People are always arguing about who will come out on top at the box office next year between The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. Most think The Dark Knight Rises will come out on top, which is very likely. But, this inspired me to think of a few reasons why The Avengers could come out on top.

NOTE: I'M NOT BIASED TOWARDS MARVEL OR DC, THIS IS JUST FOR SPECULATION/DISCUSSION PURPOSES.

1) It will bring fans of each series together. I'm sure there are some people who love Iron Man, but didn't go to see Thor, and visa versa, so bringing the fans together will result in a very large fan base.

2) They have a Hulk. Haha really though, The Hulk is up there with Batman and Spiderman as one of the more popular superheroes, and maybe his past two films didn't do outstanding as far as grossing. But, if they advertise this right and show the Hulk alongside with all these other heroes, I feel they could gain a few more millions.

3) This is the first Marvel film produced by Disney, and Disney knows how to market their movies. This may be the biggest reason of them all. Disney will start marketing the hell out of this movie, because they're freakin' Disney.

4) Broader age range for the audience. Let's be honest, and I'm not calling The Avengers childish, but this movie will be much more appealing to the younger audiences than the dark and gritty TDKR. I feel that there are going to be a lot more kids running to see The Avengers than TDKR.

5) Lack of the Joker in TDKR. First off, let me say that I am definitely not a DC hater, I love the Nolan Batman series. It's just that this is the conclusion to the series, and the lack of the Joker is just a really big turn off, at least for me. I feel there has got to be a lot of others who feel the same way. I'm still very excited for the TDKR regardless, just not as excited as I would be if Heath Ledger as The Joker were present.

Very valid points. This should appeal to a younger audience. You did however not mention that these kids should instantly relate this movie to "The Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes" animated series. That will have some effect on the Box Office numbers as well I think.

You know what @Liveman? You should move this to Editorials dude.

Solid reasons, but my gut is telling me the TDKR will win at the box office due to greater anticipation in general audiences. It's debatable which of the two is more anticipated among fanboys, but the masses have been waiting for the follow-up to TDK for almost as long as the fans were first starting to realize the Avengers was really going to happen. I'm pretty sure if you go out and ask random people if they know what the Avengers movie is, at this point, you'll still find a lot of people who don't.
liveman789
liveman789 - 10/4/2011, 8:16 AM
@BIGBMH True, but when Disney decides to start advertising the film, recognition of what The Avengers is and the film itself will probably go up a lot. And like I said and we all know, Disney is all about marketing.
MoonDoggyX
MoonDoggyX - 10/4/2011, 8:24 AM
It could go either way as far as which one will make more. But one thing is for sure, Neither one is going to make the kind of money "The Dark Knight" did. If i had to put money, though, I would have to say Batman's gonna take it because that series has sold more tickets per movie than the films leading up to the Avengers which means more public interest... Not to say that the Avengers doesn't have a hell of a fighting chance. With Joss Wheadon at the helm, there's gonna be some kick-ass footage for the trailers. Then there's Disney's Marketing department behind them, arguably the best in the biz. And the Avengers will have tons more merchandising than Batman because like the article mentioned it is for a younger audience...

valid points,i believe the avengers will topple the dark knight rises.

the avengers $750,000,000 maybe more, iron man & iron man 2 are the two highest grossing marvel studio's films & the avengers features iron man, also disney have four of the ten highest grossing films of all time.

the dark knight rises $750,000,000,if its lucky no joker no dollar.the two highest grossing batman films both feature the joker, bane & catwoman aren't strong enough to carry a film.

nolanites attack in 3....2.....1.

MoonDoggyX - 10/4/2011, 9:52 AM
@Marvel72 - HOW DARE YOU SAY BATMAN CAN'T WIN AT SOMETHING?!?!?!? NOLAN IS A CINEMATIC GENIUS!!!! lol. You know, for the Avengers to do that kind of money, it will have to draw in people that weren't interested in seeing any of the 5 preceding films. It'll be an uphill battle considering the general audience really only showed up in mass for Iron Man 1 and 2. 1/4 of the of the main stars...

Irons
Irons - 10/4/2011, 9:58 AM
Interesting points Liveman. But I think rather than providing the juice to beat The Dark Knight Rises, these will simply add to box office estimates based off of previous movies in the Marvel Universe.

Marketing is a major factor, you're right, and Disney will no doubt do a great job marketing The Avengers. But The Dark Knight and, directly related or not, Inception are huge in pop culture. People were talking about them long before and long after release for a very long time. In the world of comic book fans, The Avengers is probably the most anticipated movie of next summer. But in the world of the massive, general movie-going audiences, TDKR takes the cake by far. So I don't think Warner Bros needs to go overboard to market the movie well. Based on their campaign for TDK, they'll probably do it anyway.

it'll be intresting to see what happens,i don't think $750,000,000 is to big a feat considering what we're gonna get,i would love it to do a billion but i think $750,000,000 is more achievable.

Nothing could save Thor and Captain America from the mediocre movie graveyard, they weren't even on the same level of success as the Ironman franchise. this is not a great lead in for The Avengers, either the audience are getting tired of these repetitive Marvel films or they just don't care about Marvel B-list superheroes.

THOR Domestic: $181,030,624

Captian America Domestic: $175,330,418

Ironman Franchise
IR-1 Domestic: $318,412,101
IR-2 Domestic: $312,433,331

They don't care about dc's A list either (green lantern). Anyway Looking forward to both Avengers and TDKR.

domestic takings is nothing, the worldwide takings are what matters.

also you class captain america, thor, iron man,the hulk as b-list superheroes what do you class as a list.

C'mon... Inception made $825 million, the second-highest for a nonsequel scifi..
If INCEPTION made 825 million, I'm sure that the sequel to a $1billion-dollar making 8 oscar nominated film will earn AT LEAST that much
MoonDoggyX
MoonDoggyX - 10/4/2011, 1:25 PM
As far as recognizability to the general public goes, A-List would consist of Superman, Batman and Spiderman... as in my grandmother could literally tell me who they are.

A-Minus-lister = Hulk and Iron Man due to the success of the recent films... Grams don't know him, but my mom and sister does...

B-Listsers would be Wonder Woman, Captain America, The Flash, Aquaman, Wolverine... If someone dressed as them for Halloween, most people would get it...

B-Minus- Lister = Thor... moved up from the C-list after his movie, but still not as known at the b-listers

C-listers are Green Lantern, Blade, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Punisher, X-Men... People who grew up on the cartoons or seen the movies would recognize them instantly, but no one who's never benn exposed would have a clue who they are...

I'm not what you'd call a "Nolan-ite" by any means, but the chances of Avengers beating TDKR are about as slim as Gusto not needing a Viagra pill today. The fan-base for Nolan's Bat-films is massive. Add to that the anticipation of the final film in the series, as well as the sheer star-power for the film and you have a blockbuster in your hands. If you look at the box office numbers for Thor and Captain America, they made money, yes, but no near the amount of the previous Batman films and it is safe to say that the majority of that money came from comic book fans, not the general public.

I hope and want Avengers to do well, and I think it will, but I don't think it will reach the levels of TDKR. Your points are strong though, I will give you that.
Supes17
Supes17 - 10/4/2011, 2:01 PM
yeah the story looks quite simple. Loki flips out, aliens tear shit up. The avengers assemble and save the day. The end

BUT..I'm sure it will be badass:)

Great article. You made some very valid points, but i respectfully disagree with your statement that Avengers could be TDKR at the B.O.

I mean, TDKR is the sequel to the highest grossing CBM of all time, TDK & its Nolan's finale in his unforgettable Batman trilogy, so those two things alone will drive people to the cinema. I think TDKR will come out on top, but i think Avengers has ALL the potential to become the highest grossing Marvel film(Marvel Studios or Marvel Entertainment).
liveman789
liveman789 - 10/4/2011, 2:49 PM
@Antonio

Yes, very true. I know how TDKR has the more likely chance of being out on top, I'm just saying the Avengers definitely has a fighting chance. Both films have a lot to go against each other.

But yeah, I sure it'll definitely being the highest grossing Marvel film to date, without a doubt.

I don't know about this because the Dark Knight is the follow up to what many call the greatest comic book film of all time. The Avengers will probably be very good though but all the movies leading up to it excluding Iron Man haven't done spectacularly in the box office they did alright but nothing special. I think that the Avengers will be the action movie of the summer and The Dark Knight Rises will be the better story.

I really don't care if TA beats out TDKR at the box office in 2012, as long as TDKR is better received by the critics and by the fan base than TA I will be happy.

A better story, script, acting, screenplay, and overall better made movie is more important to me than the box offices numbers. Both will make a profit at the end, so what only really matters is which film is a critical success. imo

I hope TDKR comes out on top in that department. :)
