DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS: [Spoiler] Comments On Their Cameo Appearance

A certain actor has finally weighed in on their much-discussed cameo appearance in Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness... in typically hilarious fashion!

By MarkCassidy - May 06, 2022 09:05 AM EST

As you'll no doubt be aware by now, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness features quite a few cameos, but one, in particular, is sure to bring a smile to old-school Sam Raimi fans.

Bruce Campbell has appeared in the majority of Raimi's films since his screen debut in Evil Dead, so it probably won't come as much of a surprise to learn that he also shows up in the Doctor Strange sequel. The specific details of his role have led to a lot of speculation, though, and he was rumored to be playing a member of The Illuminati (Thor's brother Balder) at one point.

There's a pretty good chance this was the original plan, but Campbell actually ended up playing a food vender named "Pizza Poppa" who accosts Strange and Chavez on the street when they arrive in The Illuminati's reality.

After Poppa threatens to squirt mustard on him, Strange casts a spell which forces the vender to repeatedly punch himself in the face (bit harsh). He then returns in the movie's post-credits scene when the spell finally wears off, looking straight at the camera to tell the audience that "it's over!"

A fan revealed the details of Campbell's appearances on Twitter, and the actor responded with the following:

Some might be disappointed with Campbell's cameos, but we're sure Raimi will find a more substantial part for his old friend one of these days!

@AmazingFILMporg - It was very Army of Darkness. If you're not into Raimis three stooges type humour, that's totally fair, it's definitely not for everyone

Would have preferred him to be a more relevant character, like Ash (that obviously isn't named Ash) murdering zombies in the Marvel Zombies reality.

I was kinda hoping Bruce would show up playing a wacky, schlubby variant of another major MCU character (still kinda mad about Mysterio). But his cameo was fun, and he got to chew the scenery.

I really don't get the issue people have with this cameo. This is definitely in line with the Bruce Campbell cameos in previous sam raimi films.

In dark man he was just the last disguise dark man wore before the credits rolled. In Spiderman 1 he was a random ring announcer for an amateur wrestling match. In Spiderman 2 he was an usher for mjs play. In Spiderman 3 he was a French waiter. It's always been just a random guy who at best makes jokes real quick.

Closest we got to something significant was the Spiderman 4 cameo, where he would've played mysterio. But that scene was never filmed and for a movie that never happened, he wasn't even playing the main villain and was treated as just another criminal Spiderman took out off screen, and any insistence of greater significance like this being the same as the other cameos is purely a fan theory.

This is very much a case of standards being placed too high.

@Origame - His cameo is pretty much a reference to Evil Dead 2, when his hand is possessed and he starts beating himself up.

@Origame - Its because they removed deadpools cameo for it

@TheCoonII - 1) where are you getting that?

2) I've been hearing more of people complaining he wasn't a Dr strange variant.

@Origame - People expected to see Deadpool (...)

@TheHumanSpider2 - I mean, that really has nothing to do with the Campbell cameo. Sam raimi was obviously going to bring him in, and considering the levels of cameos, I really don't see them ditching Deadpool for Campbell. At best, Deadpool was never gonna be in the movie, which sucks but isn't because of Campbell.

@Origame - Obviously, I'm a lot more happy with Bruce than with Deadpool, but a lot of fans were expecting Deadpool, Tom Cruise, Nick Cage, Tobey Maguire, Eric Bana, Ioan Gruffudd, and Hugh Jackman to be in this movie, and when the post-credits scene is just Bruce Campbell fooling around...they felt dissapointed.
As you said, Deadpool was never going to be in this movie, I think the only cameo they added in reshoots was the mid-credits scene, which looks and feels rushed.

@TheHumanSpider2 - but again, this is the first I'm hearing people having a problem with specifically the Campbell cameo.
TheHumanSpider2

@Origame - The cameo is dumb (as most Bruce Campbell cameos are), and again, fans had INSANE expectations for the post-credits scene.

My theater cracked up at the post credit and clapped when he first appeared.

I read that Bruce was going to have a cameo on Drag Me To Hell but couldn't because of scheduling. I think that he was going to show up when the protagonist was selling her things.

@FinnishDude - Is he not in all of them? A Simple Plan maybe?
