The Marvel Cinematic Universe is, without a doubt, one of the most successful film franchises of all time, but despite its extreme popularity, Marvel Studios has still received some flak for its lack of representation.

However, over the past fear years, we’ve seen the superhero universe make some significant improvements in this area, thanks to the release of films like Black Panther and Captain Marvel. And with projects like Shang-Chi and Ms. Marvel in the works, it looks like the MCU will continue to grow more and more diverse.

In fact, as we’ve heard ever since the film entered development, The Eternal’s is set to feature Marvel Studios’ first openly gay superhero. And while we still don’t know the identity of the character, Kevin Feige has shared some new details on the hero.

"He's married,” Feige told Good Morning America during the recent D23 Expo. “He's got a family. And that is just part of who he is."

These comments don’t identify any specific member of The Eternals, but it does confirm previous reports that the character is male. Nonetheless, Feige’s statement makes it clear that the hero’s sexuality will be acknowledged on screen, something the studio was criticized for not doing with Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok.

Directed by Chloé Zhao, The Eternals stars Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff , Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Angelina Jolie, Barry Keoghan, Gemma Chan and Kit Harington.

Do you think Disney will show an onscreen man-kiss? Or will they just allude to it to avoid Christian outcry?

As long as it feels genuine and isn't one of those forced pandering scenes I am 100% with it. I want these diverse characters to feel genuine in their worlds and not awkwardly forced just to fit a current real world agenda.

Just do it and don’t make it a statement that’s the best way to normalize and be inclusive just have the thing be the thing and people will see it for what it is which is normal

I have a feeling I am going to get told I am wrong in this, but why was it an issue Valkyrie's orientation was not alluded to in Ragnarok? As far as I recall there were no romantic storylines in that film, so why would any character's orientation be relevant to it to begin with.

I have no concern with any person's orientation. And I think this is the point we want our society to get to right? So if that is the goal, why are we pushing so much for some relationships to be front and centre, or even outwardly obvious, especially when there is no narrative reason for it? (I use ragnarok as my example here, not Eternals, as I have seen the former)

@AFriendFromWork - I agree with you, but I think the issue was that the scene depicting Valkyrie's sexuality was cut from the finished film. I believe it was a scene of another girl walking out of her room, something like that.

I know nothing about these characters,so as long as they are good characters and they focus on telling a good story and not on sending some message, do whatever they want and ill watch

@Ha1frican I'd say the way Feige explained made it seem normal enough so well see.

Why do we even need to talk about it? Just have him kiss his husband, or hold hands, or wtfever. Addressing it she was of time seems like a “Hey just so everyone knows there’s a gay character coming, and we’re super open and inclusive!!!!! Yay us!!!”.

@USAgent716 - You do realize Feige was asked a question and he answered right? It's not like he is running in the streets screaming "Eternals will have a gay hero!!!!!"

@Jeight8 - They already let it be known.
