It became pretty obvious in the fifth film that the focus has now shifted to the Turner family. Just make Will the new lead and call it a day.

i kind of liked the 4th one with the mermaid and the quest for the fountain of youth. Penelope cruizes character was ladylike and graceful, vastly more compelling than keira knightleys annoying antics. Her loyalty to her scoundrel father was good, but they should have played up the conflict more. The 5th one was totally erratic and braindead, ive had enough of terry rosio and ted elliot. The stupid hijinks of sparrow have outstayed their welcome. They need to make him clever and swashbuckling again like the first one, instead of a bungling jackass. if the next one is as bad as the last i wouldnt be surprised if this franchise finally dies. People are growing accustomed to pretty good entertainment due to marvel studios, and arent putting up with inferior storytelling any more.

No. Last one had a cool villain concept but it was awful. Everyone was bland and Johnny just looked old.

These movies lost all the magic after 3.

I want the 6th Pirates movie to be an massive improvement over the last 4 movies. The first one is the best one so far. It got its characters right, had a great plot and had good pacing out of all the Pirates movies. So I'm hoping the 6th movie will get an 60-80% tomato meter at the box office.

Javier Bardem would’ve been the only reason for me to see the last one but even then I feel these movies have stagnated. Depp isn’t a draw card for movies nowadays...not for me at least.

@ChangAlang - I remember a time where Johnny Depp alone was enough for me to get excited about a movie.

I think Alice in wonderland killed that.

If he doesn't like the "o", why doesn't he just change his name to Rnning?

@Spock0Clock - ø is a vowel originating mainly in Scandinavia. Joachim Rønning is Norwegian.

Consider yourself educated. You're welcome.

Huh i'm not surprised it did well overseas, at least here in my country people LOVE the Pirates movies, when i went to watch the last one i thought it was only gonna be my friends and i with a few other people, but damn the place was packed and everybody was enjoying the movie, having a great time.

I personally enjoyed Pirates 5, much better than #4 imo. It felt like an actual continuation of the story they started which was all i wanted from it, i liked how they moved on the story. I'm up for a sixth one, i love Davy Jones and his mythos they better not leave that last scene as a mere tease, give me Davy Jones, give me some cruel hard ass, tragic Davy Jones controling aquatic monsters, giving hell to the Turner's and Sparrow.

Or at least i hope they come up with something interesting with him.

Why are they still milking this franchise? The last movie was basically a made-for-TV script with the criminally undeserved special fx budget of a blockbuster.

Having just finished Black Sails, I can honestly say that I feel like the final word has been said on the genre. What an amazing ride, with an eye on deeper themes that really make you rethink your assumptions about the Golden Age of Piracy. It accomplished what all the best genre stories do: gradually leading the audience through the tropes of the genre until the stereotypes feel organic and natural, as opposed to the cliches they seem at first glance.

I honestly wasn't expecting a series about the philosophical struggle of empire, freedom, and barbarism, steeped in moral grays that actually made me care about the fate of some buried treasure well beyond a plot point.

...Anyway, I haven't watched a Pirates movie since the second one (and I fell asleep watching the first one in the theater, only time that's ever happened to me). But it feels like it's the complete opposite of Black Sails. All flash and sizzle theme-park pirates... but still feeling the high of Black Sails, I might give them another go anyway...

@Spock0Clock - the first three I like, it’s a real complete story, , 4th and fifth.... well, .... actually, not sure what to say about them I’ll just leave it at they aren’t good.

Less is more. Need to have more character moments and less CGI swinging around and explosion. More mystery like the first one please.

These movies are great escapism. Usually good soundtracks and great action. I’ll see them as long as they keep making them. Have turner and his son get into some mischief together.

Have Sparrow have something to do with the treasure at Oak Island. I love the idea of Peter Dinklage in a Pirates movie, good call there InfiniteMonkey. (I hate that monkey)

They need a better villain, I loved the last film, but it seems they are running out of ideas. I will see the new one if it looks good, and I always love the score. More Pirate lore please.

What about Nicolas Cage as a pirate villain?

Imo, everything besides the first movie is dog shit.

And the first movie was [frick]ing Golden.

This is the franchise that dropped the ball the hardest. That mother[frick]er fell through the court floor. It will make it to China someday, I assure you.
