ETERNALS Director Chloé Zhao On The Movie's Mixed Reception: "I Completely Understand"

Eternals director Chloé Zhao has finally weighed in on the (mostly) negative critical reaction to her film, admitting that she saw the decidedly mixed response coming upon the movie's release.

For the most part, Marvel Studios has maintained a consistent level of quality over the years, but some movies are obviously more highly regarded than others. Despite this, no MCU entry had dipped to "Rotten" status on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes... until last year's Eternals.

At 47%, the divisive superhero adventure is the first MCU film to earn that dreaded green splat, officially making it the lowest-ranked movie in the franchise.

Director Chloé Zhao has previously addressed the movie's mixed/negative reception (in a roundabout way, at least), but has now elaborated on her feelings during an in-depth interview with Empire. The Nomadland helmer says she was aware of the mixed reviews upon release, but wasn't particularly phased.

“Eternals was planned to be released soon after Endgame, and not at a time when everyone is having an existential crisis. The film itself is about existential crisis, both for humanity and God. So I think we definitely felt it was coming.”

The filmmaker went on to suggest that Eternals may have taken people out of their comfort zone a little when it comes to what they expect from a typical Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. "That’s the order of the logic of their world that’s being disturbed. So I appreciate their passion, to try to make sense of it.”

“The truth is that nobody is one layer," Zhao continues. "In this case, we truly stepped out of the box that I think the world put us in, and met in the middle because of our shared interests. And by truly doing that, it made a lot of people uncomfortable on both sides. But there are also people who are more comfortable with the order of their world [being] disturbed. And then they look at our love-child and go, “Oh! This touches different sides of me!’ I like that."

"So I completely understand the divisiveness coming from critics and the fans. Because when you take this to extremes that are seen as opposition – the world I come from and the world of Marvel, that has been divided in a way that’s so unfair and unfortunate – and to merge the way we did, I actually see the reaction as a testament to how much we had merged with each other; how uncomfortable that might make people feel.”

I wonder if Eternals will get a sequel or if they’ll make shows from the characters. I didn’t hate the movie but wasn’t a huge fan besides the visuals.

@thelastson18 - I think they will make Eternals 2 span across movies or Avengers 4.

@SonOfAGif - Eternals 2 isn't going to happen.

@thelastson18 - i don't think they had plans for a sequel but i think they definitely have plans for the characters in the larger MCU.

She did a better Justice League that WB and that's a fact. She was able to give each character in the ensemble their own personality and own power set and successfully made their fights feel authentic and not restricted because of movements/characters. The Eternals battling Icarus was exactly what The Justice League battling Superman should have been. She showed us how a Speedster should look during active combat and not slowed down to make it easier for the filmmaker.

@rebellion - Agree to disagree. But watch the league versus Superman and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. It was a shoving battle and even Wonder Woman was taken out as fast as possible to just make him toss Batman around.

@SonOfAGif - for sure better than either cut of justice league….

Not that its saying much

@dracula - I'm not talking so much about the movie entirely. I'm talking about the characters and the battles. She was able to prove it can be done and did it on her first try on a big budget movie. WB is just in denial that their heroes should be that...heroes.

I’m not sure she did, lol. Besides the fact that the movies aren’t remotely all that similar outside of a couple power sets.

Did we watch the same Eternals movie? 😅

@regularmovieguy - The Eternals spent centuries battling their ideology and questioning the Celestial's plans. And they stopped two of their own from allowing the Emergence from happening. That's what made them feel authentic. Justice League was a complete departure from what Batman v. Superman established. They retconned Batman's philosophy and made Wonder Woman a henchman rather than her own thing. Their power sets during filming were written to not be shown in all their glory in exchange for making Batman "keep up". Which if you are familiar with the animated movies and comics, Batman has no issue keeping up.

“ The Eternals spent centuries battling their ideology and questioning the Celestial's plans.”

Chillin out for centuries questioning their purpose while slavery, genocide, all sorts of atrocities occur doesn’t make them heroic. One of the Eternals flat out nopes out at the end of the movie, which I liked and thought was a nice change of pace, but how you could watch the movie and think these guys are authentic heroes, I just dunno.

Gemma Chan and Richard Madden had no chemistry together and made it hard to get even a little invested in them.

Makarri and Druig were great. They felt like they both had shadier sides to them that actually made them feel three dimensional.

@SonOfAGif - I mean, only if you're counting the theatrical cut.

@SonOfAGif - Chloe Zhao managed to blend together the best aspects of Snyder's DC work with the best aspects of the MCU.
I would be 100% onboard with Chloe Zhao helming a Justice League follow-up.

it seemed to me that the story she tried to tell was ill suited to the material she chose to tell it through. contemplations on god, existential crisis and humanity fits Silver Surfer far better, imo. i don't think i'd want her for a Surfer flick tho.

frankly, i just wanted to hear more about the Marvel cosmic entities, Eternals be damned...

Seriously doubt it would have made that much of a difference outside of maybe some people liking it more because of Endgame hype

Movies with similar styles have come out and been better received

She's not wrong. I do wonder how it would have went down if it came out before Covid.. the movie is quite boring mainly due to the villain I think, it painted broad stroke but just didn't stick its landing for me. Not the worst MCU entry IMO, but definilty not the best.

The movie was boring until the murder mystery unraveled

@TheWalkingCuban - Kro was a cool concept but executed poorly. Him being designed to be an Apex killer and then absorbing an Eternal and gaining their memories opening his mind to the truth had some real potential for a sequel. But they killed him quick. Not to mention his design was typical CGI fodder.
