ETERNALS VFX Supervisor Reveals Early, Vastly Different Plans For Arishem In Willy Wonka-Like Sequence

Eternals VFX Supervisor Jelmer Boskma has revealed that there were once plans to shrink Arishem down for a sequence that would have been similar to Willy Wonka walking through the World Forge.

No matter how you feel about Eternals (it certainly divided opinions), there's no denying that it was one of the most visually impressive Marvel Studios movies to date. The Celestials, in particular, were truly awe-inspiring, with Arishem cutting an imposing figure as he towered over the likes of Ajak and Sersi, and even Earth itself.

However, during a recent interview with befores & afters, Scanline VFX Supervisor Jelmer Boskma revealed that there were once early plans to portray Arishem in a completely different light.

"There was a version where Arishem shrunk himself down and essentially was like Willy Wonka walking through the World Forge," she revealed. "That got lost, but the wall of memories and all of that stuck. Even though it was something that was conceived much later. The entirety of the World Forge was photographed during a separate pickup shoot, long after principal."

Boskma also talked about creating the World Forge in Eternals and revealed that director Chloé Zhao had a very specific source of inspiration for the visuals in this movie.

"[Chloe] was very adamant about, ‘We want to instil the spirit of Jack Kirby into this. Look at the comics, and look at the way he draws things, which is this visual language of hard graphic shapes mixed with alien forms.’ You know, it’s not messy, but it’s not sleek either. There’s a lot of texture and grit to the way he designs, and of course, he has incredible bold color choices."

Arguably one of the most exciting and intriguing aspects of Eternals was learning more about the Celestials and the role they've played in the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The sequel is likely to continue to expand on that, deepening the mythology of this shared world in the process.

It was good thing that they didn't go with that idea. Keeping him gigantic helped to drive home his God-like nature.

I will be surprised if this movie get a sequel. I really do want to see the stuff at the end get resolved. But you put that group of people next to the X-Men or the avengers and I’m sorry but they just look super generic. I say this is somebody that likes the money! But I did not expect to because I thought they were boring in the comics and then the critics didn’t like it. I was pleasantly surprised at this piece of crap

@TheWalkingCuban - It's hard to tell. It passed 400 million worldwide, so it beat out Black Widow and is close to Shang Chi which is definitely getting a sequel. The film was also the 6th highest domestic release in 2021, and the 10th highest worldwide. User reviews on RT sat around 78-80%, so a majority of people did like enough to say they did. It just depends on how much they care about the critical reception.

But it also seems like they always considered a one and done possibility. That they just want the surviving characters in the toy box so they can use them in other films. You can definitely see the likes of Sersi and Thena becoming Avengers, and Phastos replacing Tony as the Tech guy creating armour and tech.

@TheWalkingCuban -
I don't think it'll get a direct sequel.

Galactus will replace Arishem as the threat to Earth, probably killing Arishem in the process, and be dealt with in one of the Fantastic Four films.

Some of the Eternals will return, split into seperate films such as Blade, Guardians Of The Galaxy 4, Thor 5 or Avengers: Secret Wars. Kingo will probably be revealed as a Skrull and appear in Captain Marvel 2, perhaps eventually becoming the Super Skrull.

Meanwhile Shang Chi will get a partial sequel where he becomes less of a focus to be replaced by the female supporting cast and probably Iron Fist.

@TanukiTrooper - dang it Phastos ain’t no Tony or no iron man, that charisma is unique, and he sho ain’t got no cool suit. But anyway, Wow those things are true unfortunately it still made the least domestically when compared to the incredible hulk’s adjusted for inflation total. That’s important seeing as a movie like world of warfare (did I get that right?) Can make a ton somewhere like China and still not get a sequel. I think in terms of being phase 1 of saga 2, It’s not a bad start. However, it seems that the negativity is louder than the positivity if that makes sense, like not many people are saying the parts that you pointed out just now. I don’t think that’s fair but it is what it is

@Scarilian - Do you mean what already happened in Shang Chi part one? And I doubt we’ll ever see IF unless SC done the suit. The Eternals stuff you said doesn’t make sense, like they will just be added into the universe instead of getting a sequel

“[Chloe] was very adamant about, ‘We want to instil the spirit of Jack Kirby into this.

I think it was very obvious from the film that neither Marvel nor Chloe Zhao respects Kirby or his works at all.

@WaffeX - Yeah but the way the movie is color-graded or such (to make it fit into the MCU aesthetic), it makes it all look more plastic like than it should be (kinda like the Aladdin remake).

I’m not sure they understood what “instilling the spirit of Kirby” meant.
