FEATURE: Ror's Best & Worst Of 2012 Part 1

We'll start with the best. Many of my favorite movies of 2012 weren't comic book movies or covered here on CBM, but a few were, so what follows are my top 5. Click on to see if you agree/disagree, and sound off in the usual place..

5) THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

Disappointing? maybe a little - if you were expecting another Fellowship Of The Ring, but the first part of Peter Jackson's new Middle Earth trilogy was always going to be a different beast from a narrative and tonal standpoint. It's a simpler, lighter story yes, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. The humor works well, and all of the performances are spot on. If you're not a fan, this won't make you one, but a few problems aside The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - much like its diminutive hero - comes shining through in the end.

4) CHRONICLE

Two of the biggest money-spinners in Hollywood today are the found footage and Superhero movies, so I guess it was only a matter of time before someone saw the sense in combining the two and making a packet. Luckily for us, that someone was Josh Trank, for while it might have been easy to be cynical, I think Chronicle turned out top be a Hell of a lot better than anyone thought it would be. I had a few minor quibbles with the last act, but overall the movie juggles a lot of elements brilliantly, and manages to be smart, funny, exciting and tragic without ever overdoing it or pandering to our emotions. I can't wait to see what Trank has in store for us next.

3) LOOPER

Rian Johnson's masterful third film easily earns a place in the top five. It may have been slightly overpraised by some critics, who labelled it as almost the second coming of sci-fi. It isn't - but it is is a brilliantly acted, directed, and exciting movie with a great - and mercifully, no sequel bait - ending. Looper may not be a "game changer", but not everything needs to be. It's still one of the best sci-fi movies we have had in a very long time.

2) THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Okay, so my top 2 won't come as a surprise to most but I wan't excluding them or changing the order just because it was predictable - both deserve the tops spots and that's that. What else can I say about Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie that hasn't already been said in two separate (theatrical release and Blu-ray) reviews. The movie most definitely has its critics - some fair, some not - and while I do have some issues with the movie myself, none are big enough to tarnish what I believe to be a flawed masterpiece. Nolan was under a lot of pressure to deliver after the critical and commercial juggernaut that was The Dark Knight, and he has succeeded. Is it better? I really don't know, but the point is it is a worthy follow up, and a more than satisfying ending to the trilogy. I will echo a few other reviews by saying whoever reboots Batman - whether they deliver a more faithful interpretation or not - is going to have their work cut out.

1) THE AVENGERS

I struggled with the order to put these final 2 in, as I honestly don't prefer one over the other. Yes they are both comic book films, but as far as I'm concerned it's like comparing Star Wars and Fight Club - I love them both but for very different reasons. But in the end Marvel's superhero team-up flick takes the top spot for sheer entertainment value and the spectacle of not just seeing all of these characters on screen together, but seeing them brought together so damn brilliantly by a man who clearly knows and loves his comic books. Did it live up to expectations? Well considering most fans were expecting a frackin religious experience I'm not really sure anything ever could, but it genuinely comes pretty close.

Honorable mentions: Skyfall, The Hunger Games, DREDD, Cabin In The Woods. Tune in tomorrow for my 5 worst.

Solid list. I would have a very similar list but TDKR would be a little lower. Just didn't enjoy it enough

I'd have to have another good think about it but Chronicle might not make the cut in favor of The Raid, and maybe The Hobbit in favor of something else..maybe Argo!

I haven't seen the Hobbit yet, but The Fellowship Of The Ring is what I did not want to see. That was the weakest of the trilogy imo

Good list! No Django? Or is it not overseas until the new year?

I felt the criticism of The Hobbit was too harsh. I'm not one to make lists but I know TDKR, Skyfall, and The Avengers were probably my favorite three. I still haven't seen Argo and Looper yet.

Nice list :) I agree with the whole ". . . whoever reboots Batman . . . is going to have their work cut out." I definitely want some Bat Spanking in the next one :P

And kudos to Joss Whedon for successfully bringing together the first superhero team up and for playing a huge role (10%) in re-energizing the movie industry.

youradick@ What was bad about Hunger Games? I think it's a really significant generational landmark. Those stupid [frick]ing kids who grew up loving Harry Potter films and those insanely bad Twilight flicks are watchin Hunger Games. It shows that this generation is actually aware of all the stupid and potentially dangerous shit around them, in the world, today. It's The Running Man meets Nineteen Eighty-Four, only with a more contemporary relevance. And this is one of those bloody YA books? I think that's really good. Doesn't it just reaffirm your faith in ... well, in young adults?

I tried to watch Chronicle twice and fell asleep both times, so that one wouldn't make my list. Looper and TDKR would not make my list. Life of Pi, Skyfall, Django Unchained would replace those...off the top of my head anyway.

NO Raid-Redemption????
Maximus101
Maximus101 - 12/30/2012, 2:56 PM
@grabass technically the raid was released in 2011 even though it was not released in north America and the uk until 2012. The raid was nominated and won during the 2011 Grammys if memory serves me right.
graveyardtramp
graveyardtramp - 12/30/2012, 3:11 PM
Prometheus was easily the biggest let-down of the year for me...so much promise for such a lousy non-event of a pay-off.

Argo and God Bless America were my two personal faves of the year, but CBM wise TDKR was the clear highlight, followed by Dredd and then The Avengers. Amazing Spider-Man had decent lead cast but a very ho-hum plot and a terrible CGI lizard.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/30/2012, 3:12 PM
The Raid isn't CBM related. ..it makes my all inclusive top 5 easily though.

Ranger14
Ranger14 - 12/30/2012, 3:36 PM
I don't see The Raid being any less CBM related than Looper. Neither are actual comic book movies.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/30/2012, 4:06 PM
I'm not going into the criteria again, you know them .Bottom line is we covered Looper on CBM, we didn't cover The Raid.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 12/30/2012, 4:32 PM
I guess you should have qualified CBM.com related as opposed to CBM related in your prior post. The criteria is pretty grey here, considering The Expendables got covered here and that is no different kind of film than The Raid. *shrugs shoulders*.

MarkCassidy - 12/30/2012, 5:20 PM
It does NOW yes, but it didn't at the time it was released or for quite a while after. Since we never covered it at the time because of this, I wasn't about to put it in a best of list for this site.

Here are my top 5 of the year:

1. Avengers
2. Amazing Spider-Man
3. Looper
4. Cabin in the Woods (that was 2012, right?)
5. Expendables 2

Honorable mention goes to Skyfall.

Most disappointing:

1. Prometheus
2. Ghost Rider 2
3. Dark Knight Rises
4. Episode 1 in 3D. It's bad enough this was released even once. Twice... what a garbage movie.
5. Sinister
