In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Scarlet Witch invaded Earth-838 and made short work of The Illuminati. Mister Fantastic was shredded before having his head popped, Professor X's neck was snapped, Captain Marvel was crushed to death, and Captain Carter ended up being sliced in half by her own shield.
As for Black Bolt, Wanda Maximoff removed his mouth, resulting in the hero's powerful voice blowing his own head up from the inside (we're guessing he hoped to blast free of her spell).
Talking to Empire Magazine (via The Direct), writer Michael Waldron shed some light on how this shocking and brutal moment came to be. "I was at a point in the script where I was like, ’Shit, I don’t know what to do," he recalls. "We wanted the first death to feel really horrific."
"We were sitting on Zoom discussing how we kill Black Bolt, and somebody said his power is shooting ultra-powerful energy from his mouth. And I swear to God, without missing a beat, Sam goes, 'What mouth?' And Sam just painted the scene for us... you just cut to him, Wanda’s just ripped his mouth closed, and he screams, and his head explodes.' That’s master of horror Sam Raimi."
It was a memorable moment, that's for sure. However, many fans have expressed disappointment with the scene due to how little screen-time characters like Black Bolt and Mister Fantastic received in the sequel. While we know the latter will return (likely with a new actor), there's been no indication Marvel Studios has any real plans for the Inhumans.
That was confirmed when Ms. Marvel was revealed as a mutant, though we suppose it's always possible that they will somehow be connected to the Inhumans down the line.
Either way, it definitely makes sense for Raimi to be the one responsible for coming up with Black Bolt's gruesome death in the Doctor Strange sequel.
