DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Producer Teases WHAT IF...? Connection In Upcoming Sequel

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness producer Richie Palmer has said the film deals with Stephen Strange "reckoning with himself" and teases the sequel's connection to What If...?'s Strange Supreme.

What If...? introduced a Doctor Strange Variant who was so desperate to save Christine Palmer is his reality that he eventually doomed his entire universe. The trailers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have suggested we'll now see that Sorcerer Supreme in live-action, and producer Richie Palmer commented on the possibilty during a recent interview with D23 (via The Direct).

Initially explaining that "after all the decisions he's made over the years, this movie really shows Stephen reckoning with himself," Palmer appeared to confirm that it is indeed What If...?'s Strange Supreme.

"Things get pretty trippy. We love that episode of What If...?, and we hope to do it justice," he teased. "It shows another version of Doctor Strange - one who let the universe he lived in be destroyed because of his love for Christine. If he was capable of that, for a selfish reason, is that something that our Stephen would be capable of doing, too?"

"We'd like to think, 'No, our guy's the hero,' but you never know," Palmer concluded.

Seeing as the sinister-looking Strange in the trailers for Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange sequel has repeated lines said by the What If...? Variant, we can't help but believe they're one and the same. After he joined the Guardians of the Multiverse to defeat Infinity Ultron, we're not sure what leads to him being part of that exchange between the MCU's Stephen Strange and Master Mordo.

However, if the latter is looking to show Strange just how dangerous he has the potential to be, then it's feasible he conjures the Variant up to explain how the "hero" obliterated an entire universe. That would be a fun way to pay homage to What If...? and establish the animated series as an important part of the wider MCU mythos in the process.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released in theaters on May 6.

I guess Christine won't be dying in this one, but I could see her marrying some other guy bring out something in Strange. Doubt it's What If Strange, but the evil Strange in this one might be the version the went on to do whatever MCU Strange wanted to do after Christine's wedding

@bkmeijer - maybe only the Christine in Evil stranges reality dies, which makes him go crazy. Hopes its not her marrying someone what triggers him, that would be a bit lame

@RokoVII - yeah that wpuld be indeed. Maybe it sets off a whole chain of events though. Feel like it has some importance as they put it in the trailer

I don't know how they did it, but I'm finding myself really invested in Doctor Strange now. I ranked his first movie pretty low and found his crossover appearances a little irritating.

But that What If episode and seeing him with Wanda (someone who carries a similar burden of personal tragedy that caused them both to retreat from the world), it's feeling very weighty in a way that's drawing me in.

The cameos are cool and fine, but this movie might be something special for the character.

@Spock0Clock - Ah, I loved the 1st. One of the best MCU origin stories IMO. Totally character-changing.

@Spock0Clock - I find myself feeling the same way (didn't like him in the MCU until after Endgame). I think it is due to a couple/three things:

1) He's one of the only pre_Endgame Avengers left unscathed, or at least without major irrevocable changes to their status quo.
2) Some of the highest level of emotion in his (or variant's) story. That What If episode was one of my favorites but also one of the most tragic.
3) The Strange plotline lives in between/within all the other plotlines. Whether Strange shows up somewhere among the Earth-only heroes or he shows up in a magic/multiverse-level event, not out of place and acceptable.

random audience member: "well, since What If? is more of an animated experiment than a proper MCU entry maybe I can skip it"

Kevin Feige: "ohh no, you ain't skipping sh*t"

That doesn’t really confirm it’s the what if strange unless I’m misreading the quote. But whatever don’t care that much

How many Strange’s are in this? Evil, Defender, Zombie, Supreme and ours?

@Frshcoupe - where was Supreme in the trailer?

@Frshcoupe - I think there will be three. Main Strange, evil Strange (not the one from What If), and Defender Strange that later turns into zombie Strange

@RokoVII - isn’t he the one that says “things just got out of hand”?

I still think that most of the Strange we see in the trailer isn't our Strange from the main MCU. Something seems off with him, especially him waking up in the bed. I don't know why, but since the trailer first released I've felt like this. Also feel like zombie strange will basically be a cameo when they're hopping through universes. Quick fight, they escape and he's not seen again.

Zombie Strange is the Defender one's body, revived by the MCU Strange in the final battle.
