How I would handle DC/CW TV universe.

How I would handle DC/CW TV universe.

If DC keeps their TV(just the CW shows) and cinematic universes separate, which I hope they do, there are some things I would like to see them do with their TV universe. In this article I will share those ideas...

Unlike a lot of members of this site, I do not want to see DC's TV and cinematic universes merge into one. One reason being that I'm just about positive that they did not plan ahead on this, meaning it will most likely leave massive plot holes in the combined universe. The second reason is that with two separate universes, there would be less restrictions far as what they can do and who they can use. With that being said, I have some ideas on what I'd like them to do with their CW shows.

A Teen Titans show with Robin/Tim Drake(if rumors and speculations are right Dick Grayson is already Nightwing and Jason Todd is already Red Hood and I think a current Robin should lead the team), Beastboy, Cyborg, Raven, and bring in Starfire later in the show. Cyborg will be introduced in the Flash show; he was meeting his dad, while he was working on the particle accelerator and got stuck in room when it exploded. His father keeps saves him by giving him mechanical body parts. Beastboy's origin will also be tied to the particle accelerator; his mother brings Garfield back from Africa, after getting a rare disease. While being treated he's exposed to radiation coming from the explosion, which rewrites his DNA, making him Beastboy. Raven's origin will be the same, but she will be underground, no one knows about her and her powers until the pilot episode. Reason for Starfire coming in later within the season is to keep the introduction to super powered beings in the universe being all after the particle accelerator incident(with the exception of Slade, Roy, and Cyrus Gold). In the first season Starfire will leave the Teen Titans at the same time Roy leaves Team Arrow in the corresponding season(I'll go into why later, if you haven't already figured it out). In later seasons, more heroes can be introduced.

After Teen Titans first season, I would create a Red Hood and the Outlaws show. With both Roy and Starfire leaving their teams, they join up with Jason Todd/Red Hood to help him go after The Untitle.

At some point in the Flash series, I would give Wally West his powers, making him Kid Flash. Barry mentors him, but later in the show realizes he'd be better off with the Titans.

Now the big one, a Justice league show, with Nightwing, Green Arrow, Black Canary The Flash, and Green Lantern. We know for sure we have Green Arrow, Black Canary, and The Flash; Nightwing is rumored to appear in Arrow, and Green Lantern is rumored for The Flash.

That's all I've got so far, but what do you think? Would you like to see this done? let me know below.

You're right about merging the tv and the cinematic universe opening some restrictions but it also allows for big possibilities. A character like Flash could be part of a Justice League side by side with the trinity and develop ideas from it. The merger could help the character development and the stories. There were rumors of CW doing a Young Justice show when all the other ones were announced. There hasn't been talk of it ever since but it could still be true.

Costumes, powers and other things are also better because of this. If in Justice League they used Barry Allen from the Flash show then they would make him a better costume that could then be used in the show afterwards. More extraordinary concepts like the magical side could be given there due respect by introducing them in Justice League Dark and then exploring them in a more grounded way in the shows. Superman and Green Lantern are caracters that could never interact well with Flash in something like an alien invasion on TV but if they merged the universes they could connect the characters in the movies and then continue the plot on Tv through just Flash improving the character because of the things that he went through.

This argument of why they shouldn't merge the universe is BS.

The comics have a shared universe (And no one bats an eye) and no one complains about a comic restricting what another can do, or plot holes solely because they're shared.

The TV and movie universes are shared (everyone loses their minds), and everyone complains or makes excuses as to why it shouldn't.
I personally dont buy this argument, and for one main reason.

Most of the TV shows heroes/villains are B-list or C-list characters.

Are you going to tell me that they can get a better actor than Stephen Amell to play someone like Green Arrow in a movie where his role is small? an actor who probably isn't familiar with the character as opposed to Stephen Amell who's now played him for like 40 episodes, and an actor who wont command significant pay?

I think when most of us say shared universe, we mean stuff like seeing the "You are not alone" sign popping up on the Arrow cave's TV.

and then Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) appearing for a couple of minutes with bruce wayne and lex at a charity to help rebuild metropolis, etc.

We dont mean like a 30-40 minute role in the movie.

@godslayer comics are one medium so of course no one complains about continuity between the separate comic series.

What you and seemingly everyone else can't seem to see if you merge the TV and cinematic universe they would have to play by each others rules meaning, for example, cinematic Green Arrow would have to be just as grounded as he is in the show. If you keep them seperate you can a cinematic version of arrow that's not grounded and can be play by an actor more fit for the cinematic version of Green Arrow, while still having Amell's television version. So that means that any character both universes decides to use we get to see different versions allowing us to enjoy characters in different forms.

Another thing is deaths. If a character in a movie dies he/she can't be used in the TV universe. This is a real big problem because movies loves to kill villians off while TV shows tries to hold on to them to use again later, which will limit who can be used in both the films and TV.

Anyway this article isn't about merging or not merging the universes I just had to make my position on the debate clear to write my article.

As cool as it would be to see a coherent DC universe across t.v. and movies, I dont think its necessary as neither comic company has one single universe to which all characters adhere.
Its better to wish for all the movies and shows to be as good as they can be, stand alone or tied together.

@Rex
I would consider TV and movies as live action, whether its shown on tv or in theaters, is different.

As for deaths being used on TV after they died in the movies, that depends on the time line.

and it goes back to my first point,
Most TV heroes or Villains, are B-list or C-list characters.
for example Even if you didn't kill Zod in MOS, there's no way you would get Michael Shannon to play Zod in a Flash Tv Show.
1) because he probably wont do TV
2) Flash most likely doesn't have a story where he fights Zod
3) Most Villains dont overlap between several characters, there's only a few characters that overlap between several heroes, and DeathStroke happens to be one of them (Arrow, Teen Titans, Batman, Etc)

So chances are, we wont be seeing a Zod, Doomsday, Darkseid type villains (which are A-list villains), in a TV show.

I understand the argument from both sides though, i just dont like when people say (with absolute certainty) that it shouldn't be done because of X, Y, and Z.

As for the Topic, I probably wouldn't be doing any Show that used excessive amounts of Super Powers that require use of CGI. and i do have a couple reasons for this.

CGI will force production budget to go up.
While Arrow has super powers (Super Strength), the way its set up in the show, it can easily be made believable via practical effects, such as exaggerating a kick by having the one being kicked, to be pushed back a little further, etc.

But when you go into characters like Beastboy which require CGI for transformations, and then maybe "stunt" animals for some scenes, it doesn't sound plausible for the TV.

This is the reason why a show like Arrow is possible, because the character can be done without an overly large production budget. thus much easier to manage.

Then theres characters like Cyborg, that require complex costumes, which can be difficult to do it right under a TV budget. Green Arrow's costume isn't that hard for a TV budget, and to some extent Death stroke's Costume isn't that hard either.

Same goes for Green Lantern. the Costume is probably the easy part (Screw the movie's costume, that one sucked major balls) but the CGI on the TV budget will probably be the harder part.

It could be done if its like a 1-2 episode special (i.e Season Finale) where they up the budget, but its not sustainable for a season, let alone several, without seeing profits plummeting.

@Godslayer I agree with you on the budget part, but with how well Arrow is doing now, and with DC willing to take the risk with The Flash I take it by the time any of my ideas could happen, budget will not be a problem. They'd be willing to raise the budget because they have faith that their shows will do well. I think DC knows this as well, because it's already been rumored that a Teen Titans/Young Justice show is being planned for the CW, most likely in the same continuity as Arrow, and they are bound to have some super powered beings in the show, like Beastboy, Raven, Starire, Kid Flash, etc.

Also I'm not necessarily saying the universes can't merge, but that I think they better off not due to my reasoning. Plus like I said earlier I would like to see both cinematic and TV versions of some characters, just to see how they are handled in both.

To be honest I do want to see the DC cinematic universe to branch out into television as well, but done right, not just taking something already there and trying to force it in. I would like to see them get shows on HBO, Showtimes, or Starz, where budget is an even less of a problem, and they can actually have a plan going into it.

@gliderman Except you don't have to merge the universes to expand. For example, if DC wants a Flash for their cinematic universe, they can create their own without forcing in Grant Gustin's version. Also if they merge the universe their stuck the decisions made by each universe, so the cinematic univers have plans to us Arrow, Flash, and Deathstroke in the future, but do not want the version of one of these particular characters, too bad, it is what it is. If DC wants to migrate some of their characters from it's cinematic universe to television, they should, but not by forcing in the CW's shows, but by creating new shows made specifically in the same continuity of their films.
